DJ Koze's 2013 album opus Amygdala has continued to bewitch all who encounter it since its release. Tipped as his own personal Sgt. Pepper, the sublime long-player revealed a fully-realised and personal body of work, complete with a classic songwriting at its core, House in its heart, and veins coursing with psychedelic color. La Duquesa' was the album's dreamy single standout, a journey into deep, tropical ecstasy. XTC' begins in the same spirit, and captures the all the blissful allusions of its name, but its initial gentility belies the deep intensity to come. Floating pads glow with celestial ambience as a kick drum is gradually coaxed into solid form, and the introduction of spoken text begins the second act. Many people are experimenting with the drug Ecstasy,' it says, ...is the drug like the lie and meditation the truth Or am I missing something that could really help me". XTC' then transforms: sweetly imploring tones become demanding, gentle gradients between chords turn hard-edged, and sharp hi-hats cut through the haze. Complete with Koze's signature percussive quirks, it drives towards the track's final pay off: an undeniable, all-consuming, irresistible high. Knee On Belly' recalls Koze at his most tongue-in-cheek and overt, it is bright, bold and literally brassy, using cut-up horns of all shapes and sizes to patchwork together his own unique arrangement. With the highs and mid ranges accounted for, Koze adds in a swollen, thrumming bass line to mix to bring this floor-filler to life. Knee on Belly' recalls a raw, filtered and funky approach to groove, with a nod to disco house and the art of artful sampling, as it orbits between its own neon highs and simmering lows.

Once for ‘Once’ was never going to be near enough! 

With his own ‘Pure Mix’ scaling sales charts, assailing radio playlists and grafting hard on floors for DJs including Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Aly & Fila and Markus Schulz, Solarstone opens up two new mix-fronts for ‘Once’.
Everyone’s favourite trucker-cap-wearing trance-master Alex M.O.R.P.H. has put his studio boxes into overdrive, bringing an even clubbier angle to the single. Solarstone’s ‘Once’ collaborators’ IKO have also taken the track back into the studio themselves, to work on a variation cast in their own inimitable, standout style.

The mighty Mr. M.O.R.P.H. wastes no time putting ‘Once’ above the rim, delivering a floor-delighting slam-dunk of a mix. DJ Mag scored it an impressive 8/10, noting the German producer “bookends (IKO vocalist) Kieran Scragg’s bittersweet refrains” with “panning sub-melodies, heavily delayed/effected harmonic piano and sprinting bass”. The mag concludes that with “touch-paper lit, it only takes some visceral 303 to set the whole mix off!”

IKO meanwhile bring ‘Once’ a complete stylistic ‘mix 180°’. Taking Kieran’s authentic, affecting, living, breathing vocals, they give it a downtempo, soundtrack-worthy modification. Building from slow-mo break-beats and meditative piano notes, they deliberately, brilliantly raise its drama through shuffling percussion, live instrumentation, filmic sequencing and, finally, divinely uplifting chords.

SoHaSo (Something Happening Somewhere), the label run by ormer Trouw resident Nuno dos Santos, is celebrating the summer with not one, but two compilations. Selecting unique pieces by artists known and unknown, the SOMEWHERE series feels like a sound-based confessional. Telling unheard stories, exposing unseen surfaces and unheard sounds.

SOMEWHERE I and II are set to be released digitally, a vinyl sampler with a selection of the tracks featured in the full compilations and as well as a very limited run of CD’s. Something is happening somewhere, once again.

The first release contains some true sonic pieces of art, by contributors that have erected the label's reputation in the first place: Love Over Entropy, Presk, Sigward and of course Nuno Dos Santos himself.

Notes :
I recorded this small track in one take on a sunny afternoon in early august, playing on my Fender Rhodes with a tape echo effect and a bowed acoustic guitar. This was originally thought as a musical dress for a short fiction film directed by my friend Jonathan Desoindre. This free version is an extended edit.
