Cabezas’ new EP “Raya” is a distillation of the conversations that have shaped him over the last decade. From the Danceteria-ready sheen of “Madonna” to the nocturnal-italo pulse of “Sergio”, Cabezas covers a wide swath of sonic ground, starting in almost-familiar places and spiraling out into the unknown. 

This is Cabezas’ second EP, following up his 2018 Börft Records release Mi Calle. 

Born in Chile and living in Sweden, Patricio Cabezas is a multi-talented musician/producer. After years as a touring bass player, he re-com- mitted himself to electronic music, trading his pickups for a circuit board in search of the boundaries of sound. 

Since childhood Cabezas has thrown himself into the in-between. With a life of hybrid timezones, cultures and identities, his approach to music is similarly liminal. Driven by discovery and experimentation, Cabezas hybridizes genres, themes and instrumentation to create electronic music that lives on the edge, built for the mains, headphones and everywhere in between.

Configurations Of Self off-shoot, Life Scripts welcomes back head honcho Alexander Church and James Welsh as Common Factors, as the pair deliver their second EP, ‘Perversions Of Loss’.

Title cut ‘Perversions Of Loss’ is a shimmering slice of entrancing electronica, delving deep with a medley of playful strings, breaks and distorted low-end frequencies. ‘Inference’ focuses on warped basslines, swirling synths and floating melodies all sitting upon a rolling break. Next up, ‘Existential Truths’ offers five and a half minutes of jungle influenced nostalgia, as we see Church and Welsh enlist off-kilter drums alongside trippy effects and oscillating synths. To close, ‘Escape Hatch’ is a raw and wonky techno track that perfectly marries the elements of light and dark. This latest EP highlights why Common Factors have been picking up love from the likes of Tom Ravenscroft on BBC6 Music, Ransom Note and a raft of top DJs.

Common Factors is a recently launched project from Bradford-based DJ and producer Alexander Church, alongside James Welsh. Church is label boss at Configurations of Self and produces music that takes deep inspiration from the human condition. James Welsh is a multi-faceted artist and former post punk band member who releases via leading labels including Futureboogie and Phantasy Sound, whilst frequently collaborating with Church on this and other projects.

Long-term Plaid collaborator Mason Bee steps out with more stunning solo work for his own Pollen Kit Recordings, with the always on-form Charles Webster contributing three remixes. A fantastic video from groundbreaking video artist Bob Jaroc also arrives with the new single, and all this leading to the re-issue of his debut album on vinyl.

Mason Bee (aka Benet Walsh) is the multi-instrumentalist who, for many years, has been a co-writer and touring partner with Warp's seminal UK electronic act Plaid. Last year he showed off his natural flare for melody and beautiful arrangements on his acclaimed debut album. It drew on folk, electronic and psychedelic sounds to serve up ever-morphing landscapes made from field recordings, acoustic instruments and DIY studio techniques. He now kicks off his 2021 with another innovative and enigmatic new single.

The gorgeous 'Lumito' has a groove constructed from clicks, zips and hits, while there is true beauty in the lead melody that drifts up top. Perfectly combining the synthetic with the acoustic, this naturalistic track has a lush sound with breezy vocal coos and live jazz drums that swell all around you as you gaze on in wonder. The accompanying music video is a perfect visual reflection of the record from creator Bob Jaroc (Plaid, Fatboy Slim, Paranoid London) which seamlessly mixes vintage textures, artificial intelligence, lasers and classic oil and dye techniques, weaving Mason Bee's track into a psychedelic magic carpet ride "through the conception and birth of the Lumito moon".

Revered UK veteran Charles Webster has been a core part of the underground for decades. Known for everything from house to downtempo and everything in between, he is associated with cult labels like Peacefrog and Defected. Last year, his ‘Decision Time’ album provided another sumptuous serving of his signature sounds with plenty of contemporary flourishes. His first remix here is a gorgeously airy and delicate fusion of folk, indie and electronic into a track that encourages daydreaming. The delicious Deep Dub is just that - something primed for getting lost in while it plays loud on a basement sound system, and the Reprise is pure ambient beauty with soul-enriching flutes, keys and smeared vocal sounds that help you ascend into the sky.

With this new single, Mason Bee once again steps out with a truly original sound, providing a timely reminder of why he is so essential, ahead of his debut album’s vinyl reissue on 7th May.

After a hiatus of three months Italian boutique-label Alzaya is back with yet another impressing release. Co-label head Volantis teams up with Chilean artist Paula Tape to deliver the three tracker Octava Dimension, which consists out of the original version of the artists' studio session , namely Octava Dimension, and remixes from Elias Mazian and Australian in-demand producer Tornado Wallace. Currently living in Berlin Lewis Day, Tornado Wallace's real name, is known, famous and loved for his experimental space rides through House Music, which has seen him release singles, EPs and (mini) LPs on labels such as Running Back, Optimo Music, ESP Institute, Mule Musiq or Beats in Space Records, just to name a few, over the past decade of his career. Far away from mainstream influences Tornado Wallace has developed a sound that seems to hit the zeitgeist and nerve of producers and artists from various genres. His discernment for implementing sounds and elements at the right time and spot in a track's sequence to keep it, the track, either going or intensify the momentum of it has brought him the reputation of creating excellence. The latter can be ascribed to his recent work, the remix for Octava Dimension, equally. Tornado Wallace deconstructs and reconstructs the original version adding a spacious note, a housey drum-pattern keeping the original dreaminess alive and manages to implement Paula Tapes' vocals subtle enough so that they fit pads and delicately integrated sounds in the same way and open a whole new experience or dimension for the listener.

Paula Tape & Volantis' EP Octava Dimension will be released on Alzaya on July 23rd, 2021.

There were always two sides to every story — whether you heard them both was another question. Whoever got there first generally had the upper hand anyway, anything that followed was subject to much more interrogation. Suspicion shrouded every fact and figure, speculation veered the conversation away from the matter at hand; you never get any closer to knowing the real truth. 

At just 19 years old, Utrecht-based producer Ineffekt's productions far belie his years. After making his debut last year on Dutch label Intercept with his 'Solaris' EP, he makes his return for his first ever long player, which retains the distinctive rhythms and warm subs we heard on his debut, but this time dives deeper into playful and euphoric melodies. A vibrant and colourful wash of synths, dreamy vocal snippets and fuzzy percussion; the 10 tracks on 'Kora' each have their own unique flavour and groove.
