For the next Pair Test, the students began strategy meetings at their desks. The theme was “Let’s think of inventions to support future life.”

As soon as Haruto looked at the theme, he lightly tapped Kanon’s shoulder.
“This is the most exciting theme we’ve ever had, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. But the bar is high. This time we have to make the best thing ever.”

“The best thing, huh… Alright, let’s do it!”

“Everyone will probably choose robots or AI. I want us to add a twist that feels like us.”
“A twist… Oh! Future life shouldn’t just be about convenience. It should be something that makes people smile more.”

Kanon’s eyes lit up at those words.
“Smiles… That’s it! An invention that helps people and makes them happy would be wonderful.”

The two spent their after-school hours and weekends brainstorming ideas and began building a prototype. Their idea was “The Future Chair that Spreads Smiles.”

“This chair moves according to the person’s mood when they sit down!” Haruto explained excitedly. “For example, if you’re feeling down, gentle music will play and the backrest will massage you. On the other hand, if you’re energetic, it will sway lightly to the rhythm.”

Kanon added, “And this chair also shares the mood with people around. A screen attached to the backrest shows kind illustrations or messages that express the sitter’s feelings.”

Using household materials and tools from the school workshop, they built a prototype. They attached a screen to the backrest that displayed random cute illustrations when someone sat down, and installed speakers to play melodies.

On the day of the Pair Test

“We created the Future Chair that Spreads Smiles!”
“This chair moves and plays sounds according to the sitter’s mood. It also conveys their feelings to those around them.”

Haruto sat down to demonstrate. The screen displayed the message “You’re doing great today!” along with a cute cat illustration. At the same time, a soft melody played.

“Wow…!” voices of amazement rose throughout the classroom.

Kanon smiled and said, “This chair was made not only to comfort the person sitting in it, but also to bring smiles to those around them.”

As the two stood in front of the chair, the classroom erupted in applause.

Under the evening sky, Haruto said, “Hey, isn’t this our greatest masterpiece?”
Kanon chuckled and shook her head. “It went well, but a greatest masterpiece is something we can keep updating, don’t you think?”

“I see… Then next time, let’s make something even greater together.”
