Week 4  is taken from Sounds of a New Father, the new album by Olan Mill.

After the recent album on Unknown Tone Records, Olan Mill returns to Shimmering Moods Records. There is no doubt that the birth of a child is the most incredible, wonderous, and, frankly, miraculous event to be a part of. It’s the climax of the most complex and awe-inspiring biological processes, the most radical change the human body can go through and the most utterly emotionally over-whelming event possible. No wonder everyone involved is knocked for six....“The music was recorded in the moments after baby Alma had gone to sleep. All tracks were recorded using electric guitar and effect pedals. This album was conceived in Moscow during the Spring of 2018, when Dmitry Vasilyev organized the concert of Enrico Coniglio and Giulio Aldinucci at дом - Dom Cultural Centre. The album reflects the feelings of some very intensive days made of exchanges of ideas with a multitude of people involved in music (including Dmitry Taldykin of Dronarivm) and moments spent in isolated places out of the metropolis, like a forest not far from an army shooting range.

In this album, the two musicians wave together memories of an immutable past and questions about the present, giving birth to a sort of a requiem overflowing with lyricism. This music enlighten the dawn of a future that now appears more uncertain than ever, with frozen intensity and dramatic strength. As a message entrusted to the stars, it leaves as wondering if we can still change the course of events.

2020 plays out to the sound of "Ghost Sounds" by Polaroid Notes, who returns to the British label Whitelabrecs following 2017’s ‘Unsung Memories’.

"Ghost Sounds" treads the cinematic lines of atmospheric piano and electronic ambient music, with unsettling undercurrents which occasionally creep into view. It has been in production since November 2019 as the sound of Polaroid Notes was pushed to develop a wider variety. The recording methods, effects and techniques were painstakingly adapted through experimentation and some truly spooky moments were captured. From here, "Ghost Sounds" became an obvious working title for the album.

The basic approach behind Polaroid Notes album is an attempt to deal with our weird and uncertain times in politics, health, social separation, isolation and cocooning. "Ghost Sounds" tries to capture this strange atmosphere - somewhere between deep despair, silent hope and the wish to wake up from restless and unfullfillable dreams.

The album artwork features photographs by Polaroid Notes shot during heavy snowfall in the first few winter days of 2020 in the Black Forest.

The fictitious tour of far-away lands continues, as anonymous artist Glåsbird follows the scratchy, folk-ambience of Norskfjǫrðr with a return to lonely arctic-island sounds. Novaya Zemlya is a Russian-owned island, stretching from just off the mainland between the Kara and Barents seas, with two islands split by the Matochkin Strait.

The Southern island Yuzhny is the home of a few inhabitants whereas the Northern counterpart Severny is pretty much all glacier. The added complication of sea-ice during Arctic winters have made certain parts of this land very difficult to navigate. There are accounts stretching back to the 16th century when explorer Willem Barentsz died on an expedition and his body is rumoured to have been buried on Severny.
Into more recent times, Novaya Zemlya has been a sensitive military area throughout the cold war as well as a nuclear testing site. In 1961 the world's most powerful nuclear weapon was detonated, the 'Tsar Bomba'.

In this album, Glåsbird composes a soundtrack which transcends the years of history, combining themes of explorers and Barentsz's tragic demise, isolation, climate change and polar bears, underpinned by radio broadcasts to give a slightly unsettling undercurrent, hinting back to the cold war. The track Vanya is named after a code name the Russians had for the Tsar Bomba detonation project and this piece sits at the centre of this album, in some of the most dramatic soundtrack work this artist has made to date.

The cover artwork and bonus images within the CD packaging were taken by photographer Uliana Prokhorova, who visited a few locations on the island. As always, this album uses the sounds, photography and track titles to build an imaginary soundtrack in your mind as you listen and immerse yourself in this latest sonic exploration.
