The first segment of this soundwalk corresponds to the chosen starting position at the sidewalk in front of the Hôtel La Pérouse. I was standing at the Quai Rauba Capeu (M6098 road), across the hotel. I held the microphone  hanging onto the large rocks that are slammed by the waves. The roughed profile of the rocks and depth of the water in that spot yield some rich extremes in frequencies.

“A Reading For Dark Times with cyberBanshee”, by Hannah Reardon-Smith.
 
cyberBanshee uses Ableton-expanded flute/s, in conjunction with a structure drawn from Tarot cards pulled at the start of the performance and the astrology of the moment, to improvise a sonic spell of reckoning with these dark times on stolen land. In so doing, she is co-creating a performance along with the entire ecology of the cards, the immediate environment, her instrument/s, her own history, and the moment in which we find ourselves—a sympoietic entanglement of forces and influences. Less an oracle for what is to come, the performance aims more at an honest engagement with the immediate moment and environment, drawing histories and futures, presences and absences, knowns and unknowns into the present space.

OBELISCOLYCHNY is a tone poem for orchestra about the mythical and occult happenings of an accursed lighthouse. The piece is heavy and slow like an archaic beast slowly corrupting those who dare to face it. Atop this lighthouse resides a twisted empyrean lantern shepherding men to their deaths. To frame this graphic scene, I used a variety of fun orchestration tricks and identifying melodic
material to help guide the listener through this tallsome tale. 

The Griffith Conservatorium Symphony performed the piece during the orchestral readings.

Obeliscolycnhy - An Historical Phantasy

Quartet for the Prince is a three-movement piece exploring the aural soundscape of the Middle East betwixt narrative to dance music. For a portable quartet, the work takes the listener on a nomadic journey through the dunes from campfires on the bedrock to the wandering markets and finally the quasi-march dance. This piece divulges in not only the rhythmic practices of Arabic music but also the tuning as the musicians must change their tunings to accommodate for the notes outside of the western tradition. Quartet for the Prince tells a story about community through various ensemble styles and collaboration at its core.

Quartet for the Prince

Quartet For The Prince (الرباعية للأمير)

“The Ship”, written by young composer Florence Lingane, is inspired by a sculpture of the same title by Eduard Bersudsky.  Bersudsky lived through the Soviet Union, and made many kinetic sculptures inspired by folklore, politics, and his personal experiences.  His amalgamation of woodworking with scrap metal resulted in traditionally crafted mechanical toys that didn’t sit flush with themselves, thus showcasing the beauty in the disjointed.  Florence emulated this mechanical effect in her composition with strings acting as the rhythmic clockwork parts, brass swelling like the sea the boat sails on, and woodwinds squawking high above the waves.  Two bells chime as the boat rocks back and forth.  “The Ship” transports you far across the sea to times of political turmoil and the people trying to make life better.

Florence is a young Australian composer who specialises in classical, jazz, electronic, and traditional. Having many years of experience in all fields, she strives to create new and interesting music.
