Compilation C:\999\VA\001 is first release of Warsaw based collective and it’s debut as a label. V.A. was created with cooperation of polish leading artists, podcast platform Lost in Ether as well as fellow musician from abroad, to highlight current situation of music producers in times of lockdown. 

On the V.A. among other artists, we can hear residents of the 999 T A K A, Kuba Sojka, Violent, Tapefeed, Flaminia and End Train known from UK’s Village Underground or Superstition parties or polish leading veterans like Blazej Malinowski, Michal Jablonski or Michal Wolski. Together C:\999\VA\001 counts 23 premiere tracks. 

V.A. is divided into four stylistic parts and each focuses on the different interpretation of techno. Special thanks are due to Michal Jablonski, who put a lot of heart into C:\999\VA\001. Luckly results are adequate for the efforts. Complete assembly of compilation consists of Based on Lies, Blazej Malinowski, Concept Of Thrill, Conrad Van Orton, D-Knox, Dren, End Train, Flaminia, Hatelove, Keikari, Kuba Sojka, Makornik, Michal Jablonski, Michał Wolski, Northern Rituals, OTHK, Post Scriptum, Slope Unit, T A K A, Tapefeed, Vertical Spectrum, Violent and We Call It Voight-Kampff.

„Usually we trying to avoid assigning sublime motives to what we are doing, but this time is much different. There is a lot of talk about current situation of the clubs, festivals, but among those topics here in Poland, the matter of the artists is overlooked. This V.A. is a reminder that music that each one of us used to dance every weekend to, does not come out of nowhere. We want to highlight the topic of supporting artist in times when all of the clubs are closed and buying their music is one of the easiest and joyful ways of doing that.” This how Mateusz Skiba, who is initiator of the V.A and one of the people behind 999 sums up the idea behind compilation. 

C:\999\VA\001 is available on 999’s bandcamp page and it cost 10 euro. “10 euro is a price of the usual entrance fee to the club which only couple weeks ago we used to spend each week. Having that in mind, we strongly encourage to use those funds to support artists.” 999 adds. The whole income from V.A. will be distributed among artists involved. 

999 is a Warsaw based collective which although operates only one year, already has made strong remark on polish electronic music scene. 999 runs same-titled club, series of 50 hours warehouse marathon parties called “50 hours of love” as well as series of podcasts regarding current affairs of polish electronic music scene titled “Przegląd Techniczny”. Currently 999 add to its pool publishing activities and debuts as a label.

Conrad Van Orton and Jheal sign the third release for Eyes Have It, 30D sub-label that, as usual, explores the darkest, coldest and even suffocating side of the techno spectrum.  

As it happened in the second release (‘Sei Tracce In Nero EP‘ by Reeko & Group), the high contrast between both sides gives sense to the album, giving it a strange but perfect balance, this time quite more oriented to the dance floor. It’s for sure that some people will think that CVO and Jheal might use elements that at first sight might be familiar but, let’s be honest, both have the ability to make everything sound very original.

On the A side Conrad Van Orton, an Italian producer with a lot of experience in techno and the most experimental electronics, elevates the listening to a sonic musical experience, literally. The three tracks, although ‘Dysfunctional Organic Device’ is probably the best example, are pure techno brutality, as highly raw, energetic and obsessive as they are obviously functional. Three true ‘monsters’.

On the B side Jheal, a face already known to the label thanks to his brilliant participation in ‘Close Encounters 002’, brings melancholy (‘150 Wreaths’) and tons of introspection (‘Our Fathers’) to the record. It is not easy for industrial techno to sound as emotional as when Alejandro manipulates it, something especially remarkable for such a young producer. Congratulations.
