Secret Tape, for us, is an exercise in capturing the sound of the two of us having fun. We aimed to record the spirit of this creative relationship, and remain entirely un-serious. Both of us are nostalgic for the atmosphere of early 90’s-2000’s underground music culture. Discovery on the musician’s side as well as listeners. Novelty and pure expression unencumbered by commercial aspiration.

We found this collection of songs all shared a distinct tone and emotional component, somewhat reminiscent of old polaroid photos. Those old snapshots capture the feeling of a moment, rather than a high fidelity but sterile image.

We kept this record simple and used primarily a computer and Ableton. Also, minimalism factored into the production ethos of this project. We are attempting to reject overproduction with the limited scope of tools and techniques often incorporated into modern music production.

The songs for Secret Tape Vol. 1 were recorded in Chicago & Los Angeles during 2021 & 2022
We mixed everything ourselves and shipped it all off to a personal friend and confidant, Lukas Turza at Snap Mastering.

90s skatepark mixtapes blasting, old boomboxes, basement parties, polaroid photos as well as 90’s era boom bap and grunge sonic aesthetics, as expressed with the precision of modern electronic music production.
