“Coleslaw” is the first single off of Los Duendes album "Me Recuerdas". The song was born out of a rhythm based on 16th notes grouped in 19. The ensuing melody was composed to resemble a classic 1960’s Chilean Cumbia, super imposed over an Afro-Cuban rhythm section. In typical salsa fashion, the song launches into a groovy descarga featuring Adrian Espin Samperio on the tres cubano, a small guitar with three pairs of double strings from rural areas of eastern Cuba.

Seb showed up one day with this odd meter rhythm played by the bass and guitar as a unison melody travelling in opposite directions. This compositional device was cleverly designed to build tension, bringing the song to it’s inevitable boiling point. At the peak of the tune Colin busts into a heavy slap bass groove ushering in some Celtic-like Funk under the Afro-Cuban percussion. Seb, live in studio and in one single clinical take, delivers a spectacular guitar solo to the bewilderment of everyone present. This vocal hook had come to me while driving home from work, over the instrumental it’s almost sinister sounding, calling out to grab your hat and come work in the fields as Toto Berriel sings folkloric improvised pregones. The song as a whole is frankly just nasty… like chopped cabbage slathered in Mayonaise. I never had a taste for coleslaw my self… too dank.
