During a mid-March visit to Big Bend National Park in Texas, I recorded this immersive binaural soundscape at dawn in Santa Elena Canyon. It features wind blowing through a dense thicket of Carrizo Cane (an invasive species from Asia that is now common along the Rio Grande), which produces clicks and clatters as gusts pass through the stiff, bamboo-like reeds. Ravens nest in the canyon and croak repeatedly as they fly up and down the Rio Grande River, their calls echoing off the steep cliffs above. Such a pleasing, enveloping mix of the sounds of the wind, ravens and reeds!. Please wear headphones for optimal immersion!

Just spent a lovely long weekend in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. The first couple of days the weather was warm but windy, making recording difficult. But yesterday, the 1st of September was a perfect - 26 degrees celsius and no wind. Despite the chilly morning, the dawn birdsong was spectacular, as if the birds knew spring had arrived.

It was one of those rare times where all of the elements come together and make for a perfect soundscape - nothing to do with me or the recording gear - just pure nature at it's best. I'm going to make the recording into a album over the coming days - stay tuned!

Afternoon in Bardia National Park, Nepal, and the gentle sounds of insects fill the warm air. From the riverside vegetation, Red-vented Bulbuls call cheerfully & a pair of Oriental Pied Hornbills fly overhead. In the river, fish occasional skim across the surface, wary of the kingfisher perched nearby.

Thailand's deciduous forests are a type of tropical woodland and home to a diverse range of birds and wildlife. This recording was made in the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Thailand's most successful tiger reserves. 

In this sample you can hear the fluty calls of Black-hooded Oriole, the chattering of White-crested Laughingthrush and many other species including Lineated Barbet, Blue-bearded Bee-eater and Black Giant Squirrel.

This recording is part of the album 'Forest of Life' from the series 'Sounds of Wild Thailand' and features the vibrant sounds of Huai Kha Khaeng's forests from dawn until dusk.

It is predawn in a woodland in northern England. Trees drip with a heavy dew from overnight mists, and we hear the last of the nightbirds; tawny owl and woodcock.

The first songbirds begin, and a cuckoo starts up somewhere in the distance. Gradually more birds take up singing until the soundscape is a mass of intertwined themes. The main chorus is heard from outside the wood - a surrounding sea of birdsong.

Once the full chorus begins to wane, we re-enter the wood to hear more spacious scenes with a variety of singers.

The melodious voices of Blackbirds are often the first to begin the European spring dawn chorus.

This recording takes us into an old growth woodland, where Blackbird territories intersect, to hear several birds singing in lusty voice.

We first hear the opening notes of the dawn chorus, with tawny owls also calling nearby. We are then treated to a rich solo from a single Blackbird, which eventually opens into a rich chorus of morning birdsong; blue tits, chaffinches, nuthatch, raven and cuckoo.

Finally, something special. Blackbirds are an introduced species into Australia and New Zealand, and our concluding track features a dusk solo from one of these antipodean Blackbirds.

This album is a meditation on time and place in nature.

These soundscapes have all been recorded in Estonia, where most of the birds are migratory - arriving from their wintering areas in April or May, and starting to leave again at end of August.

The first piece puts us in early spring, with just a few sounds and the moody creaking of still bare trees. Then we move to a forest clearing, to witness the beginning of day in the company of a lone Black Grouse. The next tracks carry us to a babbling brook and riverside village with already migrating swallows. The final piece is set in a dark August evening with the chirping of bushcrickets - evoking the feeling of fading summer.
