After releasing an EP, "Angeltribe" on London label TT in 2020, and "Vorphic Skin" on Toothgrinder Press in 2023, Kat Nzingha's debut album "Grind" will be released on AngeltribeXTL in May of 2023. Based in Philadelphia, Kat Nzingha is a multidisciplinary artist that explores experimentations with abstruse textures. By combining their sculptural works with heavy low-end frequencies and celebratory tones they create blissfully cryptic sonic materials that are the extended bodies of modified objects of which they consistently fabricate. "Grind" conjures the spirit of the sculptural entity that is physically attached to Nzingha's body as seen on the album art. The sculpted spirit is manifested through the sonic form of convulsing kicks, metallic percussion, and hyper-processed textures.

A piece commissioned by ROH Projects, Jakarta for the "Split Body" Exhibition by Virginnie Ittah & Kai Yoda (Ittah Yoda), 5 June - 20 July.

The goal is to create a piece based on the duelling vibes/atmospheres of both artists. 
Virginnie Ittah's piece is lighter and airier, while Kai Yoda's piece is darker, more percussive. 
Ittah's piece occupies the left channel, while Yoda's piece occupies the right.
Both pieces are played simultaneously during the exhibition, with variations, spanning 35 minutes each.

The resulting track you hear is both pieces combined together as one track, as I originally made it to be. It features the initial bodies of both pieces, which span only 5 minutes each, which I later expanded as required.

I would like to thank both Virginnie and Kai, as well as ROH Projects, for the opportunity to work with them and provide the sounds to their beautiful artworks. Special thanks also to Mahamboro, who mastered the track, and to the XHABARABOT Ambiex machine that I partially used for the composition.

"SPLIT BODY" Exhibition Description:

ROH is pleased to present Split Body, the gallery’s first solo exhibition of artist duo Ittah Yoda — Virginie Ittah (b. 1984, Paris) and Kai Yoda (b. 1985, Tokyo). Since meeting at the Royal College of Art in London, the artists have developed a collaborative practice grounded in virtual world-building and nomadic material research, creating multi-sensorial environments that unfold across media.

The exhibition features a new body of work spanning painting, sculpture, virtual reality, sound, and scent—inviting viewers into an interplay of the five senses. In Split Body, Ittah Yoda interrogate the boundaries of the body and its potential multiplicities—across physical, spiritual, and technological realms. Their collaborative process blurs individual authorship, merging multicultural perspectives into a shared artistic language, while maintaining distinct agency.

The concept of a “split” or rupture runs throughout: painting becomes a psychic terrain; virtual reality conjures disembodied sensations; scent activates affect and memory. Guided by the notion of the Symbiocene—an era of balanced coexistence between human and non-human forms—the exhibition imagines hybrid embodiments that defy binaries of natural/digital, real/unreal, and human/non-human.

Developed through two residencies with ROH—at DESA, Ubud (2024) and Rumah Tangga, Depok(2025)—Split Body folds together “genetic-artistic” material from Indonesia, Greece, and France into an evolving ecosystem. Through an accumulative journey of cultural and material gathering, the exhibition proposes forms of being that are yet to come.

estoc presents the newest manifestation of her artistic practice: an attempt to make sense of a world seemingly hellbent on violence as its chief export. Art written as a direct response to the conditions felt both at home and watched across oceans through a phone. This album exists as an acknowledgement that our fates are inextricably intertwined, yet, our (temporary) comfort is extracted from the third world. Across 10 tracks the question is: Are We Doomed to Bow to the Stupid and Cruel? Answers are posed and then brushed away, like dust from a shelf. By the end, nothing is settled and we are left with more questions than answers.

Collaborators and co-conspirators weave in and out of the compositions, their presence felt as both adornment, and as integral infrastructure. DJ Haram opens the album with ‘Heretic’. Her voice swims through crackling noise, throbbing basslines — a guided meditation as much as a late night conversation. ‘The Weight’ follows directly after. AZADI.mp3’s smoky chants hover in the air above a smouldering fire of trip hop drums and synths, devolving to a miasma of distortion and swirling screams. The next song, ‘Where Do We Go Now’, builds and swells with rumbling synths, arriving fully as breaks crash forward and Military Scientist’s voice cries out over a chaotic sea. The first solo composition of the album comes in the form of ‘The Poison of the Centre’. A solemn yet off-balance meditation of drums, cut over an uneven and shifting beat. This rhythmic fervor is multiplied tenfold on ‘No Glory’, a harsh bath of bass and drums, constantly fighting for space to breathe through the manufactured scarcity of the mix.

‘Scorched Earth’ lends us our first breath of fresh air. Mia Carucci sings a lullaby over growling instrumentation, Exploited Body’s co-production threatening to boil over at any moment. A momentary break in the clouds, a beam of sunlight shines through before being quickly swallowed back up by the storm; gone as quickly as it came. It is here that we plunge even deeper, as the heartbeat of ‘Heaven Defined for Another’ rattles through. Machinery and exasperated breathing become inexorable, both driven to their breaking point by a rolling wave of thunder. This mechanical terror roils forth on ‘Cradling’. Miedo Total sets clattering steam and cogs over crying strings that threaten to throw themselves to pieces. The penultimate entry sees Violence lend voice and production to ‘Bones Broken, Many Things Left Unsaid’ — a deep terror lurches, shuddering and crashing like ocean waves. A gentle chorus of strings ushers in the final piece, ‘Scratch a Liberal’ — a rare, but fleeting moment of tenderness on the album. Heavy towers of bass throw the composition into shadow, tension builds and grows before collapsing in on itself, revealing the fear and violence at the core of this project. At the end of it all, we are left alone to contemplate what is to be done.
