Ring Ring Ring! The dawn of a fresh day brings a new label near. Squid Recordings inks its way into existence with a heavy foot on rave Americana.

Four tunes, club-risen in an oven safe pan, dive into new territories for the California born Taylor Freels. SR001 grounds itself in the wirings of synths past while still focusing on heavy, sample-flipping grooves. The inaugural 12” for the project is a taste test for what is to come.

Liquid Earth landed on our map when his Microsmosis Ep was released on TerraFirm back in 2019. It was spun at every opportunity, and we wern't alone. Played by many a favorite DJ of ours, it sounded particularly amazing on the hoppetosse dancefloor when Vera dropped it back in Feb 2020. Around that time too he remixed Triform - Vinaloop for our first Faciendo vinyl release, and hasnt stopped since. There's plenty of new music coming from Liquid Earth and here he shares a magical live DJ set brimming with energy from a recent gig in New Zealand :)

From its conception, I've strived to make TerraFirm embody the characteristics of the futurist's ideal ecosystem. Community, coherency, sustainability and the ability to self-renew have been the cornerstones of the label's A&R, aesthetics and narrative. In real and simple terms this meant assembling a group of connected, like-minded producers whose music re-envisioned the utopian future upon which Techno was built. This future transcends aesthetic fantasy, connecting our dystopian Earthly reality to a harmonious, interconnected and equitable future.

HOLOBIONT is the full and final realization of TerraFirm's mission and I can't imagine a better concept to bring this endeavor to a close. A holobiont (Latin: "the whole of life") is any collection of species that creates a complex ecosystem through symbiotic interactions. Holobionts exist on all scales of being, from the microscopic to the universal. Organelles combine to form the cellular holobiont; 30 trillion human cells and 38 trillion bacteria form the human holobiont; 9 million species, 11 biomes and an electromagnetic rock form the holobiont Earth and so on all the way up the cosmic scale.

This compilation is the coming together of a dozen artists for the common cause of raising money in the hopes of easing the suffering of our fellow humans in Gaza. The label was never meant to end this way but there couldn't be a more fitting finale.

With releases on Rush Hour, Velocity and his own Nylon Recordings, James ‘Nylon’ Thomas sees his Nylosphere project reborn, remastered and retouched (over two decades later) for the modern world.

The two widely varying title tracks, backed with equally contrasting mixes, are a microcosm of what late 90s, American-made dance music embodied. That is, a web of genre hopping maximalism, analog driven punchiness and a beautiful uncertainty to a post millennia world.

Dutch upstart Epsie pulls a rabbit, or maybe a Roland, from the hat with Rule of Thumb, a
debut EP that’s as wobbly and wide-eyed as a warehouse party at the early morning
hours. It’s a small marvel of mangled synth wizardry and chopped-to-hell drum patterns
that somehow stay locked tighter than your last three-day weekend. There’s a charming
messiness to it all.

“Fedde” kicks things off with a percussive punch to the frontal lobe, big-room bravado
laced with a subtle wink. “Electric” takes a left turn down acid alley, tripping over a
broken beat and landing in a puddle of molten 303 line. But nothing here feels tacked on
or stitched together post-hangover; it’s all curiously cohesive, like chapters in a fever
dream authored by a bedroom producer with a dusty sequencer and an interstellar
agenda.

Nostalgic without being derivative, danceable without chasing a trend, Rule of Thumb is
fit for all forms of dancing, and the roof tops that dare to hold it.

The singular brand of house music that Taylor Freels produces as Liquid Earth is uniquely transatlantic, infusing the rhythmic sensibilities of London and Berlin with the sun-soaked serenity of his native California. Part '80s sleaze, part '90s deepness, part '00s wiggle, Freels makes dance music cocktails that pop like a twist of lime hitting seltzer. Melodic, crisp, and always refreshing, each track by the California-native is singularly recognizable as he refashions vintage sounds for the clubs of tomorrow.

Under his most recent alias, Liquid Earth, Freels has been pushing, as Resident Advisor put it, "tech house with a twist." His state-of-the-art analog grooves emerged from the ether fully formed in 2019 with some of the deepest basslines and crunchiest melodies out there. Freels' squigly take on contemporary house and techno always comes primed with a dose of California sunshine. Carrying on the legacy of storied California predecessors like Halo and Hipp-E, he's been swiveling heads and moving bodies with releases on labels at the vanguard of the underground, like Kalahari Oyster Cult and Is/Was sub label TerraFirm, collaborations with Tornado Wallace as Dinnervisions, and a remix of his starry-eyed, "Scope Zone" by Youandewan landed him notoriety among the scenesters alike.

More than just a producer, Freels knows how to pack a punch behind the decks, moving from classic West Coast Breaks to UK tech house with aplomb and mastery. His bookings and podcasts have been piling up like hot cakes with best-in-class mixes for the likes of Honey Soundsystem, Butter Side Up and Faciendo and DJ appearances from Dimensions Festival to Panorama Bar.

Freels' music, as both a DJ and a producer, remains unparalleled in its ability to solder funk with deepness. His early releases that propelled him to prominence on labels like Melbourne’s Voyage Recordings and the Amsterdam based Kalahari Oyster Cult, displayed an almost encyclopedic knowledge of house music. As Urulu, Freels zig-zagged across time and space to create music that felt embryonically transatlantic alongside a sugar rush of rave nostalgia. He now uses the Liquid Earth moniker to bring that same intimate knowledge to the trippier corners of the cosmos. With a seemingly endless trove of creativity and energy congealing behind the Liquid Earth project, Freels is poised to continue his take over of club land's headiest and spaciest dance floors
