Sappho is a queer event producer and musical artist based out of Portland Oregon. Harkening back to the most famous woman artist of antiquity, Sappho’s namesake has a strong connection to femme empowerment. Much like the fabled name that she built her base upon, she has often been the lone femme on a line-up. With over 20 plus years of involvement in the dance community, she is a mentor to queer and femme artists in event production and the artform of djing. She has been changing the status quo, with her deep research, precise, almost librametric methods, branching into new forms and combinations that weave an intricate modern day poetry for a current generation of lost queer souls, freeing them, to dance, to love, to feel - the way only a perfect prose of poetry could elicit. This is Sappho, she is a DJ, a proud queer human, a patient guide, and a poet for the dance floor.

Artist Highlight 006: Sappho

Originally born and raised in Memphis TN, there was no shortage of musical influences for Gabriel Dellous. He grew up on an eclectic diet of funk, soul, and classic rock such as Booker T and the MG's, The Brothers Johnson and Jimi Hendrix, lovingly provided by his dads record collection. Inspired by his family's love of music, Gabriel took up the drums and guitar at the age of thirteen. It was only a couple years later that he discovered underground warehouse parties in Memphis. After attending his first warehouse party in 1994, he instantly knew he wanted to make people dance. 

Now a regular fixture of Portland's nightlife scene, Gabriel Dellous has shared the decks with well known DJs such as Dj Heather, Collette, Olivier Desmet, Wally Callerio, Mark Farina,Trevor Lamont, Doc Martin, Miguel Migs and Inland Knights to name a few. Lately, Gabriel has been honing in on his production style. Releases include tracks on Freaquewave Records, Mimosa Recordings, Planet East, Radda Records, Ficus Tree Music and other predominant house labels. He has also teamed up with Richie Staxx as the duo Easy Company, focusing on original productions, remix work, and future forward collaborations. Also performs live DJ performances with Bahb under the alias Street Kidz. 

With future bookings and production work, it looks like a busy year for Gabriel Dellous.

Since the launch in 2018, Local Heroes PDX has delivered multiple house and deep house events in Portland and established itself as an institution for Portland's House Music scene. House Music in Portland and on the west coast is experiencing a revival and Local Heroes PDX aims to accelerate and support that house music movement in Portland.

In 2021, during COVID, the house music scene in Portland has pushed the limits into raves, pop-up and outdoor events to create a save space for guests. IN 2021, Portland raves are the new standard and are popping up all over the city.
