Up for the 27th installment in our mix series is dear friend and colleague Kennedy (@kennedyams) who's a keen member of the MFM crew and recently started his own label Dream Machine. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hey Nick seemed like a good time to finally get you to introduce yourself and join our mix series since you’ve been helping with MFM a while now. Can you let everyone know a bit more about yourself?

K: Hey hey. Thanks for the opportunity :) So, I live in Amsterdam where my life is (and always has been) centered around music. I've been helping out at MFM for some years now and besides that I have my studio that I religiously visit 3 days a week. In a normal world you'd also find me working at Red Light Records once a week and playing shows on the weekends where they'd have me.

MFM: You’re also working on your own productions, can you tell us a little more about your own music?

K: So it had always been a dream to release my own music on vinyl and after messing around for over 10 years the time felt right and I recently realized my own label Dream Machine. Both musically as aesthetically the idea was for each release to reflect a dream but in tangible form. As I tried to put it into words it is “A series of thoughts, sensations and sounds occurring from a person's mind, translated by machines”, and it really is just that. 

MFM: How has the situation affected your productivity with making dance music?

K: A bit double to be honest. Of course I've had my rough times, which can be frustrating. Quite often I wasn't feeling motivated or inspired at all, the purpose felt a bit misplaced or something like that... On the other hand and above all I felt relatively lucky to be able to go leave the house and get lost in the studio. Having the luxury to escape to a creative environment surely helped keeping calm. Eventually it did result in Dream 1 being released and with Dream 2 coming up.

MFM: What would you say does inspire your music? Is it very process based through jamming and so on or do you start with ideas and try and see where that takes you?

K: For me inspiration goes hand in hand with motivation, it's all very much based on how I feel. I don't work well at night for example, daylight is my natural battery. And anything can be a source of inspiration really. Often an idea comes to mind when walking through the park on my way to the studio, listening to music or just wandering off. A melody, a chord, something rhythmical, a vibe... Depending on what idea it brings I choose an instrument or tool and go from there. Mostly through jamming yes, and then see where the machines take me. 

MFM: What would be some ways you would like to see the world of dance music evolve and grow now we’ve all had a moment to pause and reflect?

K: I actually would rather see it all take a couple steps back first. It would be nice if (dance) music gets acknowledged and valued as an essential form of art more. Music really unites and it needs proper breeding grounds for people, free from any social, economical, racial or whatever context to express, connect, create, collaborate, learn, etc. It's essential, and it should be treated and used as such (not in the last place also by governments), with more care, necessity and sustainability. 

MFM: Tell us more about the mix and what vibe you were trying to bring here?

K: I sort of tried to reflect my perception of this recent change in life. As a big fan of Lonnie Liston Smith (and The Cosmic Echoes) the song 'Visions Of A New World' first came to mind and I just took it from there. If you're in for an atmospheric laid back magic carpet ride with lots of percussion, spiritual jazz, ambient techno and forest sounds, this is for you :)

If you were to think say that Flamingo Pier have become stalwarts of Soundway Records as of late, then you would be absolutely correct. The New Zealand based collective of Dominic, Brad and Luke have developed a blossoming relationship with the label  since the release of their self titled ‘Flamingo EP’ back in 2019. Fast-forward 2 years; having navigated through the midst of a global pandemic, the trio are now set to release their debut album ‘Flamingo Pier LP’. This long-play encapsulates the unique sound that the trio have established over the past few years that has come to incorporate elements of funk, disco, and jazz, all built around Afro-centric percussive elements.



Deeper Soul is somewhat of a departure from the upfront, cut-loose dancefloor vibe that harnesses the majority of this album. Staying true to its name; ‘Deeper Soul’ has its foundations in a substantially more downtempo, stripped back approach. It’s psychedelic influence hides in plain sight, organic afro-inspired percussion underpinning the calming synth top-lines that gently meander throughout courtesy of an abundance of reverb, delay, and modulation; whilst the hypnotic, funk-laden baseline injects a feeling of nostalgia that supplements the overall groove in beautiful fashion. It’s hard to pull yourself out of the time-warp of yesteryear after listening to this one!

London’s Customs duo are connoisseurs of finely crafted garage music, two life long devotees to the sound’s deeply swung rhythms and unifying dancefloor vibrations.

Finessing their take on all things garage (not garage) through their regular spots on Kiosk Radio and at London's Giant Steps, the guys join us with a swinging smorgasbord of 90s and early 00s records from the UK, dabbling in top notch garage and some of the sounds that anticipated broken beat and early grime productions.

Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when combining for this mix, and what kind of setting might you imagine it being enjoyed in the most?

Guy: 

Firstly, thank you Myles so much for sharing this mix. Longtime fans of MDC! Both of us answered “driving” as the best setting, which is funny since neither of us drives. So maybe “riding” rather than driving. Lots of thoughts percolated for me on night drives to inner city Manchester a few months back. Definitely inspired by the All Bad Boy & All Good Girl archive work of Death Is Not The End, resurfacing the sound of Moss Side blues parties like Soul Control. Reading Ed Gillett’s new-ish book Party Lines also gave a push further into alternate UK dance histories, specifically Black club scenes and music that ‘swings’.

Tom: 

I’ve been bingeing on a bunch of old club recordings from the ‘speed garage’ era lately - sets from places like Club Koo and The Colosseum - and I think some of the energy from that early blend of UK and US sounds has definitely bubbled over into this mix.

Q. With the mix showcasing your shared appreciation for deep garage music and its many adjacent styles and offshoots, could you give us a brief insight into your journeys with the sound, and what years, artists or labels have you found to be responsible for the most timeless cuts in your record bags?

Guy: 

It was a nocturnal radio sound for me as a young teenager I guess, largely mysterious, coming largely from London when I was growing up in the north west. But the sampling of R&B vocals from stuff I knew made it immediately accessible. In more recent years, digging in London, I’ve tended to get most excited by either one-off/ white label riddles that are sometimes garage-not-garage, and also alias stuff from bigger name producers across bigger labels in the genre - G-Spot Records, Nice ‘N’ Ripe, Unda-Vybe etc. 

Tom:

I actually started out as a bedroom garage DJ, so it’s a bit of a full-circle moment for me. I had a mate at school who wanted to be an MC, and on Saturdays we used to hit up Music & Video Exchange to pick up whatever white labels we could find before heading back to his flat in Ladbroke Grove to practice a set that nobody would ever hear. Shout out to Nick The Greek, wherever you are! Twenty-something years later, I’m still finding exciting stuff from the same producers we loved back then - guys like Jeremy Sylvester and Mike Millrain who have these unfathomably deep back-catalogues.

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your hearts, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much?

Guy: 

I’d call out 2. Artist Formerly Known as PP - When I’m Down, from 1998. Bit of a private press oddity from a producer who’s prolific but mysterious (the PP = ‘Persian Prince’). It’s a kind of rolling, morphing megamix type cut that samples Brandy - Best Friend but also features raw toasting style MC bits the likes of which you hear from the live party recordings in All Bad Boy & All Good Girl. The other is Colour 3 - La Femme, a beautiful, melodic white label that’s been so versatile for me since I picked it up from Crazy Beat in Upminster. Has worked a treat on sound systems like Giant Steps and after parties alike. 

Tom:

The penultimate track, Drivers Anthem, is a special one for me. Super deep and melodic production, but with that trademark UK bump on the bottom end.

Norway's Prins Thomas is a giant of an artist whose influence looms large over the whole of the Scandi-scene.  The space-disco king has a sound that draws on electro, krautrock, psychedelia and prog in melodically majestic ways and has given rise to a wealth of fully realised studio albums and classy dance floor singles, mostly on Smalltown Supersound. His latest record, 2019's Ambitions, is one of his best: it found him strip things back and reinvent himself once more over the course of plenty of gently absorbing grooves and mindful moods.

As a DJ he is just as well equipped to take you on real dance floor odysseys built on ever present grooves, but coloured with melodies from the celestial realms. And that is the case on his 90 minute podcast for us, which journeys through frosty northern tundras as well as twinkling night skies with equal elan. The ups and downs along the way are subtle ones, but together they create something perfectly escapist and somehow very suited to this time of year.

Penny is part of dundst collective. Besides hosting a stylish secret stage at Feel and Artlake Festival, they are involved in the organization of Zeitraum Festival. The festival had its debut last Summer in Deutzen, close to Leipzig. A couple of groups from Leipzig just threw their visions and willpower together and built that wonderful event out of merely nothing. Watch out for whats happening there this year!

Here comes our next podcast, again straight from Hamburgs over- and underground: FFAUX. 
As part of the bustling Headshell Crew doing partys all over the city in the last years, as one part of the acidic industrial punk project Future Relics and as a producer/dj we really appreciate his diversified musical output, wandering from disco and house to a harsher sound full of noisy Ebm, broken beats and a lot of wavy synths nowadays. 
The podcast he made for us reflects this musical origins: some dark disco, cold and wistful, an 80s Ebm/ Industrial feel without getting to aggressive but all the time with a soulful groove focused on a floor we all would be dancing on.

A familiar face around the Dutch capital, Amsterdam-based DJ and producer Kennedy has been immersed in music and records for over two decades, putting into practise his mantra of moving both the body and the soul.

While day-to-day he can be found behind the counter at Red Light Records pushing wax, as well as being part of the team at Jamie Tiller and Tako Reyenga's Music From Memory imprint, his own musical endeavours see him taking over the waves at Red Light Radio and running his own Dream Machine imprint, which he launched last year with a debut record from himself. 

This year will see him release a second on the label and also debut overseas on DJ D.Dee's renowned Pacific Rhythm imprint. In the run up to these production outings, we asked him to take the reigns for this week's Shine A Light On mix, which sees him serve up a soothing selection of music for the soul...
