Hoyte van Hoytema, director of photography for "Her", utterly mesmerised me with the subdued, pastel-color palette in this particular scene. I then noticed the music, and I knew that I would at one point go back and learn it myself. Encapsulated in discussions about the film, I forgot about my vow to play this piece for a while. One day I remembered, so I listened to the original version, scribbled away for a while, and this is the result. 

The scene from the motion picture "Her" from which it is taken is that of Theodore and Samantha's day out on the beach. Theodore lays down in the sand, and Samantha composes (and performs) this piece for the occasion. It is a tranquil, serene piece which calls for a meditative approach from the listener's part. 

'Song on the Beach' mirrors the sound and atmosphere of Satie's 1st Gymnopédie hauntingly well. While the time signature of Satie's piece is, perhaps, more rigid, 'Song on the Beach' - with its swaying, undefined, at times almost imperfect tempo, creates an ephemeral, timeless sound.

Written in 1890, Debussy's Reverie was one of his first solo piano works to make an impact. Even at this early stage in his career, when he was still working out what kind of composer he wanted to be (he was apparently a fervent debater when it came to Wagnerism), it's clear to see traits of that signature Debussy sound.

However, the young Debussy had not quite developed the style and tricks that would earmark him as one of his generation's most notable talents. There are no fireworks here, no sudden explosions in texture that would come to characterise his later works - this is more of a meditation, the perfect precursor to exploring those later works.

The gently repetitive theme that opens the work feels like a descent into sleepy dream-world (as the title suggests), and as the textures become ever richer the dreams only become more lush and addictive. A fantastic early sign that this Debussy fellow was one to watch…
