Program note:

"Land" began as a compositional challenge to myself.  Many of my preceding pieces feature brief, eclectic movements, and I was curious to see what would happen if I consciously endeavored to write a piece that unfolded more gradually.  I chose to explore this idea by writing in a very slow, harmonically driven texture. 

I was greatly inspired by the third movement of Arnold Schoenberg’s "Five Pieces for Orchestra", titled “Farben”, or “Summer Morning by the Lake”.  Being almost entirely derived from a single chord, “Farben” served almost as an ideal for what I was trying to achieve.  Though I wasn’t quite able to restrict myself to one chord in writing "Land", I did find a chord that, to me, seemed suitable to function as the structural foundation of the piece. The work’s title, "Land", comes from this chord’s final and most emphatic manifestation, which occurs toward the end of the piece.  Following this arrival, all the pitch content is derivative of this chord.  Consequently, the piece has finally grounded itself.
