A propos de JOE : About Joe : The story of the song...

JOE est une chanson que j’ai écrite (Benjamin) à l’époque de mon premier Rock band, MISTRAL. Nous l’avons reprise avec MÉNAGE À TROIS, puis je l’ai jouée sur scène avec BenJ & The BIN’S, et bien d’autres de mes diverses formations...Je l’ai enregistrée sur mon album solo « COMME » (version synthétique) et la voilà à nouveau sur SOMBRES ILLUMINÉS de Groupe de NouX ! (toutes ces versions et leurs vidéos sont à votre disposition sur soundcloud.com/noux-blaplace)

Pourquoi ? ??

Outre que ce soit paraît-il une bonne chanson, elle est aussi hélas le symbole d’une perte chère et d’une époque particulière... Elle s’intitule JOE mais aurait dû ou pu s’appeler OLIVIER. Un quasi-membre du groupe à qui l’on doit la pochette du single UNISEX de MISTRAL. Graphiste de talent voué à une belle carrière, Olivier a succombé à une overdose d’héroïne un jour d’hiver gris Paris qui pointait vers un printemps qu’il ne verrait jamais. En mémoire et en symbole, je joue toujours ce titre, pour me souvenir de lui, alors que cela aurait pu être moi, le chanteur, le bassiste ou notre chanteuse qui était sa Chérie... à Vie. Son cœur s’est brisé et le lendemain de son décès, nous partions (Mistral) sombres, jouer et enregistrer à Amsterdam. The show must go on ! 😢Ça nous a pris bien trop longtemps pour arrêter ce que nous appellerons bientôt le « COOCOO POISON »le poison fou). Titre phare de Mà 3.

Numb! Dead on the inside. Body parts disconnected like pieces of a puzzle, scattered. The tension between the unencumbered, limitless freedom offered by the digital domain and a myriad limitations placed on the body. Awake, the new single from art-pop outfit Eutropic, transposes the idea of the zombie –  the walking dead – to our current state as a society. It also offers a glimpse into what it would feel like to come back to life, fully! 

A pessimist might call it an escapist fantasy or just wishful thinking, a mere daydream. An optimist might see it as a spell, a call to arms or a beautiful sonic fiction to live through vicariously. Whatever your predisposition might be, the fact that the song feels like a wild reawakening, a resuscitation, a full reset –  that is indisputable. It’s hardwired into the relentless, tight, throbbing groove, the vitality of the chunky bass and the effervescent keys and guitars. Listening to this is like being transported from a murky, life-less netherworld into the pulsating, chromatic vitality of life at large. Note: psychedelic lenses (technology) are not included in the package, but recommended.

Despite the obvious overlaps with  our current circumstances, the song was written and recorded pre-pandemic. Awake is the first single from the forthcoming LP Dark Age Day Dream due to drop this autumn.

Since 1998 we have been working with Boo Boo Davis in Europe at least  2 or 3 times each year since 1998. Usually, we also wrote and recorded a lot of new music during these tours. At first Covid-19 meant a complete stop to all this. But the music couldn't be stopped, and we started to exchange musical ideas and send them back and forth between the Netherlands and East St Louis (where Boo Boo is living).  So, despite the fact that we cannot be at the same spot right now we are still able to create new music together. This single is the first result of that, and we are working on a lot more songs. Stay tuned.
