I know things got a bit confusing for those of you paying attention to the daily Interbay posted tracks (this is the 301st track posted in 301 days!) due to one of the tracks being taken down and then, after a dispute, returned to the page (that would be the rockin' tune "Novelty"--check it out if you haven't--though it is official the 300th Interbay SoundCloud Exclusive, it's being backdated to the day it was originally supposed to be dropped--BUT, I think we're back on track...and it's time to "Level Up!"  

The first time I ever saw an IMAX movie was at Great America in Gurnee, Illinois--I think it was a school trip, of all things.  The movie that they showed was "To Fly"...and it showed in a purpose-built IMAX theater in the theme park, not like the IMAX-ish screens they may have at the multiplex.  The screen must have been six stories tall and nearly as wide--it stretched way over our heads and it went on down beneath the floor.  We were expecting something amazing.  

...and then, "To Fly" starts out...and it is some credits in a small part of this huge screen...and then, we see blue skies--but only in a compatively small square in the middle of this gigantic screen.   Everyone, myself included, felt the disappointment...that we'd been promised something grand and it was so anti-climactic.  The opening scene is set in the 1830s, and a man is about to set off in a hot air balloon and the locals had come out to watch.  (The sound, was incredible--great use of the full stereo spectrum.)  

...but as the balloon lifts off the ground and the balloonist yells to the locals below, "It is magnificent, I wish you could ALL see what I see," the  image suddenly spreads across the entire screen...and all of that disappointment turned into pure joy and astonishment.  

While not so grandiose or at all astonishing, I was going for a similar reaction with the beginning of "Level Up!"  What starts off sounding like a rather thin recording of an 80s style funky pop tune heard on a badly tuned radio suddenly opens up to a rich and full sized version of the song.  (I guess what I'm doing is warning you--don't adjust your volume right away or you'll blast your ears off!)  

This may be the poppiest of all of the mutant pop produced under the Interbay name.  The tempo isn't as frantic as others, the 808s are not only dropping the beat on the one but pushing sub frequencies to challenge your speakers.  The song has some solid male pop soul vocals...and there's a breakdown rap about 3/4ths of the way through.  

The song also has some acoustic guitar, some funky analog synths, some very 80s digital fm bell synths, some B-3 organ, some dark and echoey strings, finger snaps, and plenty of use of the full stereo spectrum.  

It's pop, with a definite 80s vibe...some concessions to hip hop, slow electro, and classic synth funk.  Or what I'm going to say is what we would call pop.  (But, being Interbay...it's a mutated sort of pop.)  

If you love Interbay's uptempo stuff--be it electronic dance music or post-punk rock, this might seem like a big change--but Interbay is a big tent and pretty much every sound or style could someday fit underneath it.

The nostalgia is strong with me this month, it seems, as once again we're gonna go back...back in time.  This time to the 70s.  And the 80s.  And the 90s.  And the 00s.  

This latest Interbay track is pure 70s disco, with horns, flutes, and a beat that never ends.  
This latest Interbay track is pure 80s new wave dance, with digital and analog synths.
This latest Interbay track is pure 90s house music, with minimal vocals and that four on the floor.
This latest Interbay track is pure 00s filter funk, with...ummm...filters.  And funk.  

...all of that gets tossed into the infamous blender, here at Phantom Laboratories West, and once again the puree button is pushed...and just over five minutes later, VOILA!  

More Interbay.  (Just what everybody wants, right?)  

I can draw a straight line between all of these genres, because this is all what I grew up with, what I danced to, what I dj'd (and made others dance to).  Too many people (in the US, at least) think that disco died with the Disco Demolition at Comiskey Park, but it never has--it just went underground, changed names, blended itself into other trends, and kept reappearing to influence the next generation who just want some music that is good to dance to...  

I think this Interbay track WOULD be good to dance to, even though it is a Frankentstein monster of all of those different (but related) and separated in time, elements.  It all seems very natural to me to put all of this stuff into a musical "failure pie in a sadness bowl."  (Thanks, Patton!)  

There are elements of this track I think that suggest that it might be an extended discomix (where's Tom Moulton when you need him?) or maybe even a dub mix, found on the flipside of the 12" single, for adventurous dj's to mess around with.  

...of course, that suggests that there's an "original" version of this song, meant for radio (which is the only place where disco truly died--American radio.)  

There isn't.  (And that shouldn't surprise you at all, if you've been following Interbay at all...)

Four minutes of hard funk--that's what we're serving up from the kitchen this Saturday afternoon.  Dig in!  

There are six different synths on this track, three different guitars, live bass and live drums, some handclaps, some edits, and a few p-funk all-stars (royalty free) vocal samples.  

This track is fast (for funk), and squidgey (the synth sounds), and skritchy (the funk guitars) and a total workout (the bass and drums.)  Unapologetically a straight ahead funk track--no post-punk aspirations, no pop affectations.  The pedal is to the floor from the start and stays pedal to the metal right through the finishline.  (And then the most abrupt stop in Interbay history.)  

This should be good Saturday night party music...and please drop me a comment if you play this at a party and your partygoers get into it.  :)

I'd also ask you a favor.  Two days ago, the Interbay track "Lost Without You (Out There)" was posted and I would love it if you would give THAT a listen, too.  It is VERY different from "Ooh, I Like That" (today's track)...but I think they're both good and both worthy of your ears.  

Right now, as I type this, "Lost Without You (Out There)" has only had 8 listens (not that only 8 people liked it--only 8 people clicked "play" to give it a chance and find out if they'd like it.)  For whatever reason, occasionally the algorithm just decides "THIS Interbay track will be ignored."  The vast majority of Interbay tracks get between 120 and 150 listens--the top Interbay track has over 2500...and "Lost Without You (Out There)" has only had 8.  

It deserves more...so, the favor I'd ask of you (on top of the "listen to 'Ooh, I Like That', give that a like, do all the stuff for THAT track) is that you give "Lost Without You (Out There)" a listen, too.  (If you feel like giving it a like or the other things...awesome--but I'm just asking you to give it a listen.)
