There are theories that Omega Centauri is the core of a dwarf galaxy that was absorbed by the Milky Way in the past. This is indicated in particular by its large size and other characteristics unusual for globular clusters.

One of the features of the Omega Centauri Cluster is that the stars in it have different ages and metallicities, while in most clusters they form almost simultaneously and have almost no difference in chemical composition. The cluster has stars between 10 and 12 billion years old and has not formed uniformly but in at least two bursts of star formation. This cluster is the first to feature stars from different populations.

In 2008, a paper was published which claimed that the cluster had a black hole of moderate mass at its centre. This was indicated by an increased concentration of stars towards the centre and high velocities in the centre, and the mass of the black hole was estimated to be 40000 solar masses.

However, later work in 2010 showed that there could not be a black hole of such mass in the cluster. The existence of a black hole has not been disproved in principle, but an upper limit of its possible mass has been set at 12000 solar masses
