The oddly shaped, vaguely bird-like creature clinged to my shoulder with its metallic claws. I turned to look into its multicolored eyes, its four pupils rotating to focus. "You will never understand a thing I say, but I think you feel instinctively that I care about you. I will never let anything happen to you," I said, trying not to smile or do anything that might confuse it. The creature did nothing. It's hard to say if it understood my promise, but it didn't matter to me. It chirped, then its eyes began to stare into the road ahead, disappearing into the distance. The journey had just begun.
