"I wanted to be at the forefront of the beat that would storm the world." The renowned musician talks about how reggae became the sound of resistance in the UK.

How did reggae become the sound of resistance in the UK? In this RA Exchange, the influential Barbados-born guitarist, bass player and record producer Dennis Bovell talks about moving to South London aged 12 and navigating its tense racial and musical landscape. Through the music he wrote and produced, he responded directly to racist rhetoric and colonialist attitudes rocking the UK. After the arrival of the Empire Windrush ship in June 1948—which brought a generation of Caribbean people over to rebuild post-war Britain—the UK experienced new social pressures as the diaspora assimilated to their new lives. But London also became a melting pot of creative and cultural diversity. Reggae became resistance music, and artists like Bovell became bandleaders.

Bovell speaks with writer and musician Tony Nwachukwu about music as social commentary, especially in his reggae band Matumbi, which was intentionally provocative, aiming to challenge the status quo and give voice to the Black British experience through its lyrics, themes and messaging. Matumbi was critical in developing the British reggae sound, and Bovell went on to record other musical projects that were key in shaping the early days of reggae, dub and lover's rock.

He also reflects on his time engineering for artists in different scenes, like the German electronic duo Saâda Bonaire, the Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Bovell's unique ability to bring together different musical styles at the peripheries of dub made him a highly sought-after collaborator with a knack for navigating delicate dynamics in the industry, especially for Black artists. The voices echoed over the water as the boat reached the port. On board there were elegant dancers, shrieks and yells of joy as the sun set in the distance casting a glimmering shimmer over the soft rolling waves.

This was true love – the beauty of the moment, one to be savoured and cherished in time.

The air was hot and thick – soon they would all disembark and wander onwards into the night. They’d lose themselves on dry land only to reminisce one day about the true love they’d found out on the water.

Tapes never fails to deliver when it comes to a classy dub or rework. This time he reimagines the sound of a cult classic from Laurie Miller. A track called ‘True Love’ which is drenched in sun kissed disco energy and remodelled into a crafty, deeper tool with rolling percussion and a heady energy.

Highly recommended.

This is the rare internet-only Real-Audio 'teaser' mix that preluded the launch of the Rotters Golf Club site in Sept. 1999.

Streaming was pretty poor back then, so sound quality is a little lacking (lossy, squelchy, artifacts etc) , but get past that and it's a great and rare downtempo/ambient electronic mix from Andrew Weatherall, considering he was going for it with the electro/machine/funk by around that point. 

I don't know ANY of the tunes on this, so any help IDing them would be cool. Enjoy!

In Hour 2 It's DJ Food with his Solid Steel 30 'A Dream Within A Dream Within A Dream' mix featuring Humanoid. Part of Solid Steel since the early 90's and still producing incredible mixes, this time including a special exclusive mix within. He had this to say;
'What to do to celebrate 30 years of Solid Steel? The original eclectic mix show with the broadest beats in London - how about try something a bit different? I wanted to take a bunch of motorik, minimal tracks and fuse them together into a steady pulse of polyrhythms and then add more layers. Almost treating sections of songs like samples, building layers over each other to create a bigger picture rather than two tracks end to end. Some appear for seconds, some repeatedly thread in and out of the mix, it twists and turns and wrong-foots you occasionally, switching the mood. 
Also within the set is an Easter egg - an exclusive, newly recorded nest of tracks by Humanoid (aka Brian Dougans) who, when Solid Steel started out, was simultaneously launching his own career with the success of his acid classic, 'Stakker Humanoid', in the British pop charts 30 years ago. Originally a fan of Solid Steel radio himself and later forming the Future Sound of London with Gary Cobain, their incredible radio mixes would in turn be a huge inspiration to me in the 90s.
After 25 years as part of the Solid Steel team and after hundreds of hours of mixes, it's great to still be inspired to push myself even further than before with this mix and be among such esteemed company as the show morphs once again into a new era.'
