It's harder to do it on my baby grand, because I can't add the felt between the hammers and the strings. This is the closest I can come with a microphone near the keys, so that you can [hopefully] hear the mechanics...

Presenting ‘Departures’ (out now on Lost Tribe Sound), the debut album from μastroKristo. ‘Departures’ is a nocturne, built from a humble and quiet rehearsal for untuned piano, tuba, bassoon, and tapes. It's a tribute to the night, and to all the failed and successful attempts at falling asleep. In gentle gray and pale blue hues, its watery, moonlit emotions spill forth... a siren’s song tempting heavy eyelids to take the final plunge towards a long night’s sleep.

‘Departures’ makes use of the worn mechanics and incidental noises generated by μastroKristo’s nearly 100 years old John Spencer & Co upright piano and its exposed soundboard. The artist takes advantage of the fragile character found in the low fidelity recordings and uses it to serve an equally important role as the piano itself. The tired piano hammers collapse in cascading cyclical patterns, resting comfortably inside the hiss and the wow and flutter effects brought on by an old TASCAM cassette recorder. Further still, these moments are glued together by the relaxed conversations between a tuba and a bassoon, which help lend a certain film noir like character to the music. This combination of forward motion and fluidity creates an intoxicating ebb and flow.

Where do ideas come from?  Are they preprogrammed by external stimuli or generated from within?  The nature/nurture debate is fascinating.  Ultimately, we are given a ‘saeculum’ to experience and learn as much about how to live as we can.  How we respond to this challenge is key and unique.  Doesn’t this sound like an adventure? After 2016’s well-received EP,  'I Could See The Smoke', experimental guitarist Andy Cartwright (aka Seabuckthorn) returns with his new full-length album 'Turns', releasing April 21st on vinyl, CD and digital with Lost Tribe Sound.  Cartwright immediately caught our attention with his commanding full-length album 'They Haunted Most Thickly' in 2015. With 'Turns', Cartwright further solidifies his anomalous position within the genres solo guitar music, American primitive, and modern classical. 

The vinyl and CD edition arrive in the ever stunning physically and sonically minded fashion that LTS has become known for. 'Turns' takes form with a lush 180 gram audiophile grade vinyl housed in a heavyweight reverse printed jacket (limited to 500). The lacquer process vinyl edition was masterfully cut by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering in NY. Each edition comes with a Bandcamp download coupon. Plus, 'Turns' introduces a new handcrafted panoramic CD design (limited to 150 editions). 

'Turns' is an album wrought with vertical forms, heavily cinematic in design and scope.  It’s an album built from the earth. With eyes closed, one can easily imagine heavy rusted spires rising and collapsing upon themselves, only to be rebuilt from the rubble in the same instant, ever clawing towards the sky, with the rumblings of massive tectonic plates shifting below.  That said, 'Turns' is far more of a cerebral experience than its predecessors. transitioning seamlessly between hypnotic long-form pieces, minimal harp-like ballads and the primal stomping world-builders that have become Seabuckthorn’s calling card. 

Cartwright wields his minimal, yet powerful arsenal in new and intriguing ways throughout 'Turns', comprised of various twelve string guitars, a well worn resonator guitar and heavy waves of lumbering percussion. Plus, for the first time ever, Cartwright invites an outside player, composer and fellow friend of rustic orchestration, William Ryan Fritch to play double bass on three of the songs. In addition, LTS is honored to have worked with visual artist Gregory Euclide (Bon Iver, Lubomyr Melnyk) on the incredible original cover artwork for 'Turns', and sound engineer James Plotkin who handled the mastering.

After not having any Internet for the last couple of weeks or rather mega slow and freezing every few seconds, then followed by yet another very annoying and destructive Windows update, which messed up my computer, I found myself with no means to connect to Soundcloud and continue my music production. I was in tears and very angry with Windows and feeling frustrated as with no computer. Anyway after many hard reset, help from my very close friend, managed to make it work after updating all the drivers………blah, blah, blah. I know this is boring stuff. So before anything else happens as my computer is still not perfect, I’m taking the opportunity to upload my latest track which is meant to relax and let go of stress. Hope you like it. ‘My Cauliflower Ears’ is the third album from Netherlands-born, Benjamin van Vliet, who makes music under the name, Microwolf.  

‘My Cauliflower Ears’ combines the sonically rich, yet minimal approach of drone music, the sampling techniques of hip hop, and the intimacy of folk-styled songwriting and storytelling. It’s the kind of honest, personal, and roughhewn sort of sound that has inspired Lost Tribe Sound since our beginning in 2010. This type of hard-to-frame vocal music has always been important to us, and helped us convert some of the most diehard instrumental music fans, into fans of vocal-lead music such as this. Music where the vocal truly plays the role of an instrument, just as much as anything else in the song. Microwolf is very much in line with other acts that we’ve championed over the years, such as Mute Forest, Cock & Swan and Graveyard Tapes.

Before Van Vliet started Microwolf, he’d always made music that was a compromise. Making music with others he’d naturally strive for democracy. So the outcome would always be a mix of ideas, wherein his more outlandish ideas would usually get tossed in the process. Microwolf was designed to be an outlet for those things Van Vliet knew he’d have to do himself to get them right.

Having never fully taken the creative reins before, the first two Microwolf albums ('You Better Go Now' and the mini-album 'You Are The Everything') were a huge learning curve. 'You Better Go Now' is sonically all over the place and absolutely stuffed with ideas. That album could have been the beginning and the end of Microwolf, but about two years later Van Vliet realized he had at least one more solo album in him. After taking a refugee vow with a Buddhist lama in 2018 and diving deeper into drone music and contemporary classical music, Van Vliet set out to make a statement that was far more subtle and better articulated. An album that was short, quiet, conceptually precise, but executed loosely and freely. No tight rhythms, no strummed guitars, no loud singing. Music that embraces its own emptiness, awkwardness and fleetingness.

Elders is the fifth album from London-based guitarist Gowaart Van Den Bossche, working under the moniker yadayn. The record also serves as yadayn’s first release for Lost Tribe Sound.

Elders translates to "elsewhere" in Dutch. As that title suggests, this album is a meditation on groundedness and the possibilities of other lives in other places. Recorded after having moved from Belgium to London, Elders is a meditation on the experiences yadayn had and the personal relationships he built during, in between, and after three trips to Iran, especially its provinces of East and West Azerbaijan between 2016 and 2018. While these trips ended up resulting in a personal failure, this album is one effort to make sense of the events in the form of a highly personal engagement with Iranian musical and literary traditions.

While many of yadayn’s previous albums have mainly consisted of solo guitar recordings, Elders marks a small but important shift in approach. A pronounced use of overdubs can be heard throughout the album, along with meaningful selections of field recordings from his time in Iran, Persian poetry written by one of many random acquaintances made while traveling in Iran, and loose interpretations of traditional songs. All have embedded their charms and taken on new meaning for Van Den Bossche.

It feels right to leave many of the personal experiences behind Elders untold, at least in a written language. In its place, yadayn’s musical transcription has provided something much more powerful. Sorrow, anger, joy, and calm all make time for each other during the course of the album. Its emotions are worn on the sleeve, weary yet wiser, and ultimately grateful for the experience.

Lost Tribe Sound admires music that leaves its tattered edges proudly in place, acoustic instrumentation blended seamlessly with dirty mechanics, timeworn sound worlds rooted in the muck and the mire of the present. The sound generally falls along the lines of bizarrely rhythmic, beautifully decayed electro-acoustic music, often with a reverence for low-end. LTS focuses on full-length albums, with a strong commitment to well-made packaging.
