On a rainy late September day in the mid eighties, 7 year old Phillip Lauer didn't know what to expect from that little new born G, who was referred to as his brother Jacob. On the other hand, Baby Jacob wasn't very sure of what to make of this - back then still sporty - youngster either, who behaved like his boss. To make a short story long... it took them almost 30 years to finally find out - behind the helm of the infamous Pyramide 2 Studio when conducting this fine piece of home made dance music: the Brudis EP.

It’s time to celebrate! At catalogue number 20 Uncanny Valley extends its compilation-concept to 12 tracks spread over three records (or as a bundle if you prefer digital).  With new music by label-regulars like Jacob Korn, Cuthead and Credit 00, friends like RVDS & K’Alexi or Filburt and fresh talents like Götterkreis & Steve Kasper it is an exciting ride along the winding roads through the Uncanny Valley. The three records are visually linked with distinctive artwork by the ever-reliable Paul Waak. 

Part 1 starts off in style with “Art Of The Track” by RVDS & K'Alexi Shelby. On their debut track for Uncanny Valley the Hamburg-Chicago duo created a classic tribute to the drum that evolves into a BIG track with a killer acid line and floating synths.  After that, Credit 00 shows off his newfound love for catchy sample choice once again. “Obsessed” is a killer track that also persuades with its catchy bass line. Sneaker delivers a bouncy remix for “Function” by Dresden’s Optokoppler. With extra vocals by himself and Ewa Smyk they play with sexual stereotyping in a fun and very danceable way. “2x4” by CV30X instead is dubby chords and spooky sounds with an easygoing vibe that extends CVBox’ much beloved sonic palette.

Having sailed into 2014 on fighting form, Revealed Recordings calls on a very special cluster of artists to give Hardwell and Matthew Koma's chart-topping "Dare You" its first run of remix duties. Originally premiered at Revealed Recording's ADE night at Passenger Terminal, the label calls upon a host of accomplished new blood set to keep this vocal anthem in heavy rotation for the New Year. Needing little introduction to the global dance community, Dutch icon Tiësto and young protégé twoloud unite with the utmost force to continue their powerful streak of collaborations. North American trio Cash Cash also take the reigns of the powerful vocal anthem, making for a positive run of label debuts for the first installment of remixes. With more still to come over the months ahead, "Dare You" looks unlikely to drop of the industry radar anytime soon.

An escar, in geological terms, is a long linear ridge in the superficial drift, including various pieces of gravel of considerable size, whose arrangement took place probably under water over which icebergs floated. 

The parallel is easy to draw with Escar’s self-titled debut EP, since every track is a musical piece of considerable size, all pertaining to the same strata of linear quality and fantastic sound design, all sharing an underwater realm feel as well as a distinctly melodic (yet technoid & breaky) organic nature. Angular, erratic blocks of sound are often deposited on the escar, and they beautifully contrast with the euphonic nature of the compositions. 

Another example of Danish producer Natal Zaks’ handsome aliases, Escar’s musical vocabulary is topical and elaborate and his new sound, as usual, evocative of states of mind unlived before. Escar playfully binds a sense of the sublime with concrete, contemporary techno, making this release a stunner in every way.

The Petrichor project is the latest incarnation of Simon Stokes and on this EP he returns to a hardware-driven sound creating tactile, organic atmosphere within this immaculately produced output. The name Petrichor refers to the smell of rain after a period of dryness and this unique, specific occurrence offers evocative memory and imagery to anyone who thinks on the meaning. The name is therefore important as many of the ideas conjured up through this impression are relevant to the musical style demonstrated on the EP. A sense of nostalgia, an ethereal and reflective quality and a connection with elemental atmosphere are themes that permeate the music, along with a strong rhythmic core, offering an innovative and expressive new sound. 

Title track On Tides opens the EP and is introduced with notes circling around a central melodic motif. Developed carefully, this part of the track dominates as it builds. The subtle evolution of synth and percussion elements bolsters the track as it rises higher and higher, honing in on a drop. However, the track recedes before the point it traditionally may go over the edge, and begins to build again. The tides of the title are mirrored in the instrumental cycle and the dynamic ebb and flow. Each of the parts introduced is dealt with delicately and expertly.

Nukumori is the next track on the EP and it starts with more prominent percussion. Atmospheric synths come in to fill up the soundscape and the track slowly broadens out into an engrossing sound. The field recordings and vocal samples afford this track a unique, original quality where the dynamics are once more well controlled. The end result is an invigorating and intriguing track that connects emotionally as well as sonically. 

Royston Rain completes this diverse range of tracks offering more unique and highly engaging content. Full and interesting field recordings provide an enchanting entry into the track. The flowing, aqueous noises infer a sense of narrative, as images of floating under rainforest canopies are brought to mind. The melody lines and synth are perfectly sparse and beats are brought in to add impetus at the right moments. This is a stimulating track and well poised, even incorporating some electronic sounds towards the end to frame everything and draw the sounds on into another style and another track. 

This EP and new Petrichor direction are exciting prospects for the young Glaswegian and marks a definite maturity in production technique . A range of quality music is packed into these three tracks making this an EP not to be missed for its scope and unique style.
