Episode VIII: Food Lifestyles

This episode is all about co-ops helping co-ops! The sixth co-op principle is “Cooperation Among Cooperatives.” How do co-ops, well, cooperate? Host Anastasia takes us through a number of different ways that co-ops have been known to support one another. First, did you know that the Littleton Food Co-op is actually a member of other co-ops? One of those is the Neighboring Food Co-op Association (NFCA), and Bonnie Hudspeth is featured in this episode to tell you why it is imperative for co-ops to work together, and the results that can happen when they do so. We also step outside the consumer food co-op world to hear from Molly Snell-Larch of Columinate, a national consulting cooperative made up of diverse experts dedicated to making co-ops better. That’s Rad is celebrating National Co-op Month for October! Host Anastasia saw this sacred month as an opportunity to talk about the importance of being a co-op in a world full of for-profit businesses. The perfect case study showed up in the form of Nick Managan of Cabot Creamery Cooperative. Nick and Anastasia discuss how even though many consumers do not realize Cabot is a co-op, the cooperative principles have shaped their farming and business practices since 1919. Listeners will hear how Cabot’s cooperative status impacts it’s farmer owners, the communities they live in, and their consumers (that’s you!). It’s a half an hour about cheese and co-ops--do you really need another reason to listen?

Episode XII: Black, White, and a Co-op All Over

The beginning of each calendar year is filled with chefs, restaurant owners, food bloggers, and the like trying to predict what will fill our plates for the year. In this episode of That’s Rad, our host Anastasia, along with Masters in Integrated Food Studies candidate Keaton (@food.n.fits), add their own predictions to the pile. They took their mission very seriously, and think listeners will be quite pleased with how 2022 is going to look… as long as you like mushrooms. Episode XVII: Food Trend Predictions for 2022

In celebration of Earth Day and the blooming buds sure to soon hit the North Country, host Anastasia is exploring the connections between food and our environment for this episode of That’s Rad. To do this, she recruited Kris Pieper, Food Access Coordinator for Taproot in Lancaster, NH. Together, Kris and Anastasia discuss how food, the environment, and we who live in it all impact one another. Kris also shares more about the Taproot initiatives he runs, including gleaning and the Lancaster Community Garden. And yes, the word they’re saying is gleaning–not cleaning. Episode XIX: Food and the Environment

On this episode, host Anastasia is joined by Oliver Dixon of the Rhode Island based Matunuck Oyster Farm to talk about everything oysters! Oyster farming is basically a year-round process, but oyster consumption increases in the summer by 700% (a completely made up statistic). So there’s no better time to talk about it (also a completely made up statistic–it can and should be talked about during any month). Being from the state with the smallest coastline, we had little knowledge about oysters (other than that they taste yummy!). Anastasia and Oliver discuss how oysters develop, the environmental impacts of oyster farming, and favorite ways to prepare. Episode XXXV: Member Choice Awards 2023

What can we say? Sometimes we have our pantry staples on hand all the time, and then we take them for granted and forget to add them to the shopping list for the next trip. Does that make any sense? In any case, this is all to say we forgot to announce the winner of the “Best Local Pantry Staple” Award! This has nothing to do with the nominees or the winner and everything to do with host Anastasia just being a silly goose sometimes. There is only so much you can expect out of a twenty-something teenage girl. Deepest apologies! We had some incredible local nominees in this category, including: NEK Grains Whole Wheat Pancake Mix; McLure’s Wildflower Honey; Mount Cabot Maple Grade A Amber Rich Syrup; Polly’s Pancake Parlor Original Pancake Mix; White Mountain Apiary Organic Raw Honey; Maple Grove Farms Pancake/Waffle Mix; and Fullers Maple Cream. Episode XXXVI: Meet the Dorchester Food Co-op

The end of the year is a time for us to come together and connect over good food and drink. However, many folks, including our friends and neighbors in the Littleton area, don't have that privilege. Food insecurity is an issue for many in our community and beyond, but it is rarely discussed. To break that barrier, host Anastasia joins volunteers at the All Saints Food Cupboard in downtown Littleton, NH to see the reality of food pantry operations. This episode is all about challenging our preconceived notions of what others need and showing community care to our neighbors this holiday season.

Episode XXXVII: Support our Neighbors

On this episode of That’s Rad, host Anastasia takes a trip to downtown Bethlehem, NH to meet with Ian and Marlaina, Owners; and Phillip, the Marketing Manager, all of Rek-lis Brewing Company. The trio walks us through the story of the brewery, from its humble origins to becoming *the* place to be on a Saturday night. Ian and Marlaina also share with us their passion for keeping their lives “rek-lis,” and listeners will walk away feeling inspired to do the same. Episode XXXIX: We Have Got to Get Well

It’s no secret that we love local farms, and we are so lucky to have many to choose from in the North Country of NH and the NEK of Vermont. And even luckier for us, we’ve spoken to many of our well known and established area farms about their decades long histories and how the Littleton Food Co-op has grown alongside them. However, it’s rare that we get to hear the origin story of a farm while it’s still originating; what it’s like before the land has bloomed to life and the farm stand has a mile long line. Or in this case, before the farm stand has even been built. On this episode of That’s Rad, host Anastasia takes a trip out to Tellman Hill Farm to meet with its owners, Emily Meacham and Doug Morin. The husband-wife duo share their plans to take their plot of land in Whitefield, NH from empty space and baby trees in the ground to the area’s next premiere apple orchard. Emily and Doug’s story is a testament to how farming is a labor of love, and how taking a risk might just bring you to the life (and farm) of your dreams. This episode is great for folks interested in farming, cute dog lovers, and those interested in hearing Anastasia make a poorly thought out analogy to the 2011 film “We Bought a Zoo.”
