Those of you that have been following my work over the past years know that I am big fan of the art of editing, both, digging for and playing the edits of others and manufacturing them myself. Besides the many ones that have been released officially I made countless ones in the past years just to enhance my sets. Doing edits is simply a lot of fun, its a similar approach to remixing but yet different. There are no limits, from just editing tracks (in the literal sense) to make them longer (or shorter), DJ friendlier, or mash an instrumental of one track together with an acapella from another one to building up a complete new production and arrangement around an acapella or an instrumental, there are no limits to re-interpret the respected work of others. Today I decided to start sharing these works with you. I start today out with an edit that uses the elements of Kraftwerk’s “It’s More Fun To Compute“ and the vocals of Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force’s “Planet Rock” and put them over a rocking Electro beat. When Fejká launched his first studio album, Reunion last year listeners were quick to point out his eclecticism. With the release, the German electronic music producer cemented his style with sounds that are at once ethereal and dynamic, celestial but also very much grounded on the dancefloor. Fejká’s latest single, ‘Unfold’ continues to walk the tenuous line between introspection and expression, with wondrous melodies and driving beats. The track is restrained and subtle, taking mind and soul on a journey without climaxes or extremes. There’s a sense of warmth to Fejká’s compositions, which somehow approximate electronic soundscapes to something very personal, folksy even. “I think it’s important to always try out new sounds to keep the creative flow in my head alive. It feels satisfying to release something different and new because it helps me shape my music taste to an open-minded but still focused sound,” says the producer about his new track. ‘Unfold’ is definitely open-minded; moods, emotions and colours unfold with such nuance that pigeonholing the track in any specific genre is impossible. What’s absolutely clear though, is Fejká’s development and maturing into a producer who is increasingly confident to delve into an ever vaster range of emotions.

Floyd the Barber - Breakbeat Shop #049 (25.12.20) [no voice]

Liuos seemed to arrive on the dub techno scene all at once with Terms EP, his strong debut on Cold Tear Records, but this was the culmination of two decades of experimentation and discipline. A unique mix of power and spaciousness, of both longing and will, Liuos’ work stands out for its clarity and expansiveness. Working steadily from his modest studio in Finland, Liuos has quietly become a respected name in the world of dub techno, with releases on Cold Tear, Lucidflow, and spclnch, and remixes for Superordinate Dub Waves and Off Records (Belgium).
