In a seemingly ceaseless acreage near his childhood home in the Rockies of Colorado, Kael Smith (Mombi, Khale) takes a deep breath and listens critically to the forest. It is not the same sound he remembers as a youth, when he’d disappear for hours deep into these woods. No, the sound he hears today is unfamiliar and vapid. Muted, really.

Since Smith’s departure to the city of Denver; the Mountain Pine Beetle has moved into these woodlands and decimated the trees; devouring their insides and leaving empty husks in its wake. It is among these thinned out swaths a word keeps repeating back to him, over and over, incessantly…Deforestation. 

Painstakingly written, recorded and mixed at his home studio in Denver, 'Deforestation' (Out November 13th on Lost Tribe Sound) sprawls across nine sonorous and meticulously wrought tracks containing elements of minimal electronic, ambient and folk. Large cavernous beats, micro-ambient deconstruction and nylon guitar all swirl into a coherent palate left for Smith’s poignant, intimate words. 

Mastered specifically for vinyl by Taylor Deupree (12k), and with the additional step taken to create lacquers and metal stampers by Roger Siebel at SAE Mastering, 'Deforestation' sees a gatefold 180-gram release from Lost Tribe Sound that, like the material, takes no shortcuts. Both the album’s acetate and test pressing were scrutinized for anomalies on world-class vinyl setups at Arizona’s esteemed high-end audio dealer and vacuum tube specialists, Arizona Hi-Fi. Concluding the deluxe package and connecting intimately with the material within are stark, disintegrating images courtesy of renowned minimalist photographer Christy Romanick (Rivulets, Chihei Hatakeyam).

Dirtmusic’s previous album “Troubles,” released in June of last year, was recorded in Bamako, Mali in the dark days of the 2012 political upheaval. A propulsive collection of cinematic Afro-rock, “Troubles” for the most part rose out of improvisational sessions involving Hugo Race (Fatalists, Bad Seeds) and Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts) of Dirtmusic and the nimble, balafon driven Ben Zabo band. Malian luminaries like Samba Touré, Zoumana Téréta, Aminata Wassidjé Traoré and Virginie Dembélé from the Rokia Traoré band, brought exhilarating vocal and instrumental contributions to the collective.

“Troubles” was not a mere construct or hybrid, but rather something deeply collaborative and genre-busting. Louder Than War wrote: “an incisive and unique journey in sound…this album is rock, it’s roll, its funk, it’s African, it’s an aural delight.”

“Lion City” the new Dirtmusic album, is culled from the same Bamako sessions as “Troubles” but offers a decidedly different atmosphere and ambiance. While the Ben Zabo band is still the core collaborator, the textures and tempos are slower and more opaque. Organics and electronics intertwine and unfold unpredictably. There are less guitars and more liquid sounds. The outward frustration and fear documented on the previous album has given way to something more insular and pensive. The echoing space between the notes is emphasized and subsequently so are the voices and the texts.

Samba Touré provides a vocal and lyric for “Red Dust” a song that enshrines the contemplative mood of the album. Over a swirling dub-scape he intones:

How can we reconcile and forgive?
How can we bring peace to those that hate us?
Yet we have no choice
We need to stop fighting

While Samba Touré, Ben Zabo and his band, and Aminata Wassidjé Traoré previously appeared on “Troubles”, “Lion City” also features an inspired team of new collaborators.

+Tamikrest members Ousmane Ag Mossa (guitar), Cheikhe Ag Tiglia (Bass) & Aghaly Ag Mohamedine (percussion) appear on the bluesy and meditative “Movin’ Careful.” This is the first time the two groups have collaborated since Dirtmusic’s BKO album from 2010.

+The iconic Takamba band Super 11, from northern Mali, exchange thorn-like trance sounds with Hugo and Chris on the album’s opening number “Stars of Gao.”

+MC Jazz, an up and coming Bamako Hip Hop artist adds a fiery incantation
to the mostly instrumental “Day the Grid Went Down.”

+Ibrahima Douf, a young singer from Senegal, provides a stunning vocal on the album’s final track “September 12.” The song is an ode to his grandmother.

The 21st century claims to be borderless. A world of hyper-communication and instant nostalgia that is both celebrated and feared. On “Lion City” Dirtmusic stayed clear of such theorizing and just got on with the practice. The collective joy they found in making this music is what mattered most.

What does the future of peace and quiet look like? Is it possible for someone to find serenity in a world where population mushrooms and buildings continuously jockey for the best possible view? With Kael Smith’s (Mombi, Khale) Mute Forest this dichotomy is at the epicenter of his 'Infinity Pools EP' due April 7th via Lost Tribe Sound.

To coincide with visuals courtesy of Gregory Euclide (Bon Iver, Erased Tapes), Smith’s debut EP fuses acoustic sounds, mangled electronics and provocative lyrics across four meditative yet mesmerizing tracks.

Serving as a companion piece to his expansive and sonorous LP, 'Deforestation', due later this year, Smith’s 'Infinity Pools EP' was actually written as a reaction to that material but will be released first.“ 'Deforestation' will in a sense be a prequel to the EP,” explains Smith. “And for listeners who follow along, should provide an interesting reverse narrative,” he concludes.

“Crypt,” the EP’s opener, contains oscillating vinyl-sampled rhythms, chiming electric guitar and gently struck nylon guitar. Following that is the sparce and haunting “Volcanoes Flowing,” which traces a melancholy beat and slow, lovely piano crescendos to its heartbreaking conclusion.

Darker in tone, title track "Infinity Pools" has a commanding presence using ominous electronics and damaged samples of Le Creuset pots being struck. Heavily processed and featuring vocals from Smith’s longtime girlfriend Kelly O’Brien, the track unfurls into a hypnotic groove over the chilling words “You’ll feel like an ember trilling/out in space.”

Washing over the listener to conclude the EP, “Eat the Skin” originally started as an A Winged Victory for the Sullen remix of a song off of their recent LP, 'Atomos'. As the track progressed though, all of the layers performed by AWVFTS were eventually stripped leaving only acoustic guitar and Smith’s voice. “I like to pretend we wrote that song together, hopefully someday they will hear it” desires Smith. He uses the big, cavernous sound of acoustic guitar as base for unhurried, dulcet vocals and airy electronics. “I’ve always loved the big, acoustic sound of Seafood’s “Desert Stretched Before the Sun”“ explains Smith. “I really tried to emulate that deep resonate tone where the acoustic sounds like a tidal wave.”

Masayoshi Fujita, the Berlin-based Japanese vibraphone player, also known under his alias el fog came to the attention of label founder Robert Raths a few years ago. Not only because the vibraphone is an intriguing instrument, but also the way Masayoshi treats his instrument and draws ethereal and layered sounds, is what truly attracted him to Masayoshi’s work.

Having released more ambient-based/electronic recordings of the vibraphone under el fog, Masa became more interested in the sound of the vibraphone itself. He started to compose acoustic pieces and released the first solo album under his real name, titled ‘Stories’, in early 2013. ‘Apologues’ sees Masayoshi for the first time use an array of instruments besides his lead instrument – such as the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, French horn, accordion, piano and snare drum played by friends, but arranged by Masa himself.

In addition to the mallets, Masayoshi often plays the vibraphone with a violin or cello bow, like on ‘Tears of Unicorn’ and ‘Knight and Spirit of Lake’. He would also place bead strings on the vibraphone bars to create an ambient shimmer that can be heard on songs like ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Swallow Flies High in the May Sky’. The latter was composed to let the clarinet express its characteristics and tell its story, whilst the vibraphone takes a supporting role. “The clarinet sounds very warm and soft and very ‘spring’ to me”, says Masa.

“With this album the main idea was to evoke images, atmospheres, sceneries and stories in the listener, the images that have accumulated in myself. At the same time it was an exploration of the unexplored beauty of the vibraphone, and also a pursuit of the charm of the instrumentation and the music itself. Erased Tapes releases a lot of great stuff and naturally became my favourite label of late. And I thought it would fit well to my music.” – Masayoshi Fujita

The 'Reforestation EP' presents a carefully selected group of musicians to remix songs from Mute Forest's debut full-length 'Deforestation' along with two new original songs from Mute Forest himself ("Glass of Sand Water and "Everglade").  The 'Reforestation EP' also came as a digital download card with physical editions of the 'Deforestation' vinyl.  This collection was given a brilliant mastering by Kirk Marrison of Kiln (Ghostly International). 

The 'Reforestation EP' works as a solid accompaniment to the proper album, but also manages to stand on its own as a complete body of music.  The warm ambiance of Mute Forest's original songs set the perfect backdrop to be reshaped into something equally as intimate and memorable.

Troubles is the new album from Dirtmusic – Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts) and Hugo Race (Fatalists/True Spirit/Bad Seeds) – recorded in Bamako, Mali, in September 2012 during the high-tension and tragic recent crisis – hence the name, ‘Troubles’.

Originally a trio with Chris Brokaw (Come/Codeine), Dirtmusic released their eponymous debut in 2007, a gritty collection of acoustic ballads drawn from their American and Australian frontier roots. The band’s explorations of raw, psych-folk-rock then took a radical detour out to the Saharan desert, to Timbuktu, performing at the legendary Festival-au-Desert.

Dirtmusic’s encounter at the Festival-au-Desert with the Tuareg band Tamikrest was the catalyst for the second album, BKO (2010), a classic, one-of-a-kind trip through the interzone between ‘western’ and Tamasheq desert rock. The two bands toured Europe extensively and the album received major shout outs from both the rock/pop and “world” music press:

With the departure of Chris Brokaw, Race and Eckman decided to head further ‘upriver’, composing and recording an album from scratch in full collaboration with a select crew of Malian artists. Dirtmusic arrived in the Malian capital of Bamako with notebooks of lyrics, but without written songs or preconceived strategies. 

Drawing on musicians from the Ben Zabo and Samba Toure bands as a core rhythm section, Race and Eckman produced the sessions on the dance floor of Salif Keita’s Moffou Club, inviting in guest vocalists including not only Ben Zabo and Samba Toure, but also Virginie Dembele (from the Rokia Traore ensemble), rising star Aminata Wassidje Traore and soku-master Zoumana Tereta. 

There are many voices telling stories on Troubles, singing in Songhai, Bambara, Tamasheq and English, stories of war and peace and love and doubt in the shadow of an oncoming storm, and like a musical version of cinema verite, everything is real, in-the-moment and utterly direct.

Inspired by the collision between West African rhythms, digital sorcery and rock’n’roll, Troubles is a singular and border-slicing musical journey. And Troubles is only the first release from the sessions, with a second volume in the pipeline for a release on Glitterbeat in early 2014.

HVOB have only just released their impressive debut album, but the next EP is already on the way: "Always Like This" is almost a tribute to the Vienna-based electronic duo's current wave of success.
Number 1 in the iTunes Dance Charts in Austria and number 3 in Germany, number 3 in the Beatport Deep House Charts – and HVOB's eponymous debut album continues to win the band critical acclaim in a success story which began when the first snippets appeared on Soundcloud a year ago. HVOB's Berlin-based label Stil vor Talent, which is no stranger to success, has been delighted by one of its best selling albums to date.
HVOB's third EP is scheduled for release on April 26 – and the track selection seems to be more than mere coincidence. "Always Like This" is an accurate reflection of the young Vienna electro duo's life right now. Anna Müller and Paul Wallner are "super happy" with the way things are going, busy as they are with all the live appearances in cities like Berlin, Paris and Istanbul, long nights spent in the studio and the formation of new partnerships: alongside Four Artists, Primary Talent, one of the world's major booking agencies, will in future be looking after the interests of HVOB.
"Always Like This" is the third single from the album "HVOB". HVOB's cover of the track by British indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club mixes warm synth pads with soft beats, while Anna Müller's distinctive voice puts an entirely new spin on the melancholy of the original. Oliver Koletzki and Andhim have both made remixes of HVOB's interpretation of "Always Like This": Oliver Koletzki's version is powerful, emotive and melodic, while Andhim's shows incredible attention to detail and is intensely deep and original.
HVOB, which stands for "Her Voice Over Boys", are Anna Müller and Paul Wallner, who formed the duo in spring 2012. Müller (composition, production, vocals) and Wallner (composition and final production) produce intelligent, sophisticated electronic music, which is both easy to listen or dance to. The Vienna duo, who favour live on-stage performances with the backing of a drummer, will be appearing at the Donaufestival in Krems, Lower Austria, the Lighthouse Festival on the Lanterna peninsula (Porec, Croatia), the Pratersauna in Vienna, the Übel & Gefährlich in Hamburg and the Ninkasi in Lyon.
