Rommek - Cyclical Patterns [NS006]

Rommek’s ‘Kiss of Life’ is a densely layered orchestration of pitch bends and stuttering percussion that morphs gradually from swaying synths to operatic wails, toying with the contours of reality. Closing things off, the eerily titled ‘The Owls Are Not What They Seem’ builds to a storm of detuned bells and hammerdrill leads, marching further into the woods than might be advised.

Nexe Records is back, this time featuring the debut EP from SAMOT, "Forms Of Perception". The NX1 member and label co-owner returns with his solo project delivering a vigorous record including a remix of the French producer UVB.

"Petricor" opens the EP, a slow-burning broken track with electrifying synths driving powerful drums and inducing the listener in an hypnotic dance. "Cutis Ansarina" is a muscle flexing exercise, conceived for the dance floor, solid and classy, executed to perfection. 

On the B-side "Kinestesia" is and lightning attack against the mind, wildly acid synth and percussions strike your brain. The UVB remix of "Kinesthesia" is taken to his territory where forcefulness dwells at will, built to raze the club.

Italian producer MTD rounds up crepuscular Techno grooves in a four tracker featuring fellow countryman and label regular Kaiser supplying the remix. 

Standout track '9 AM' is a piece of introspective, bare-boned percussive beatdown that unfolds unobtrusively, revealing an unexpected melodic layer. Kaiser takes on remix duties, cobbling up an equally dusky alternative. With a relentless kick drum and jarring hi-hats, it’s a very functional track that makes for a great dancefloor weapon. Meanwhile, 'Spontaneous' offers a minimal groove with a hesitant melody and a lingering lead synth lead. 'Sospiro' rounds off the release with a dissonant symphony of bells as a complementing, equally introspective yet more melodic outro.

For Haven’s sixth release in their main series co-head Keepsakes returns to the label with his first EP of 2019 and a new, slower direction for his sound. Following on from a busy touring schedule in the previous year and well received EPs on Haven, ‘Modern Anxious Vernacular’ takes a different approach to Keepsakes’ crunchy and vigorous tones, opting to explore slower tempos while maintaining his signature character in an environment of ever increasing BPMs. 

The A1 begins the EP with ‘Seep’, throwing mind-shattering kicks, eerie vocal atmospheres and shuffling hi-hats at the listener before striking with a hectic staccato synth line at the halfway mark in a highly effective slow-mo banger. The BPMs decrease further still in the A2 on ‘State Of It’, which utilises effective, stepping drum programming and left-field hypnotising synth work to create a more unusual and melodic ambience. The B-side kicks off with ‘Hovel Of Scum’, delivering a dynamic percussion loop and crushing kick drum before introducing creepy synth lines and sampling work to reintroduce a ghostly mood. Finally, the EP is closed with ‘Selfies Are For The Weak’, a slowed-down rolling broken-beat workout based around an ear-worm vocal sample and delay-heavy percussion, ending this new sonic expedition in Keepsakes’ musical world.
