 In “Pocualeíto” (an anagram for “eucalipto”) , “Suso”, as he is affectively known, fuses his extensive practice in Afro-Latin percussion with a penchant for cinematic strings that oscillate between eerily quiet and fractally intense. An electronic music artist that resorts to his mouse only when strictly necessary, Susobrino crafts his ‘soundtrack music’ -referring to the soundtrack of life itself- by executing a wide variety of instruments. In Pocualeíto, Suso fills- or rather creates the spaces of his groundbreaking productions with enigmatic instruments such as Guitalele, Zampoña, Quenacho and Tbilat. Partly a debt to his Bolivian heritage but mainly the result of a continuous quest to grasp the complexity of African rhythms, Susobrino pinpoints the sources of his music inspiration not to a specific country but rather to the Afrolatin experience as a whole.
Structurally, each track in Pocualeíto poses a challenge to the rigidness of the 4-to-the-floor grid defaults of digital audio workstations and opts for harvesting its rewards instead from unconventional time-signatures and tempo shifts- evidenced at best in “Jill/Tio” Carbón, a 2-for-1 piece that begins with an oddly emphasised 4/4 clap pattern and later disintegrates into a pitched-down Mexican Cumbia.
Musically the album takes us on a tour through imagined landscapes of Andean futurism in search for a common African past. In El Aguante, a heavenly synthetic choir paves the way for a snare-oriented percussion line reminiscent of Bolivian “carnaval” festivities. In “Wasos” featuring the collaboration of Dengue Dengue Dengue, a worn-out guitar appears to eject vocal lamentations from time to time in a staccato manner and here again the percussion takes us to a strange triangle between Peru, Bolivia and West Africa.
It is hard to summarise Susobrino’s music in words, for no words have been yet invented to describe the groundbreaking work we hear in “Pocualeíto”, an unequivocal sign that Kebrada records is set to continue writing contemporary music history with each release.

It's volume TWO of the Nice Work series, and here we are again with a grab bag of tracks for the DJs, casual listeners, sportos, motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, and dickheads.

Continuing in the spirit of the Nice Work series by giving journalistic snapshots of my daily musical practice, these tracks span all the way back to 2020 up to just about a month ago. After roaming and combing through hundreds of projects, I landed on this bouquet of tracks tied with a string of organic, cerebral, and arboreal motifs.

From Kongobongo's loopy chants and Sorry I Missed Your Call's dastardly bassline funk to the wistful pianos and strings of One for Me and Destination, there's something for the whole family. Jam these dancefloor-tested tracks in the club or on headphones, here at Nice Work Industries™ we say, "Why not both?"

‘Inner Hue’ is the debut full-length release from Non Projects founder and 2011 Red Bull Music Academy alum Brian Allen Simon.
 
While sharing similar stripped down recording approaches to the companion ‘Acquiescence’ EP, the music of ‘Inner Hue’ is an entirely different journey. With ‘Acquiescence’, the source material of grand piano and tenor saxophone remain fairly transparent, letting the instruments themselves tell the story, but with ‘Inner Hue’ Brian goes far deeper inside of the notes and takes the instrumentation of Rhodes piano and tenor saxophone into entirely new territories, coaxing nuanced textures and sounds with personal vocabulary unique to each track. An album that moves with sonic intent and abstract narrative, ‘Inner Hue’ naturally demands listening from start to finish, always revealing new paths with each play. This is personal, patient and thoughtful music to live inside of, or rather the music that lives inside of us, aching to get out.

Throughout ‘Inner Hue’, the sound of electric piano timbres remain prevalent - raw, elegant and crystallized into time, lucid tone colors embossed onto a tangible spectral audio field. Seductive and ruminating melodies run rampant, in shifting counterpoint with luxuriant, ageless textures, always with a corporeal melodic yearning. Sometimes physical and upfront, as when the saxophones roar over sturdy, cracking drums in “Murmurs” and layers of Rhodes build and amalgamate with double time percussive syncopations on the title track, or patiently ebbing and flowing through space on tracks like “Embers” and opener “Eighty-Four,” the timeless music of ‘Inner Hue’ is communicated with a unique and individualized finesse so rarely heard these days. A testament to Brian’s both formal and informal studies of composition over many years, ‘Inner Hue’ advances with a unique cinematic tension in the most organic of ways, coming to a harmonious close with “Entwine”, a highly visual piece of lullaby like high notes, raw bass tones, studied counterpoint and delicate ambience. An artist obsessed with building his own voice, no matter what palate he chooses, Anenon’s ‘Inner Hue’ truly marks only the beginning of a long and idiosyncratic life of music ahead.

It's this experience of being at an age when you're really uncertain of everything and overwhelmed by how much grief and how much horror is happening in this world, overwhelmed by your trauma and your baggage and in many ways you are stunted by this fear or paralysed by it even though you are aware of how much better you have it than the vast majority of others out there. It isolates the idea that we all exist within a framework of fragility and uncertainty. 'Distilled Existence' imagines an alternative reality that exists in stark contrast, where everything is gentle and nothing hurts. This track is by Pulsum. Spoken word poem written and delivered by Ariana Molly.
