At the moment, I love the The Second Album by Suicide. Imagine disco meets shuffle meets cold wave.

Right now it would be, Gray – Shades Of… 

As your EP is called 'Expressions', what is your favourite expression? 
Moving.

What one piece of studio equipment could you not live without?
There is a lot of answers for this but I guess it would have to be an extension cable as it powers everything I do. I need electricity!

What was the first moment you realised that you wanted to be a producer?
Immediately after I graduated in June 2009, I realised I wanted to make music. 

If there was one person you could get in the studio with you would it be and why?
Mozart, I'd love to see what he would do with modern day equipment. I wouldn't want to work with him, i'd just like to see what he makes.

How does the creativity of working as an illustrator filter in your music?
I'm moving into Art Direction, I enjoy creating a world for the music. With the Mirror Image record there are two videos coming out which give the record more of a visual reflection than the EP did. I'm looking forward to making more videos and collaborating with others on different ideas. 

What was it like putting together your album?
Frustrating, exciting, liberating, hard, fun, challenging

How did it feel to finally have it completed?
Great, it was good to let go of those ideas and move on to new music.

What can we expect from you in the future? 
Live shows, colour, moving image and collaboration.

This Is Your Time! Vol.28 - Matthias Vogt With Toxido Mask

We first caught wind of maya q earlier this year though her sophomore release for London imprint All Centre. Anyone with a penchant for hot footing it to a takeaway after a late night booze up will have had a chuckle at the title of the first track. Merrily, I hastened to the chicken shoppe / beno (soft) marked maya's second outing on the well-respected label, following 2021's I just wanna. 

Both EPs, along with the releases' predecessor on Scuffed Recordings, showcase her experimental approach to creating swung rhythms, low end frequencies and syncopated drum patterns inspired by jungle, UK bass, breaks and UKG, but with her own unique melodic and playful touch.

When maya isn't making music, she DJing as part of the Co-Select crew alongside the likes of TSUNIMAN, Airali and Will Hofbauer, the latter of whom released her most recent musical outing, break rev, on his Third Place imprint.

We got her on board for a mix that threads together the music she loves from poppy electronics to ethereal jungle, liquid DnB and playful vox-soaked rhythms.

Toxido Mask is someone who goes a bit deeper with her sounds, her approach to sound design and her DJ sets. You can’t help but to feel the storytelling and her passion for natural detail throughout it all. She is currently a resident at Tresor Berlin and oversees the artistic direction of the 'OMM Transmission' Podcast | Events series. You will find deep hypnotic textures intricately laced with elements of finely tuned energy. Toxido Mask’s background as a Sound Designer sees a meticulous approach to developing the rich character of her works, giving the listener an almost synesthesic experience. Despite it technically being mid-summer in June (not August), this Garden was a belter.  There was a RiteTrax festival on at the Bolehills during the day and when that finished the hordes descended on the Hallamshire making it one of the busiest yet.  I had an early evening set and played some deep Techno with a splash of trance at the end, enjoy!

ーミックスの録音環境を教えてください。
 
ラップトップとtraktorといくつかのMIDIコントローラを使ったよ。MiDIコントローラーの中には僕が開発に携わっているプロトタイプバージョンもあるよ。サウンドは、一度僕のスタジオのアナログ卓(Valvesってとても音が良いんだ！)に通して、そこから別のPCにレコーディングしたよ。
 
 
ーミックスを録音した場所を教えてください。
 
僕のスタジオで夕方から始めた。終わったときは朝だったよ。Mixはファーストテイク、そして全てはその夜に作ったものなんだ。僕の好きな部分は即興であるがゆえのミスから生まれているよ。僕は現場のようなリアルなミックスが好きなんだ。
 
 
ーこのミックスのコンセプト、またはアイデアを教えてください。
 
ダンスミュージックのみに留まらず、ありとあらゆる音楽的なバックグラウンドから派生する、このミックスに収録されているような「ポストダンス」ムーブメントがシーンの中で起きていると感じるんだ。でもこれって狭いシーンの中からでは感じづらいかもしれないけど、貴方達とそれを一緒に感じて、ダンスへと誘うために、僕はそのことを文章で書いたり、実際に音楽をプレイしてそれをデモンストレートする。
 

ー近況と最近の活動について教えてください。
 
DJ-Kicks (Studio !K7)のリリースツアーをハードにやっているよ。大変じゃないけどね。
 

ー今後の活動予定を教えてください。
 
たくさんのアイデアをスタジオでレコーディングするために、今はちょっと休憩しているよ。それらが全てレコーディングされたらハッピーになれるだろうね。

Since completing her Sound Design studies, she has been producing music. Tracing her path in this musical journey, she is both developing her style and aiming to fulfill her vision: through the concept "Carthasis" she is tapping deeper into the complexity of sound and bringing like-minded people together.
Currently, she works together with SaraMé on their upcoming label: "Modex21", where they also will be releasing their own music.

Toxido Mask è uno di quei nomi che riusciamo ad associare senza troppi dubbi alla Berlino underground quella che per molti non esiste più ma che in realtà resiste ancora grazie ad artisti come Julia. ​Hoppetosse, Mensch Meier o Griessmuehle questi alcuni dei locali dove i suoi extend set prendono forma spaziando da sonorità ambient fino alla techno più scura ed industriale. Julia Żyła è il moniker che ha scelto per il suo percorso parallelo che la vede immergersi tra suoni ambient e sperimentali ispirati alla natura e al concetto di catarsi. Un mixato che vi farà tornare in mente quel sapore di clubbing rude e spartano che questo isolamento forzato ci sta facendo dimenticare, orgogliosi di presentarvi Toxido Mask!
