Earthlings Preview Part 4

Dublin residents Zachary Davison and Sean McTiernan, collectively known as @Torsotrax, are quite the rarity. Firstly, their demo sounded tailor-made for Tessier-Ashpool - and I would later be delighted to find out that indeed it was. Secondly, this was not achieved via aping any of our previous releases, but by understanding our aesthetic and anticipating what we’d be looking for next. Thirdly, no amount of
their proprietary aesthetic (which we’ll discuss shortly) was sacrificed in comingling with our own. Fourthly, as of writing this, their online profile is nigh-negligible - this is their first outing of any kind, and it was made in a vacuum at that. This praise might seem conjectural, but in an age of torrential SoundCloud fuccboi barrage, artfulness of this sort is a godsend.

Not that Torso are some eccentric savant types. In fact, they’re two of the funniest blokes I’ve ever had the pleasure to converse with, and a bit of a real-life odd couple. Between the two of them, they’ve explored every nook and cranny of pop culture, counter-culture, and regular culture, whether it was Zach trekking the world, or Sean becoming an authority on film and comics, or the both of them being in every conceivable scene at one point or another - to the effect that their friendship and collaboration, though initially socially unlikely, became inescapable as a sheer byproduct of their synchronicity. Knowing this, it’s suddenly less puzzling how they emerged so fully-formed. And with Sean holding the conceptual reins, and Zach’s command of audio in their employ, said form is that of B-movie horror transcribed into cyberized, punishing, off-kilter industrial techno.

Leading the charge is “Correct Translation Of A Headbutt”, which could not possibly be titled more aptly. Equally indebted to heyday EBM as it is to current innovations from everywhere across the British Isles, it hinges on nosebleedinducing tension, achieved via its seemingly ever-escalating arp and increasingly more blood-curdling screams of terror. Right before it becomes too much to bear, it shifts into a kick bombardment punctuated only by guttural, mechanized chants. The arp returns for a Carpenter-esque foray into melody, then the pummeling resumes, even fiercer, and fully submerged in bone-chilling atmosphere. For his take on the opener, Mutual Friend ups the tempo and strips things down, with San Franciscan electro sleaze taking center stage - a club-ready slab of prime beef atop which the original’s horror unfolds, peppered with squelches so acidic, they say “battery acid” more than they do “psy”.

“Fat Vint”, named after a minor character in the 1958 western “Warlock”, is, quite appropriately, a percussive gallop, its frenzied energy a perfect simulacrum of the maddening treachery of frontier law. And as if it wasn’t already intense enough, a paroxysmally eerie and unnerving FM synth line pervades the proceedings, morphing and recursively glitching with every bar. For my Optimix™,
I took the western theme and ran with it, employing a lot of its sonic mainstays, albeit in heavily processed and - I suppose - rather unsettling ways. Electro again here - this time with, daresay, a hefty braindance slant to it instead.

Torso - Correct Translation Of A Headbutt

Asher Levitas is perhaps best known as part of Old Apparatus, the acclaimed and enigmatic London experimental outfit. Over the last few years he has featured on releases for labels including Deep Medi, Houndstooth and Left Blank as ‘Saa’ with the singer Linn Carin Dirdal.
 
‘Lit Harness’, his first solo album, started forming as a project in 2015 alongside the artist and writer Michael Crowe who worked on the live A/V show while Asher created the music with vocalist Marina Elderton (from the Ethereal Psych band Kull) who features on the tracks.
 
The record follows personal themes in a time of extreme emotion: anxiety and madness but also serenity and acceptance, hence the term ‘Lit Harness’, which is a Harness that holds you in a calm place while chaos happens all around. Asher also wanted to describe the experience of the sleep paralysis, which he has had most of his life, into a musical sound world. That’s not to say the album is totally dark, but there’s intensity and transcendence here as well as an otherworldly beauty.
 
The music on ‘Lit Harness’ plays out in a shadowy hallucinogenic dream-like state where it’s not clear what’s meant to reflect reality or pure fantasy. Part of this process was the way the audio and visuals developed in tandem with each other, Michael passing Asher images and video, which Asher used to inject drama into the tracks and finish them.

‘Lit Harness’ could be described as ambient, but every track is filled with detail and a strange clanking drama, the hammering noises of ‘Withdrawn’ and the cold fever of ‘In The Eyes’ playing out like a dream. ‘Sheathe’ turns the record around with clouds of swirling choirs and ‘Waiting By An Open Door’ plays a hazy piano, with wind rushing through the soundfield. ‘Strongest Bonds’ has held descending chords with watery drum hits; ethereal vocals building in the background into a haze of noise. ‘Blessed Mother’s’ repeating vocals and rising chords ripple with a transcendent, gentle hopefulness, which gives way to the flatline drone and otherworldly voices of ‘Premature Exit’. ‘Anticipating Violence’ finishes the album with a sad, angry surrender, punctuated with rushes of cold hammering and reversed breaking glass.

The Intergalactic Research Institute for Sound is proud to present fresh music from the legendary german duo Air Liquide. Active since 1991, Dr Walker and Jammin Unit have released more than 50 records with their band Air Liquide. 

This is their first official outing since 2004, but that does not mean that these two were hiding somewhere for 15 years. Jammin Unit stayed busy with his Jammin Masters – mastering studio and Dr Walker was heavily involved in the Liquid Sky artist collective and they kept making music sometimes undercover, or on remix duty/coproducing with Coldcut and Ninja Tune and other high profile artists. 

“This is a Mind Trip” nods to the 94’s Love Parade, Dr. Motte, and things that could ring nostalgic for some. However there is no nostalgia in these three tracks. Air Liquide was always looking towards the future and this hasn’t changed despite the hiatus between the releases. 

We’ll spare you more useless chatter about a new take on techno, because this is a mind trip and not a body journey! 

And this trip is damn good!

AIR LIQUIDE 

Formed in 1991, Air Liquide is a “mythical” electronic music act composed of Ingmar Koch and Cem Oral. After meeting in Frankfurt during a jam session, they started to collaborate and released Neue Frankfurter Elektronik Schule, soon followed by their first LP Air Liquide. Throughout the 90’s their records explored many new themes in electronic music influencing the genre for the next decades. They notoriously performed with American poet Mary Susan Applegate who contributed with vocals on some of their songs. After Let Your Ears Be the Receiver in 2004, the duo separated and did not release any new music under their Air Liquide guise until 2018.

After a long intermission, Brambles is finally back with ’Spirits’. Since their last album, ‘Charcoal' (2012), the sound palette has shifted dramatically but the moody and melancholic qualities that made their previous release so resonant remain deeply embedded.

With 'Spirits’ Brambles has put vocals to the forefront using a combination of their own voice and an array of samples that have been shifted, warped and blended into an otherworldly language. Influenced as much by dream pop as experimental electronic music, Brambles strives to find the middle ground between pop and ambient.
