Released in May 2015 Grasscut’s third album, ‘Everyone Was A Bird’ was a critical success, hailed as "Inspiring" by The Wire, “Thoughtful and beautifully reflective" by Electronic Sound and "As much an all-encompassing art piece as it is a pop record” by Q. 12 months we now have ‘Everyone Was A Bird – Remixed’, featuring a hand-picked selection of musicians and producers, including the likes of Fink, John Metcalfe, Mira Calix and Penguin Café, who have each reworked the album in their own style.

“When we came up with the idea of releasing a remixed version of Everyone Was A Bird, we drew up an A-list of remixers. Simply, we selected people if we were fans of their work. We were a bit overwhelmed when they all said yes,” explains Grasscut's Andrew Phillips.

“Fink did this mix of Islander while looking at an abandoned ice factory in East Berlin. He’s really got inside the guts of the song, and taken them down into the depths. You could lose yourself in that bass.

We’re both admirers of John Metcalfe’s work with Durutti Column, as well as his solo material. Andrew remixed John’s track Parsal a little while back, and he more than returned the favour on Radar. It’s such a great reimagining of the song, using the original parts so creatively as well as adding new ones to create a beautiful orchestral machine.

Seamus Fogarty’s debut album, God Damn You Mountain, was a crafty and stunningly original mix of acoustic and electronic, raw and fried. We thought he would work some of this magic with Curlews. He did.

Oliver Coates is a brilliant cellist, but here shows a different kind of fluency, with this digital transmogrification of Fallswater from a pastoral hymn to a waterfall to an electronic cataract.

Irish singer-songwriter Adrian Crowley evokes the beaches of Connemara with this elegant sober reimagining of Snowdown, whilst composer Mira Calix goes all Wickerman on Halflife. The granular synth and haunting vocals have been running around our heads since she sent this back.

Leo Abrahams honours Vince Sipprell’s viola beautifully in this remix of The Field. Vince died at the start of 2015, so this is particularly poignant, for Leo and for us. Like many producers, I don’t think Leo realises how good his voice is. Favourite moment: when he takes over and sings the second chorus. A really sensitive reimagining of the original song.

Finally Penguin Cafe seize Red Kite and create a live evolving landscape from the main melody. They gradually drop in the sample of Siegfried Sassoon and the lead vocals to create something deeply hypnotic – an epic and fitting closer to the album.”

The end result is an album that works as the perfect companion piece to the original, respectful without being reverential ‘Everyone Was A Bird – Remixed’ teases apart and highlighting the original tracks individual elements, opening up new vistas and providing us with a fresh perspectives of these songs.

Leave A Trace (Four Tet Remix)

Taken from their critically acclaimed third album ‘Everyone Was A Bird’, ‘Radar’ is the new single from Grasscut, the duo of Andrew Phillips and Marcus O’Dair. 

Literally, and metaphorically, about the search for illumination ‘Radar’ was written by Phillips on a clear cold night in a forest in mid Wales, whilst lights from both across the estuary and the ancient stars above flickered through the trees, and borrows its title and chorus line ‘the world is dark as radar’ from American poet George Oppen. 

Featuring propulsive drums, intense Moog bass, clipped pizzicato strings that ping like photons from Geese and vocals from Elisabeth Nygård and Andrew Phillips, Radar is a highlight of an album described as “inspiring “ by The Wire and “thoughtful and beautifully reflective" by Electronic Sound.

Accompanying the original is a remix by noted New Zealand born composer and violinist, and former member of the Durutti Column, John Metcalfe who carefully deconstructs the song, teasing apart each individual element allowing us to immerse ourselves in each individual note.

Speaking Gently

I wrote this song a couple years ago after hearing about the murder of Trayvon Martin. Since then, the count of young Black men that have been wrongfully murdered at the hands of Police Officers have continued to ascend. Butcher Brown and I, recorded this song for our "Braxton Cook meets Butcher Brown" project last year and since then it has become one of the favorite songs at our shows. People seem to really connect with the songs message and with the feeling it evokes. I hope that this song helps someone who really needs it.

Released in May 2015 Grasscut’s third album, ‘Everyone Was A Bird’ was a critical success, hailed as "Inspiring" by The Wire, “Thoughtful and beautifully reflective" by Electronic Sound and "As much an all-encompassing art piece as it is a pop record” by Q. 12 months we now have ‘Everyone Was A Bird – Remixed’, featuring a hand-picked selection of musicians and producers, including the likes of Fink, John Metcalfe, Mira Calix and Penguin Café, who have each reworked the album in their own style.

“When we came up with the idea of releasing a remixed version of Everyone Was A Bird, we drew up an A-list of remixers. Simply, we selected people if we were fans of their work. We were a bit overwhelmed when they all said yes,” explains Grasscut's Andrew Phillips.

“Fink did this mix of Islander while looking at an abandoned ice factory in East Berlin. He’s really got inside the guts of the song, and taken them down into the depths. You could lose yourself in that bass.

We’re both admirers of John Metcalfe’s work with Durutti Column, as well as his solo material. Andrew remixed John’s track Parsal a little while back, and he more than returned the favour on Radar. It’s such a great reimagining of the song, using the original parts so creatively as well as adding new ones to create a beautiful orchestral machine.

Seamus Fogarty’s debut album, God Damn You Mountain, was a crafty and stunningly original mix of acoustic and electronic, raw and fried. We thought he would work some of this magic with Curlews. He did.

Oliver Coates is a brilliant cellist, but here shows a different kind of fluency, with this digital transmogrification of Fallswater from a pastoral hymn to a waterfall to an electronic cataract.

Irish singer-songwriter Adrian Crowley evokes the beaches of Connemara with this elegant sober reimagining of Snowdown, whilst composer Mira Calix goes all Wickerman on Halflife. The granular synth and haunting vocals have been running around our heads since she sent this back.

Leo Abrahams honours Vince Sipprell’s viola beautifully in this remix of The Field. Vince died at the start of 2015, so this is particularly poignant, for Leo and for us. Like many producers, I don’t think Leo realises how good his voice is. Favourite moment: when he takes over and sings the second chorus. A really sensitive reimagining of the original song.

Finally Penguin Cafe seize Red Kite and create a live evolving landscape from the main melody. They gradually drop in the sample of Siegfried Sassoon and the lead vocals to create something deeply hypnotic – an epic and fitting closer to the album.”

The end result is an album that works as the perfect companion piece to the original, respectful without being reverential ‘Everyone Was A Bird – Remixed’ teases apart and highlighting the original tracks individual elements, opening up new vistas and providing us with a fresh perspectives of these songs.

The extraordinary debut album from percussionist and producer Sarathy Korwar – “Day To Day” – fuses traditional folk music of the Sidi community in India with jazz and electronics. It’s a collaborative release by Ninja Tune with The Steve Reid Foundation – a charitable trust established by Brownswood / Gilles Peterson with the dual objective of helping musicians in crisis and also supporting emerging talent. Sarathy is an alumnus of the Foundation’s development program, mentored by Four Tet, Emanative, Floating Points, Koreless and Gilles Peterson – all trustees of the foundation.

“Sarathy instantly caught my attention when he said he wanted to make an album that embraced both Indian folk music and jazz - two worlds that have had a big influence on me. His album succeeds in bringing these things together in an elegant way, but it’s his own style and ideas that come through the most in the music. Refreshingly different, this is a deep and powerful listening experience.”

The musical roots and routes of the Black Atlantic have been discussed and documented extensively, but Sarathy is highlighting a different dispersal of people in the other direction, from East Africa to India. The Sidis travelled to India from Africa as merchants, sailors, indentured servants and mercenaries from as far back as 628 AD and have settled in India ever since. Conceived on an extended trip to rural Gujarat, followed by sessions in Pune, Sarathy made field recordings of The Sidi Troupe of Ratanpur whose vocals and percussion form the backbone of “Day To Day”. 

Born in the US, Sarathy Korwar grew up in Ahmedabad and Chennai in India. Finishing his studies, Sarathy began to think about pursuing a career in music and moved to London, where he trained as a classical tabla player under the guidance of Sanju Sahai and graduated with a MMus in Performance from SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) focusing on the adaptation of Indian classical rhythmic material to non-Indian percussion instruments. 

Working the angles in London’s jazz scene, Sarathy connected with Shabaka Hutchings , Cara Stacey and played with clarinettist Arun Ghosh. He was, however, itching to create under his own name and he started formulating the concept for “Day To Day” and planning a trip to India to record the Sidis. It was late in 2014 when Sarathy heard about the Steve Reid Foundation. He applied and was accepted onto the project.
