Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former two-division champion described Charlo as fighter now “looking for a free cheque” following his lacklustre performance against Alvarez — a lopsided decision loss where he was widely panned for fighting to survive, not win.

“And because I knew this fight would eventually happen I’ve always kept that sparring session in the back of my head.

“Even when I’m preparing for other fighters -- when I have a specific tactic I’m working against -- I will always think ‘how would this work against Dylan’.

The Tszyu name is well known in boxing as Tim is the son of former world champion Kostya Tszyu and the 28-year-old climbs into the ring with a perfect mark of 23-0 with 17 Ko’s. He stands just under 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 72-inch and possesses better-than-average power with an impressive current knockout ratio of 73.9 per cent but has gone the distance in two of his last four fights.

He’s boxed 117 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 following a good amateur career and has also captured the interim WBA Oceania, WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental, IBF Australasian, Commonwealth, WBO Global, and Australian Super Welterweight Titles since turning pro. Tszyu’s first step up in class came in August, 2020 when he stopped former world champion Jeff Horn in the seventh round.

Currently, Mendoza is a +255 underdog for his fight against Tszyu in October. This affords Mendoza a 28.2 percent implied chance of winning the bout. That is what we consider a puncher’s chance, and fortunately for Mendoza, he is bringing cement fists with him to Australia.

In 16 of Mendoza’s 22 wins, he has won by KO. Dating back to March 26, 2023, Mendoza is on a three-fight TKO/KO streak. In his most recent assignment, the 29-year-old Albuquerque native laid out Sebastian Fundora (20-1-1) in Round 7.

Tszyu has also faced legitimate contenders in Terrell Gausha and Takeshi Inoue as they both fought for world titles in the past and also has wins over the likes of Dennis Hogan, Wade Ryan, Jack Brubaker, Ruben Webster, Larry Siwu, Denton Vassell, Joel Camilleri and the late Dwight Ritchie.

Malignaggi suggested the champ should have to fight Tszyu next rather than undisputed welterweight king Terence Crawford, who appears likely to move up.

He halted former world champion Tony Harrison in the ninth round three months earlier to capture the interim title and was elevated to full champion when Jermell Charlo was stripped of the belt when he recently fought Canelo Alvarez.

“Instead of getting Crawford, he [Charlo] should now have to fight Tim Tszyu after that performance,” Malignaggi said.

Like Tszyu, Biggs is also undefeated, earning seven of 10 wins via knockout – including his first round demolition of Ryan Mitchem when headlining last month’s No Limit on Fox card.

However, the most talked about scalp on his resume has always been that of Tszyu, who he is rumoured to have kayoed during a 2021 sparring session in Queensland.

Mendoza last boxed in April when he was well behind on all three scorecards but scored a sensational knockout over Sebastian Fundora in the seventh round for the WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Title.

“At the start of my career, I had health issues, was battling with my feet, I’d had eight years off and was dumped back in the deep end.

Tim Ta-Zoo hasn’t done sh!t in boxing,” Charlo told Ben Damon of Main Event (h/t BoxingScene). “Mendoza is knocking Tim Ta-Zoo out. Now what yah gonna say? Holler at me. Hey Australia, I love you all. I’ll be coming over there to eat some kangaroo meat with you, hang out in Sydney and party with you all.”

Regardless of the outcomes of the two fights, the hope for many boxing fans is that Jermell Charlo and Tim Tszyu will end up fighting one another soon. It’s a fight fans have wanted for quite some time, but before that happens, Charlo is focused on Alvarez.

Charlo enters the fight against Alvarez as the betting underdog but has plenty of confidence going into Saturday’s fight.

While the champ has never spoken publicly of the incident, it was Tszyu who surprisingly revealed all during a Thursday afternoon fight announcement inside the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.

None of his first 16 opponents entered the ring with a winning record though but the last eight have. His biggest wins have been over Fundora, Jeison Rosario and Thomas LaManna and will be taking another step up in class this weekend against Tszyu.

Tszyu isn’t quite at the same level as his famous his father but is getting there as he possesses plenty of power and speed in his fists. Mendoza equals him in power and this could be a rock’em sock’em battle for as long as it lasts.

Without prompting, the youngster confirmed that not only had he sparred Briggs shortly before his professional debut, but he had been “dropped” by a punch in round five -- however quickly added “it didn’t hurt, more caught me off balance”.

Tszyu then went on to explain how the moment had also fueled countless decisions he has made since, with the fighter revealing he is ready for a “weight to be lifted” when they now throw down again.

While describing its removal from the contest as “troublesome”, he said there was no intention to strip Charlo even if he had gone and taken the undisputed super middleweight crown from Alvarez last Sunday.

While WBO officials stripped Charlo of their title last Sunday — after he chose to face boxing megastar Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas instead of Tszyu, his mandatory – Fox Sports Australia can reveal WBC officials have no intention of doing the same.

While Mendoza is currently the WBC interim champion, he has chosen to vacate that strap to face Tszyu for the WBO title.

While there have been calls for Charlo to be stripped of all his belts, WBC president Mauricio Sulaimán has explained his decision to support the champ, while also revealing he had wanted the organisation’s interim belt up for grabs in the Australian title blockbuster.

Unbeaten Tim Tszyu of Australia will be putting his new WBO Junior Middleweight Title on the line against Brian Mendoza of Albuquerque, New Mexico this Saturday, October 14th (Oct 15th in Australia). The 12-rounder takes place in Broadbeach, Australia and can be seen live in America on Showtime. Tzsyu last fought in June when he stopped Carlos Ocampo in the first round. 

Meanwhile, Malignaggi has surprisingly backed Tszyu to not only beat Charlo should they throw down to unify the division, but knock cold the man who currently still owns the IBF, WBA and WBC super welterweight straps.

Tszyu has been keeping busy and will not have any rust stepping into the ring against Mendoza. After he won with a TKO over Harrison, the only boxer to beat Charlo, Tszyu turned his attention to Ocampo on the Gold Coast.

That fight was easy work for Tszyu, as well. Tsyzu ended things in the first round with a brutal knockout of Ocampo. Moments after the opening bell rang, “The Soul Taker” had Ocampo on his heels and off balance.

It was a terrible effort from Ocampo, but Tszyu was on a mission to not leave Round 1 without a victory. With Charlo coming off a layoff, this would have been the perfect spot for Tszyu. Nevertheless, he must forget about Charlo and look forward to Mendoza.
