Music has always been a part of my life. I have been fortunate to experience blues, rock, disco, soul and R&B, opera, folk music and jazz at such a young age. With the introduction of Rap in 1973, my music landscape would change forever. I was 5 when I heard Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five on the radio. It sounded so different and alive! In 1979 would thumb through al my aunts records of Michael Jackson, Prince and more. I started collecting music in high school in the form of radio mixes from WBMX (now B96) and WGCI (107.5) in Chicago. The Hot Mix Five would come on WGCI while WBMX would broadcast Bad Boy Bill. Eventually House music became so popular that all the radio station DJ's would do clubs and switch in between channels. Even Northwestern University had a station call WNUA. I could only get that station if I was closer to the lake. WNUA always played Rap and House, Fresh tracks that no one else would play. So when I could record WNUA, I became very cool, very quickly. I used to sit at home on a Friday night and press record on my tape deck for rap and house. Eventually, I would follow my brother around to Max's house. Max was a house music DJ. He and my brother did gigs all over the northwest suburbs. Every Saturday he and max would go to the city and by records. That was the first time, I realized I could be a DJ. I loved going into the stores and thumbing through records and listening to them. I begged Max to let me spin but he rarely let me. Looking back, I understand why. He owned Technique 1200's and an awesome Numark mixer. And then came Bad Boy Bill. So I begged my brother Anthony to let me go out with him one night when I turned 16. He gave me his ID and I used it to get into clubs with him. On this night in Elgin, we walked into a club where Bad Boy Bill was spinning. I had listened to his ear blurring scratches on WBMX.
