Gangstercast 61 comes from Toronto-based House and Techno legend Carlo Lio.

Some artists are content earning the label of “overnight sensation,” while others patiently rely on hard work, dedication, and perseverance to earn the title of “everlasting sensation.” The latter is unquestionably the case for enigmatic Toronto native producer/DJ, Carlo Lio.

Originally known for leading the pack of prodigiously talented Toronto producers, Carlo has utilized his trademark cosmic house and techno sound to cement his status among today’s prodigiously talented world-renowned producers.


For proof, look no further than his remix of the‘Diablo’ track on Cocoon Recordings. One of the greatest rewards an artist can receive is to be recognized by his musical heroes, and an even greater honor occurs when those heroes ask you to remix for them. Such was the case for Carlo when Dubfire and Oliver Huntemann approached him to remix ‘Diablo’. Without hesitation, Carlo accepted this project and the resulting track not only topped the charts, but it manifested Carlo’s personal dreams in a single shot. Ever since, Carlo’s discography has exploded, with his music catching the eyes and ears of some of the biggest labels in the market – SCI+TEC, Bedrock Records, MOOD, Desolat, Suara, Intec Digital, and Mindshake Records just to name a few. And in the coming months, Lio will be releasing remixes and collaboration projects for Mathew Dear (aka Audion), DJ Sneak, Paul Ritch, Carl Cox, and Nicole Moudaber.

As talented as Carlo is in the studio, his deep pulsing tech-house and shaggy techno beats are even more powerful with captivating dancers in clubs and festivals around the globe.

With home bases in both Toronto and Barcelona, Lio effortlessly maintains the life of a superstar DJ, continuously roaming the planet for new dance floors to conquer. This year alone has Carlo billed on some of the world’s biggest events, including BPM Festival (Mexico), Digital Dreams (Canada), Audiogate (Germany), Balaton Sound (Hungary), Barrakud (Croatia), Les Plages Electroniques (France) and Music On (Ibiza).

Having no intentions of slowing down from this pace anytime soon, rest assured Carlo Lio is at the top of his game, routed straight into the international limelight with a lifetime of 
accolades ahead.

We asked Carlo to explain to us how this mix represents him as an artist to which he replied; “Well it def shows that I'm not just a techno head. Its very easy to be labeled in this game. So this mix gave me a chance to show a bit of my roots. Touch up on some funk & Grooves.” 

We caught up with Carlo Lio to give us a lil insight to this mix…..

Carlo describes the House Gangster sound as; “Very organic”. He says; “A ton of soul and personality and brings out the joy in people as music should.” 

House music means everything to Carlo. “Without house, there is no you or me. I owe my life to house.” 

Asking him in particular what the ‘house gangster movement’ meant to him, he stated; “Its about Never forgetting your roots. Its about staying to true to who you are as an artist / person and innovator!”

Telling us how he chose the tracks in compiling this mix for us, he says; “Having a chance to do a 2 hour mix, i def went across the board. So i def got in some new joints but also dug back a bit and added some older favs of mine.”

Episode 83 of the Gangstercast series is orchestrated by Rob Paine from Worship Recordings. Rob’s roots run deep. From the moment he heard music as a youth, he knew where his mind, body, and soul would take him. That passion has provided the foundation for a diverse and eclectic musical immersion ever since!  He has been on a rapid rise from bedroom mix tapes to underground events to DJing internationally.  He, along with his Circle Production crew, created and curated some of the most epic parties in Philadelphia. In parallel, he began to flex his music theory education and production expertise by creating a broad range of songs across a myriad of genres such as house, techno, reggae, broken beat, dub, and down-tempo.

Rob formed WORSHIP RECORDINGS in 1998 along with Dan Thompson and Zack Eberz. This brand clearly reflected his vision to pay respect to the roots of music while inspiring him self and others to innovate for the future. In fact, in 1999 he was awarded the “Most Innovative Producer” by the Philadelphia City Paper.  Soon after, he and Zack began using the SOLOMONIC SOUND name for their productions and as a vehicle for releasing their dub-influenced house and techno tracks on Worship.

When we sat down with Rob we asked how this mix represents him as an artist and he said, "most of the time I keep my mixes pretty heady. But this one represents more of what you would get out of me in a live setting. More of a freestyle selection. I really enjoyed mixing this.”

He went on to explain, "house music is my church. Unlocking instinctual tribal meditation through dance. Connecting my mind, soul & body with music completely.”

ROB PAINE | GANGSTERCAST 83

Episode 89 of the Gangstercast series is brought to us by Ritmo Du Vela all the way from Mexico City, Mexico. Ritmo Du Vela also known as Oscar V, is an important player in the Mexico’s underground house music scene. The talented DJ has shared a stage with the likes of DJ Sneak, DJ W!LD, Mark Farina, Sonny Fodera, Jay-J, Andrew Emil and many more. The track Jazz Sounds by Ritmo Du Vela was included in the top ten of Mark Farina’s 10 Real Deal Deep House Tracks for Pulse Radio. The jazz and jackin style DJ was mentioned by The Music Reviews, in an article entitled The Mexican Names in House Music and also won the award for best producer in The House Music Awards back in 2013.

When we sat down with Oscar, we asked how this mix represent him as an artist, to which he said “I always try to keep classic house sounds in my music… as an act of loyalty to house music and just to keep real, this mix is just me loving house music.” 

He went on to explain what the House Gangster movement meant to him, “House Gangster is a space where we can find and share the real sound of house music without disposable trends. It's one of the big works to promote and spread the house essence. I look at House Gangster as a kind of revolution.”

Episode 91 of the Gangstercast series is brought to us by Ralo & Strada aka Raul Peña and Felix Estrella, who are two incredible producers originating from the world of Hip Hop and now making House - one living in Miami and the other in Atlanta. Being an audio engineer for big Hip-Hop names in the early 90’s Ralo eventually got tired and felt like it was time to flip the script and speed up the tempo creating fresh house grooves. His productions have been played by Jesse Perez during BPM 2014 and the release of his EP on Sishi Rosch & Diego Moreno's imprint Digital Delight in 2016. 

Strada was born in the south of Lima Peru, he then made his way to the U.S. as a young boy. Constantly in the studio, working diligently and searching each day for new sounds, he fell in love with the raw, filthy, nasty, funky and groovy beats of house music. It was in 2014 when they crossed paths, fellow producers who shared the same passion. They teamed up for an EP on Miami’s own Mr. Nice Guy Records in late 2015 and recently released on IAHG in 2016, and there's plenty more to come for this dream team!

When we sat down with the guys, we asked how this mix represent them as artists, to which Ralo said “It represents the sound we love to create and share with everyone at our shows.” 

Strada went on to explain how they choose the tracks for this mix, “We hand-selected these tracks by reaching out to fellow producers for their unreleased music and chose a few tracks that hold a special place in our hearts. We are very eager to share them with all you gangsters… The special thing about this mix is that we get to express our sound, our hard work and dedication that we have been striving for since we started working together two years ago.”

Mikey is a DJ, producer and vocalist from Los Angeles, California, who has been a staple on the West Coast underground house scene since 2006. He is best known for throwing the infamous HAWT underground parties. In 2014 Mikey found himself focused mainly on original productions and vocal projects, with releases on Classic Music Company, Dirtybird, Snatch!, Great lakes Audio, Cajual Records and Salted Music.

When we sat down with Mikey, we asked how the mix represented him as an artist, Mikey replied with “I like to keep things lively and fun with a blend of deep, jack, soul and tech.”

Mikey went on to explain, what house music meant to him “House music is my life. It truly saved me so many times and shaped me into the person I am today. I knew a long time ago this was for me, regardless of my place in it. When you know, you know. It’s more than just the music it’s the way of life.” We then asked Mikey what the House Gangster movement meant to him, he responded with, “It’s a game changer. I love how it stays true to that proper, raw underground sound that a lot of people maybe haven’t been exposed too, that’s so important. It’s been crazy awesome seeing it grow so much over the years, and I think it’s just the beginning.”

Luke Solomon 50 min Boiler Room Mix

I've been listening to house since 1996 and spinning all kinds ofhouse since 2002. That means I'm almost spinning for a decade! Nice :) Still loving it!
I'm also known as "Boxers" from the DJ duo "Sox and Boxers" (check out http://soundcloud.com/SoxAndBoxers). 

I love to create smooth mixes in terms of trackselection and like my mixes to have a natural sounding flow. Mixing two tracks for 2 or 3 minutes or more is more of a habit than a coincedence. That can be a problem if you need to go the bathroom during a set ;)

My styles: underground house, chicago house, jazzy swing house, a little sniff of tech/groovy minimal/robothouse and occasionnaly I'll throw in some jackin house
.
Favourite label: Robsoul!

I also like hiphop and turntablism, but don't mix it myself.

Usual gear: 2x CDJ100S, 1x Dateq XTC, 1 Yamaha amplifier, 1 scrawny monitor speaker, and a PC with a SB Audigy to record the goodness.

I recently bought some oldskool hardware to start producing, hope it'll sound better than my Fasttracker 2 productions from10+ years ago ;)
