Destroyer and Ridalin were recorded during the making of Lotus’s new album to be released this fall.  Working with Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man) and David Wrench (Caribou, Bat for Lashes) the band recorded a large batch of tracks over the last two years.  These are the first recordings from those sessions to be released.

Ridalin’s hip-hop swing, heavy bass and harmonized guitars construct the foundation for guest vocalist Monika Heidemann’s smoky vocals.  Melodies and counter-melodies are passed between guitar, synths and vocals taking Lotus’s signature sound to new places.  Heads will nod, subs will shake.

Midnight City

Instrumental post-rock and electronic dance band Lotus is set to release its third full-length studio album September 13th via SCI Fidelity Records. The self-titled album finds the band moving in a decidedly more electronic direction, while still staying true to their organic roots.  

Analog synthesizers, manipulated sounds, dub effects and heavy bass are balanced by horns and string arrangements in addition to Lotus’s standard guitar/bass/drums instrumentation. Grooves range from slinky funk and gritty half-time on the first half of the album to the beautiful and expansive closing track “Orchids.”

Although bits and pieces of vocals are used throughout, the only song to feature singing is “The Surf.” And while it may be the closest thing to a pop song the band has ever released, the melodic guitar hooks and ecstatic synth are pure Lotus.

We've been fans of The Album Leaf going back a number of years.  During the summer of 2010 we played 3 shows with the band and met Jimmy LaValle (the main mind behind The Album Leaf).  His compositions have a unique ability to bring a very human and affecting element to music that is steeped in electronics.  We decided he should remix one of the least electronic compositions from the Lotus album “Orchids.”  LaValle created a mix that combines the lush strings and guitars of the original with The Album Leaf's signature approach to atmosphere and beat to create a track that invokes a sepia-filtered, cinematic nostalgia.

Lotus has crafted a unique musical style outside of simple genre limitations. On a given weekend the band could be the only group with guitars at an all electronic music festival and then the next night crash a traditional rock festival with their dance heavy beats, synths and samples. Equal parts instrumental post-rock and electronic dance, the band's distinguishing feature is the ability to maintain a decidedly unique musical voice and remain current while bucking passing trends.

No matter what the venue, the energetic joy and catharsis of a Lotus show is infectious. The band slowly built a devoted fan base through steady touring and the crowds have grown at an increasing pace. This grassroots growth has made the band in high demand for festivals including Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Ultra, and Rothbury and earned the band sold out shows at the country's premier theatres and clubs.
