Pilled Up on a Couple of Doves is the debut full-length by PDP III, who fell into alignment in December of 2018 amid a handful of immersive and improvisatory recording sessions held at Gary’s Electric Studio in Brooklyn, New York. The trio is a collaboration between composer/producer Britton Powell and two Berlin-based artists, the British composer/cellist Lucy Railton and the electronic artist Brian Leeds (Huerco S).

At the outset of these sessions Powell presented a series of compositional sketches anchored around multi-tracked electronics and acoustic percussion. These concepts were then used as the framework for collective improvisation, with the musicians working on instinct and layering as many as eight separate takes across a track. A portion of the record also reflects moments that are purely spontaneous – in-the-moment invention with Railton on electronics and cello and Powell and Leeds working on laptop computers.

The composition process involved little in the way of overt instruction, instead favoring discussion on more abstract notions of feel and energy. As a result, the final product was a bit surprising to all involved. “I don’t think the three of us had any idea how heavy and physical this thing was going to feel,” reflects Powell.

Subsequently reduced, edited, and collaged by Powell over the next two years, Pilled Up on a Couple of Doves presents a succession of alien moods. Gauzy textures are buoyed by extreme low end pressure. Serene industrial hum illuminates the rhythmic beating of waveforms. The sounds frequently evoke opposing emotions -- tenderness and anxiety, claustrophobia and transcendence.

The record culminates in 20-minute closer “49 Days,” where gradually unfurling textures for cello and electronics mirror the overtones of a ringing gong. It’s unsettling, but deeply meditative. A map of liminal space. Music to get lost to. “One thing that’s important in relation to my work with music is to access a place outside of physical space,” says Powell. “To pursue music as a tool to reach a place outside of physical existence.”

“There's something really simple, innocent, and timeless about working with acoustic percussion instruments,” explains Powell. “I think that they allow for a very true examination of sound. It feels vulnerable and really powerful at the same time.

Maral, an Iranian-American producer and DJ who lives in Los Angeles, was raised in the United States by parents with an extensive collection of Persian classical and pop music. For this mix, she reflects on the music that has helped her to foster an identity that goes “beyond being American or Iranian”—and to realize that an excessive attachment to nationality diminishes one’s ability to appreciate (and incorporate) whatever exceeds that category. To Maral, composing oneself, especially in the diaspora, means figuring out how to make sense of disparate experiences and forms of expression. In “Haal (حال)” she reconciles her Iranian heritage with the antifascist ideas that she discovered through bands like Crass and the inventive, disorienting work of musicians like Grouper, Burial, and Panda Bear.

Maral: Haal (حال)

We’ve reached book IV in Rupert Clervaux’s series of “Zibaldone” audio diaries, at which point we find him telling a different kind of story. 

“The first three all had very specific themes, while this one feels a little bit looser and doesn’t have just one thematic thrust,” he tells me, which maybe explains why listening feels a bit like annotating. I’m underlining, emphasizing, drawing arrows from here to there, highlighting symbols and noting motifs, realising, questioning, eureka-ing. An impressionistic meaning’s been encoded in and we’re lucky to be given the space to play that most poetic and boundless of all mental games: narrativization. 

There are no wrong answers, but Rupert offers some clues either way. If there’s any cipher here it’s “something like a meditation on the concept of ‘depth’––in all its connotative forms.” Think below the surface, (the) underground, yawning oceans, being ‘down in the dirt’, soil, roots, rootlessness, pulling at the dregs, collapse, profundity, stable and unstable horizons, distance, perspective, intuition, not to mention relative opposites: to be shallow, to be above, to be beyond. 

It’s got me thinking of Bresson’s “Bring things together that have as yet never been brought together and did not seem predisposed to be so.” His: “Dig deep where you are. Don't slip off elsewhere.” Rupert has realized these—two favourite goals of mine!—here. 

This is music that catches you at your own periphery, gives pause, has you offering a little “huh” to, asking “I wonder why” to. Again, it’s got me musing on another mindworm, this time from New York publisher and multi-sensory reading room Dispersed Holdings: “Feeling-making-knowing feedback loop; cartography of feeling; water as text, read to know the land beneath and around it, and body as reader.” 

Is it ok to offer up these other contexts out of context? I think so, because Zibaldone IV articulates a similarly swirly tone. Like, we’ve got Rebecca Solnit talking through Kropotkin’s “Mutual Aid” and later calling out to Michael Ruppert a ways away, and “Easy Rider” is playing in the wings. We’ve got Susan Sontag magically contextualizing Mariah Carey with poet Thylias Moss triangulating in order to sketch out (Rupert again) “something a little more interesting than wilful eclecticism or that laboured and patronising kind of pop-savvy.” 

Are we following? Whether yes or no Vanessa Bedoret follows on with a performance of a performance of Moss’s 'Water Road’: to be once or twice removed, via strange transitions, purposeful confusions, and, suddenly, seagulls. We’re on a boat with Ingeborg Bachmann—and how I wish I could actually be! But maybe thanks to this music I can as literature, films, friends, lethargy, coincidences, little mental links, eternal wormholes, lingering notions come together to imagine something better.

Toujours est-il qu’après avoir acheté quelques bières en quantité moyennement modérée, deux pizzas surgelées et des fraises tagada Camille, Peran et Paul se sont retrouvés un mardi soir au soundsystem de la course. Suite à l’établissement de leur campement, nos trois compères de Carpaccio cathédrale commencèrent à jouer autour du four, quelques heures de disques chinés, des enregistrements téléphoniques et quelques vidéos du web. Chemin faisant, ils furent rejoints par un mystérieux personnage à la moustache affûtée et la critique acérée qui permis à la pluie de Meteor de conserver son intensité. Le résultat de cette frasque reposera ici en attendant leurs prochaines aventures. To be continued...

Ambient Techno Tribute 1991-98

We're finally ready to unveil our latest sub-label in the shape of ambient, drone and experimental electronics offshoot Lobster Sleep Sequence.

After label head Jimmy Asquith came across Thet Liturgiske Owäsendet's immense ambient epic 'Catalina' on Soundcloud, it soon became a staple cure to a bout of recent prolonged sleeplessness and mild insomnia that he'd been unable to shake via any other means.

The decision to press on vinyl wasn't a light one - sitting at 46 minutes, Catalina had to be chopped and faded into two parts to make it remotely curable for vinyl - and having Rashad Becker at the helm of the mastering truly brought out the the textures, facets and finer details of this epic masterpiece.

It's a slow burning showcase of slowly evolving sonic substances and memories; a dense fog on a barren land steadily revealing the artefacts and objects hidden behind rocks and beneath the shadows; a static art piece hanging for months in a gallery rarely visited, allowed to decay into a beautiful immersive, solitary existence.

This release is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker in two parts, pressed onto heavy 180g wax with an LSS logo hand-stamped centre, encased in a black matte silver screen-printed sleeve, including a B&W matte A6 postcard insert.
