Music made for Ellen Marie's expo 'Metamorphosis', held from 1/3 - 10/3 in Perk, Belgium.

I had a great time composing this soundscape for Ellen Marie, a friend of mine. 

I went to meet her in Barcelona, where she has her studio. Sat there for two days, letting her paintings and sketches deliver their collective and individual messages to me. What came about was a thick soundscape, which I consequently molded and sculpted to become this stretched out dark, eerie, but sometimes soft and soothing blanket which would be used on the expo later on.

Establishing a collage of influence and musical intuition is no simple feat, it can take time for an artist to establish and forge an identity which is unique and representative of their own character. Adriaan De Roover is a Belgian experimental musician who has just released a new album called 'Leaves'. The album is a freeform piece of work which layers instrumentation and soundscapes in an abstract and yet enchanting manner. It's described as being a piece of work which balances both "peace and restlessness". 

Perhaps better known under the guise of Oaktree his music has previously been championed and supported by the likes of Bonobo, Mary Anne Hobbs and Lefto. His sound is diverse and draws upon elements of the fourth world, establishing comparisons with new age musicians and the likes of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. 

Adriaan describes his new album as follows: 

“‘Leaves’ was written between 2016 and 2018, mainly in a cabanage in the Ardennes, in solitude and around nature. Although there are some outward moments, I tried to make music that finds as much beauty in small gestures, in doubt and in honesty (above all). I hope you can get lost in it, just like I did, and maybe then, some moments of beauty might reveal themselves.”

We invited him to record a mix which showcases the diversity of his own musical personality, his take on sound and sculpture. He picks tracks by the likes of Bloc Party, Rosalia, Photek, Nicolas Jaar, Alice Coltrane and Anenon.

Adriaan De Roover: The 'Monday Is Okay' Mix

‘Stay/Leave’ is a collaborative double sided single between artists Ravvel and Poltrock. After connecting on tour with Belgian trip-hop band Hooverphonic, the two quickly decided to join forces and put their shared love of melancholy and minimalism to compositional use. 

Recorded in “one takers”, each song and video tells an honest and direct tale of holding on and letting go. The diptych feels like a ripped out page of a personal diary put to music, an intimate conversation between the warm piano playing of Poltrock and the fragile vocals of Ravvel. ‘Stay/Leave’ are two opposite concepts, in this case serving the same narrative and should be seen as an inseparable entity.

Nillies Nihilist first musing on contemporary stress levels seems very apt at this particular moment. An EP of documentary influenced collages of youtube-sourced samples, contemplating growing up in the digital age. Ranging from online profiling to voicing pre-adolescent deathwishes, 20 EP tries to look at the scope of young people's emotions growing up in our neo-liberal times.
