'Transition', the collaborative release of Immix Ensemble and Vessel focuses on the theme of technology. Musical instruments are a somewhat technological anomaly in that they are rarely updated after their conception, often only receiving minor tweaks over the course of hundreds of years. As such, each instrument provides us with a snapshot of the cutting edge technologies of a particular time and place – in this sense, the instrumentation used by Immix provides us with snapshots of technologies that can be traced back as far as 1500BC. 

Taking these snapshots as a starting point, each movement in 'Transition' features one or two instruments, and, thematically, explores a significant invention or discovery that took place at around the same time as the invention and development of these instruments. Collaborating with Vessel updates this technological chronology by including the tools of the digital age.

Immix is lead by Australian-born composer and sax player Daniel Thorne. The now Liverpool-based artist has a genuine passion for exploring and creating music in a diverse range of forms; composed and improvised, acoustic and electronic, and the various shades in-between. Founded in 2014, the idea behind Immix has been to galvanise the innovative musical voices from across the country.

With the addition of Vessel, the moniker of Bristolian electronic composer Sebastian Gainsborough, Immix found a valuable first partner in exploring forward-thinking composition that slips between the cracks of traditional and contemporary styles. A stalwart of the UK experimental electronica community, Vessel's solo work has received critical acclaim for it’s post-industrial, visceral tone, using a sonic palette derived from the creation of home-made instruments, aiding in the creation of his signature nonreplicable sound.

As the first in this series, March 18, 2016 will see the release of 'Transition' on 12" vinyl and download, followed by a string of live performances by the collaborators. Future episodes will bring further collaborations by Daniel Thorne’s ensemble with other forward-thinking artists and ensure Immix continues to evolve and expand.

After 2016’s well-received EP,  'I Could See The Smoke', experimental guitarist Andy Cartwright (aka Seabuckthorn) returns with his new full-length album 'Turns', releasing April 21st on vinyl, CD and digital with Lost Tribe Sound.  Cartwright immediately caught our attention with his commanding full-length album 'They Haunted Most Thickly' in 2015. With 'Turns', Cartwright further solidifies his anomalous position within the genres solo guitar music, American primitive, and modern classical. 

The vinyl and CD edition arrive in the ever stunning physically and sonically minded fashion that LTS has become known for. 'Turns' takes form with a lush 180 gram audiophile grade vinyl housed in a heavyweight reverse printed jacket (limited to 500). The lacquer process vinyl edition was masterfully cut by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering in NY. Each edition comes with a Bandcamp download coupon. Plus, 'Turns' introduces a new handcrafted panoramic CD design (limited to 150 editions). 

'Turns' is an album wrought with vertical forms, heavily cinematic in design and scope.  It’s an album built from the earth. With eyes closed, one can easily imagine heavy rusted spires rising and collapsing upon themselves, only to be rebuilt from the rubble in the same instant, ever clawing towards the sky, with the rumblings of massive tectonic plates shifting below.  That said, 'Turns' is far more of a cerebral experience than its predecessors. transitioning seamlessly between hypnotic long-form pieces, minimal harp-like ballads and the primal stomping world-builders that have become Seabuckthorn’s calling card. 

Cartwright wields his minimal, yet powerful arsenal in new and intriguing ways throughout 'Turns', comprised of various twelve string guitars, a well worn resonator guitar and heavy waves of lumbering percussion. Plus, for the first time ever, Cartwright invites an outside player, composer and fellow friend of rustic orchestration, William Ryan Fritch to play double bass on three of the songs. In addition, LTS is honored to have worked with visual artist Gregory Euclide (Bon Iver, Lubomyr Melnyk) on the incredible original cover artwork for 'Turns', and sound engineer James Plotkin who handled the mastering.

From the Mouth of the Sun (aka Aaron Martin & Dag Rosenqvist) return with ‘Sleep Stations,’ an EP of six new songs, out May 18th, 2018 on Lost Tribe Sound. ’Sleep Stations’ rests comfortably alongside 2017’s ‘Hymn Binding’ their third full-length album and their original score for Joshua Z. Weinstein’s feature film, ‘Menashe.’ With ‘Sleep Stations’ the duo assures us that their exquisite palette of classical leaning, electro-acoustics reaped from their previous albums still leaves much to be explored.

In fact, the pieces of ‘Sleep Stations’ were composed during many of the same sessions as ‘Hymn Binding’ and ‘Menashe,’ yet they feel like a natural continuation of From the Mouth of the Sun’s sound, a stepping stone towards the next chapter, if you will. The core sound will be instantly recognizable for those who’ve followed their previous endeavors, comprised of cello, piano, acoustic guitars, lap steel, banjo, ukulele, pump organ, soft humming electronics and warm layer of static.

The title track ‘Sleep Stations’ was originally meant to be included on the album ‘Hymn Binding.’ It acted as a centerpiece and starting point for the music that From the Mouth of the Sun recorded later during the process of scoring the ‘Menashe’ film. The film ended up requiring an extremely spare palette, thus the ‘Sleep Stations’ EP represents a longing for a fuller and more controlled sound that exhibits the dynamic range that From the Mouth of the Sun strive for with their work.

There is a softness and detachment to ‘Sleep Stations’ more so, that seems to give the album an of aerial view of the landscape below. Where ‘Hymn Binding’ felt more grounded in the earth and soil, ‘Sleep Stations’ floats high above, feeling weightless, suspended in slow motion flight.

Arranging ‘Sleep Stations’ as an EP, has allowed Aaron and Dag to tell a shorter story, one that doesn’t have to be such a grand gesture, which is something they’ve wanted to explore for a while now. It’s a beautiful reminder, that a collection of music can still be simple yet deeply affecting, without being overwrought and excessive.

‘Sleep Stations,’ our 3rd installment in the Dead West Tape Series, arrives on a limited pro-dubbed hi-bias tape cassette, housed in a reverse printed 300gsm heavy stock outer case. The edition (limited to 100) also comes with a download card offering a choice of formats including FLAC, 320K MP3, etc. Mastering was performed by Matthew Collings (aka one half of the duo Graveyard Tapes).

About the Birth of Stars

Composer and drummer of Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi, releases his debut album for Erased Tapes on May 3rd. 'Teenages' captures the sound of electronics living, breathing and mutating of their own accord – almost autonomously – with only subtle, sparing but perfectly-judged and masterful guidance.

This album is one singular synergy between Qasim and his machine within a broader milieu of sound, also explored by contemporaries Sarah Davachi, Alessandro Cortini, Caterina Barbieri and also the forefather, Morton Subotnick. At points tonal, textural and rhythmic, over six evolving and growing audio organisms, the album flourishes upwards in stages, from initial micro-sonics to something bigger, brighter and anthemic.

With 'Teenages', Naqvi summoned all the material on an analog modular synthesizer – a voltage-controlled sound generating system comprised of multiple modules. Naqvi built this synth over the course of two years and amassed a collection of works for this album. The album chronicles both Naqvi’s understanding of writing for this type of instrument and the growth of the instrument itself:

“I started with just a few modules. And naturally things had to be layered and pieced together but as the synthesiser and its components grew over time, I was able to create broader and more complex strokes in the moment. And by the time I got to ‘Teenages’, it was possible to create a robust, large-scale piece spontaneously. This is very much an experiential album for me because it was borne out of my direct experience of learning the instrument. And as the synthesiser grew over time with more components, it matured. At times I felt like it was even rebelling against my instructions or surprising me with what felt like its own choices. When everything was finished and I was thinking about track titles, this idea of artificial intelligence came into my head; a machine that reacts to your impulses and is capable of giving you something different from what you ask, and even defying you. It felt like different stages of growth and adolescence, and that lead to the album title, ‘Teenages’.”

Deeply rewarding on close listening, Naqvi has created an inspiring and synapse-stimulating new masterwork, within the analogue/modular cannon.

The Old Capital (out on Lost Tribe Sound) is the debut album from Melbourne composers Claire Deak and Tony Dupé. The album is their first recorded collaboration, though Dupé has released two solo albums under the name Saddleback. 

The duo describes themselves as a home orchestra well-suited for late night rambling. Much like traveling in the dark of night, the sound explorations found throughout The Old Capital come into view seemingly out of nowhere. Headstrong rhythms of shuffling organic debris and lumbering stomps help light the path with some brief success, only to be swallowed up by a slow moving fog of droning organs and dampened strings. However with the proper guides, finding ones footing in this shadowy landscape doesn't have to be difficult. Claire and Tony echo this sentiment throughout with a fine balance of both playful and haunting passages. Their confidence reassures us that once our eyes adjust to the dark, it need not be a frightening place. 

A wide variety of acoustic instrumentation weave their way into the music, including: pianos, accordion, harp, harpsichord, pump organs, pipe organ, recorder, flute, trumpet, euphonium, clarinets, stroh violin, viola, wulf fidel, cello, double bass, guitar, charango, mandolin, baritone ukulele, banjo, xylophone, glockenspiel, gamelan, drums and voices. 

Lost Tribe Sound feels incredibly lucky to have stumbled upon the duo's music because of a kind tip from the good folks at the Preserved Sound label. It makes perfect sense that Claire and Tony hail from Australia. This location has turned out many our favorite electroacoustic acts, known for cobbling genres together in ways that leave just enough of the roughhewn framework showing. Comparatively speaking, Brambles, Part Timer, and Thomas William Hill (aka Origamibiro) come to mind.

Lost Tribe Sound is a record label that specializes in organic and exploratory sound.
