Tam Morris about writing Heavenly Ho in late 2010:

In 2003 my former band Tracky Dax played regularly at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi, Australia. DJ Andy Glitre informed us that he was putting together a compilation of all the acts that played there. A few months later I received my copy which had some killer tracks including a track called "In My Bed" by some singer called Amy Winehouse. I can remember thinking that I wished I had seen her play at the beach road because she sounded like a real talent.

Years later I heard Back To Black and was totally blown away by the nostalgic super soul coming from the speakers. I didn't make the link between that Amy Winehouse and the artist on the Bondi Calling compilation for another year or so. Amy was huge by then and I was so stoked to be in her esteemed company by default on the Bondi Calling album. Of course Amy had never played at the Beach Road Hotel. Andy had put together a mix of artists both local and international who fit the chilled out vibe of the album.

As the years rolled on I became more and more enamoured with Back to Black. I found it hard to reconcile the timeless strength in Amy's vocals and the loose-canon fragility which she played out in her increasingly public life. The snapshot moment for me was Amy's appearance on the UK comedy music show, Never Mind The Buzzcocks. Amy was unwieldy and staggering one second and then super sharp and comedic the next. At one point the host Simon Amstell announced that the show was no longer a gameshow but an intervention. Like so many moments in Amy's life there was pathos and humour in equal measure. It stayed with me.

When it came to the writing of Heavenly Ho It was the anthemic beauty of To Sir With Love that I most wanted to capture. Then as I began I realised I was writing something that sat in the same universe as the songs on Amy's album. I thought of all the tragic divas who had been seduced and discarded in one way or another by the slippery slope of fame. Janis, Amy, Dusty, Billy the list goes on. I imagined a fictional character, a talented singer who is plucked from a rough life below the poverty line to an even rougher one above it. I remembered a line from Lee Scratch Perry about how Bob Marley had been a stand up guy but then he ran with the bad dogs. I pilfered the line. When it came to the chorus the words just came ... Heavenly Ho. To me it was Amy. A tragic mix of opposite forces in equal measure.

I'm not a fan of corporations. At their worst they use the veil of legitimate business to destroy people's lives. And there is never an individual to hold accountable. It was this idea that flavoured the next verse which sees the main character seduced and remade by a big corporation which sends her life spinning out of control. The line from buzz cocks came back to me. Then it was the image of Amy's father, always so public with his pain, that lead me to the next chorus.

I've seen my share of famous people. Fame is a disease. It strips people of any grounding. Fame can cast very smart people into an exile of ego. They become addicted to sycophants and wary of anyone who hints at the truth of their fundamental human ordinariness. It all boils down to a quest for immortality and an exaggerated fear of being forgotten. But to be remembered you must do something extraordinary. You must go to extremes. Something has to give. I guess in the end Heavenly Ho was prophetic. But it wasn't a hard prediction to make.

I wish we could have heard more of Amy's beautiful living pain. All we have now are scattered memories, paparazzi images and some seriously beautiful music.

Hermitude - Speak Of The Devil (Lo Five's F.U.N.K.box refix)

Spanning diverse styles and flavours, this mixtape serves both as an introduction to <a href="https://soundcloud.com/piri-aka-trackwrecker">Piri aka Trackwrecker</a>, and also serves to illustrate the depth of quality local production, with tunes from some of the many, many talented producers that call Australia and New Zealand home. Putting to good use his time managing the Beats section for local music website <a href="theorangepress.net">theorangepress.net</a>, and his decade of experience DJing in a variety of environs, Trackwrecker has compiled a highlights package of some of his favourite locally produced beats. It features material mostly produced in the past year or so, along with a smattering of his favourite recent international productions. The scary thing is, this barely scratches the surface, with many more equally talented local artists missing the cut, simply because they didn't fit. 2 hours is clearly not enough!

The mixtape itself was developed on turntables and cdjs, but the final edit was sequenced within Ableton, to allow for maximum listening pleasure, with perfectly key matched tunes, flowing effortlessly through the different moods. At times dreamy and cerebral, other times energetic and punchy, it encompasses the full gamut, from ambient interludes, through bass heavy head-nodders, to full blooded floor fillers, all broadly able to be defined as High Grade Downtempo Smokers, or just plain Beats, with a smattering of choice accapellas, to help the medicine go down.
