The female capybaras are singing as they excitedly walk over to the separate enclosure where the male capybara lives. They sing to him, rub their morillos (scent gland on the nose) and send him chemical messages (urine and faeces)

Capybara Sings To Her Lover


I am passionate about capybaras! I have spent at least 8 months of every year for the past 5 years living with or observing capybaras. I also studied ethology, (animal behaviour). The capybaras at Nagasaki Bio Park, in Kyushu live as a herd and it is fascinating to watch the way they interact with each other. Romeo and Tuff'n are 2 neutered male capybaras who live with friends of mine in Henderson, Nevada. They live as members of the family and sleep in the family bed. I have probably spent more time watching and learning about capybaras than almost anyone else. They are the most fascinating and captivating animals I have ever encountered. They are immensely social and gregarious and respond to petting like no other animal. Their hair rises until they look like a giant puffball and their facial expression shows they are in absolute ecstasy. They make the most beautiful vocalisations. Nothing can compare with the magical sound of a number of capybaras all singing in unison. Every time the female capybaras at the Biopark go to visit the male, who unfortunately is kept on his own in a separate enclosure, they sing loudly to him and he responds.
I have also written several books about Indonesia.   And organised an exhibition about Japanese culture. I worked for many years in the London Art World, writing about art. 
My other interests include travelling off the beaten track in fairly remote parts of the world, human evolution, geology and almost everything to do with Japan, the country in which I grew up.
