Bristolian Stephen Redmore, known through his drum & bass alias Mako, is finally set to unleash his forthcoming LP on Metalheadz, something which he’s been working on behind the scenes for some time. The label head of Utopia is well known for his slick production and penchant for underground anthems, something which has been seen again and again on his own imprint, as well as across a plethora of labels which have acted as pillars for the drum & bass world. Having already made his presence felt before within the catalogue of Metalheadz, as well as Break’s Symmetry Recordings, Dispatch, Soul:R and Samurai Music, he’s a valuable part of the genre’s make up, which is why the announcement of his forthcoming LP ignited widespread anticipation.

Directly translated to ‘a body of art’, Mako’s LP ‘Oeuvre’ is representative of his life’s work in music production. The switching breaks of ‘Heartstone’, slamming, yet eerily hollowed snares of ‘Offline’ and grinding bassline of ‘Life Cycle’ alongside the late Andy Skopes, a testament to the legacy he left behind, set the tone. Meanwhile, Villem and Fields join Mako for the LP’s next collaboration ‘Liquid Groover’ before the emotive swelling build of ‘The Window’ gives way to a second drop beat switch up, continuing the journey. ‘Flip it’ has already been doing the club rounds, as the moody Photek atmospherics of ‘One Reality’ and more affectional twists of ‘Holding You’ adds to the tracklist’s versatility.

‘The Scenic Values’ underscores Mako’s love of Krust and Doc Scott production grooves, whilst the experimental soundscape of ‘Hoxton Home’ heralds back to old Lemon D. ‘Oh Really’ finishes the album’s more club-orientated offerings, which follows with a 170bpm techno style track via ‘Passive Aggressor’. ‘Oeuvre’ is a walkthrough of Mako’s many personalities as a musician and it finds a welcome home within Metalheadz’s historic discography.

By 1998 Hidden Agenda had made a huge impression on jungle and drum & bass, first with their earlier Metalheadz releases then with their excursions onto Fabio's Creative Source, so when 'Channel' came along much was expected from the 2 brothers.

A heavy dose of minimalistic funk washes over the title track for a 9 minute rollout which is then cleverly deconstructed for an electro interpretation in 'Channel Beyond', whilst 'No Mans Land' returns to familiar territory as a dancefloor weapon. This was a 3 tracker with the perfect blend of flavours that epitomised the duo's musical outlook, and the remaster makes the whole thing sound even better.

As a respected member of the Metalheadz family for 7 years, the time has now come for Friske to unleash his first full length album in the shape of 'A Different Perspective'.

Since breaking through, Friske, aka Sam Oliver, has consistently and habitually honed his skills whilst preserving an ever-present style that focuses on razor sharp breaks and dark and foreboding moods, as well as incorporating veins of influences from b-boyism and hip hop culture.

A product of 3 years of hard and diligent studio work, 'A Different Perspective' is without doubt Friske's own take on drum & bass. This is an artist who has never followed trends and prefers to take inspiration, stimulation and motivation from outside of the genre - something arguably reminiscent of early powerhouses such as Adam F and J Majik. This is an irrefutable factor in the culmination of a more alluring fusion of sounds which is where Friske really begins to hit his apex.

It's been a long time coming for John Rolodex and a Metalheadz EP, 16 years on from his label debut as a collaborative feature on MDZ.04. The Canadian born and based producer and DJ is considered a pioneer of the North American drum and bass scene, and has released across a variety of labels including his own Machinist Music which he founded in 2010.

John started reaching back out to Goldie in 2017 and over the next couple of years 'The Rainmaker EP' took shape. Across 5 tracks, 6 including a bonus track, John draws from a long history submerged within drum and bass culture, the result of which is captured in the immense title track haunted and driven by Khadija's lavish vocal talents. Throughout the rest of the EP we're treated to an abundance of variety at a consistent standard, from the funk-driven 'La Bodega' to the curiously captivating sounds of 'Interdimensional Espionage' - we're glad to be welcoming John to the label for a long overdue release.

Previously dubbed the "silent assassin" of the Metalheadz camp by Goldie himself, Mikal's music has always been characterised by quality over quantity. The Swedish born, now Bristol-based producer, has the ability to keep his head down in the studio only surfacing when he's satisfied and fulfilled with his sonic creations, something he's held in high esteem for throughout the genre.

His second album on Metalheadz is aptly titled 'Metalwork' and it comes 4 and half years after 'Wilderness', his debut album labelled a "true expedition" by Mixmag and an example of "precision-engineered drum & bass" by Juno. Just like the first album 'Metalwork' contains 16 thunderous tracks, from the opening track 'Journey Into The Reverb' which comes dubbed out and perforated with amen snippets, to the tumultuous temperament of 'Breaks & Pads' which is an instant Metalheadz hit and a linchpin to the whole project.

Collaborations are loosely scattered but perfectly placed as the likes of Visionobi, DJ Thor and RIOT (who has featured on 2 previous Mikal releases) are added into the mix, but for the majority of the album this is Mikal doing what he does best, flaunting his production skills and firmly justifying his position on the label.
