Deep Session Dub Club, Part 2

I'm happy to finally release my first extended set with you, recorded at StereoBar in Montreal. StereoBar is a club that's quickly jumped onto my shortlist of favorite venues in the world. Beyond the nailing the club fundamentals (sound system, layout, lighting, staff), they feature the "All Night" series where one DJ plays as opener, headliner, and closer. I love this format since it gives me the opportunity to build the energy from scratch and take the night in any direction without constraints.

But more importantly, I get to play for one of the most enthusiastic, supportive crowds that I've ever encountered. The energy from this night was the strongest I've felt in quite some time, certainly my best gig of the last year. Almost everything I threw out there worked, which actually makes me think that I might not have worked hard enough. There are many more sonic landscapes I'd love to explore, so hopefully I can come back again soon and we can take another journey in that special room...

Next month we're opening a store in Cologne, which just so happens to be the hometown of our guest DJ, Marcus Worgull (@marcusworgull). It's safe to say that Worgull's work is very diverse: it ranges from the deepest house-cuts on Berlin's famous Innervisions label, to synth-heavy ambient productions as 'Vermont' (Marcus Worgull + Motor City Drum Ensemble). Oh, and let's not forget his brilliant remixes for The XX and Fink.

This guest mix features a selection of beautiful, melancholic tracks, put together in a story telling way.

Dj Tennis is Manfredi Romano, born in 1970 and raised between New Jersey, Sicily and Parma in a family where music was such a small thing. No relatives playing any musical instruments, nothing to play at home, no one giving music any special amount of love. But despite this, his creative and artistic attitude have always centered around music - singing, playing and collecting weird and noisy musical instruments at every turn. In 1989 while studying computer science at the Pisa university (just to please his grandfather) he was already playing and singing in school bands and had an indie rock radio show on a local radio station in Palermo. 

Recording bands, organizing parties and DJ'ing at the tennis club where he used to play as a semi-pro player (the Tennis moniker comes from his passion for that sport) all became his way to support the costs of his studies. But when he graduated he never imagined he would turn that hobby into his career. Still he became a DJ anyway, while focusing first on promoting new underground music in his country and founding and developing some of the most important Italian underground musical events such as the Elita festival in Milan and the Dissonanze festival in Rome.

During the last 2 decades he started producing music for theatre, movie soundtracks and TV commercials. His production skills always take inspiration from the psychedelic dark and melancholic sounds of the 60s straight thru to early 2000’s IDM. To name a few influences: Beach Boys, The Who, Talk Talk, Ultravox, XTC, Fugazi, June of 44, Suicide, Radiohead, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Plastikman.

In 2010, tired of the output of the actual musical scene he decided to collect all of his musical works and, with Thugfucker’s Greg Oreck, to start a new techno and pop label called Life and Death. The name of the label has a specific meaning, inspired by the socratic maieutic process to turn subtle and “dead” elements into a new life and referring to the benefit and hypnotic power of music used in the mesmeric processes for brain therapy.

Tennis is actually based in Berlin where he also shares the label experience and a studio with Tale of Us. And he has worked hard to create a crew of young and inspired musicians like Clockwork, Esperanza among others.

//What do you love about Yamba?
Oh, there is a lot I love for it. I love the family spirit that’s behind it, its design, the quality of the food and the drinks and its musical orientation. Musically I am more the timeless side myself and I like it when people the guts to not run chasing every trend.

//What was your idea when your played this set at Yamba. recently?
Obviously there was no dancing allowed, so I played a lounger set that was supposed to simply create the perfect ethereal and floating soundscape for the beautiful day at the beach. I knew that Disco and soulfulness are strong elements of the music choice usually and that’s what I’m coming from so wherever it’s welcome I play a set like this. 

//What’s your ritual before a gig?
If you wanna call it a ritual. I always do the following: whenever I come into a venue, a room, I try to feel it. Sometimes that takes only a few minutes, sometimes more. I am trying to intuitively feel into what this room needs to take off. Sometimes this can mean to reset a room at 10bpm lower from the first records to slowly rise the energy again, sometimes it’s continuing exactly there where it is at this very moment and transforming it later. I am also feeling into the question if the room is ready at all for these types of stories I like to tell and sometimes, not often, the answer is a no. And then I just play a set that’s more on the functional side because in the end it’s my job to make the people dance.
