We lie to maintain harmony and spare feelings, but in doing so, we often cause greater pain. The resulting alienation and broken trust weigh heavily, leaving deep scars. Our attempts to sugarcoat reality or avoid problems typically end in disappointment and sadness. This contradictory nature of human behavior - the intent to do good through dishonesty and the inevitable consequence of harm - often leads us into an emotional abyss that is difficult to escape.
