The harems have opened
in this year of our Lord
and Sex has jumped out of the windows,
the executive suites and the doors-
we've seen its breasts,bared
in celestial timidity
like the writing on postcards,
and women keep shedding
like petals in a lighted proscenium,
A great wave of nudes has rolled up
and crashed over the cathedrals.

The hustlers have come
with their books and their screens and revues-
a great Empire of Assholes
drowning the cities
with commercialized sperm.
It's hard to escape
to one's work or one's loves:
the wolf-whistle of promiscuous
sex,stored up in warehouses
or spurting its drops on the media,
hornily nips at our heels,
overtaking the newspaper ads,
tailing one on the freeways
or soaking the least of the villages
with its genital aqueduct.

Literature has crossed
into the century,phallus by phallus,with arabesque
demeaning our anguish
with books- a backwash of filth,all
flooding one way to the sewers
of susceptible spirits.

The garden was good once
in its hairiness,without any gardeners;
but a black tangle of creepers
has unfolded the bush of its fear
in the books of the destitute.

The page that was white
and seemed blank as the moon
has changed its inheritance
for a grimace of dreary immodesty,
There are no longer books,only
lights to be read-
five syllables of sun,
one naked word
in the rational sign of our purity.

I keep thinking it'll be the last time I'll be recording here, the last of the Make Believe Ballroom. Then I remember, we are spinning around here courtesy of the planet.
I see the earth spinning slowly covered in an icy filament, a filament of lace
a filament that carries messages between trees, between all living things, It dissembles,disassembles,reassembles. A woman in a ballroom gown. Dying stars and stars being born...and the band plays on. AH...I hear Stax/Sun/VOLT sweet ghost music coming in and out, through the trees here. So, load the juke box up and we can dance slowly together.

Styrofoam cups stuck on cactus spines
dogs defending crimes hidden behind chain link fences
kids on skateboards hollow stares
outside the library in a mall of broken dreams the stores are bare 
the mountains burning there's no snow this year
a day of rain don't take seven days it's seven years of drought in the making 

(heads all buried in the sand 
I am just an anchor in the storm
bashed around
but still in a holding pattern
Mercury plays tricks on me
tonight we'll see Saturn's rings 
and a super moon on the horizon
A waterfall of shooting stars
I wished on them every one 
that the long dark nights would soon be gone for everyone
and that everyone could find their way to freedom )

The kingdom you are stubbornly defending
where you are your own worst enemy
it takes so much energy to set your course  to hoist the sails 
 to be once again ascending

to be only another force of nature
a tree bending 
a seed unfurling 
It takes a human heart so long in the mending
to become a burning meteor circling around the sun.

Almost impossible to live with awareness
that you will do this hide and seek
to get back to your comfort zone
cave, prison cell where you think you belong
learning better how to feel shame
you never feel humble enough.

Endlessly bi cycling drunken Li PO
crashing into the moon
Embedded again and again on a becalmed pirate ship
heading South.
Forgetting all about your dance partner.

(But I should have known)
It's only you, setting us up for a fall again...

All the mundane things I should be doing today
frying pans and fires
as if doing something has something to do
with anything.
You can see that I am floating away
You tell me we will never be free
Here's our consolation
drinking water from a broken cup
Here's our consolation prize, baby
