Louis McCoy is a master craftsman in every sense of the word. A legend of a human behind much loved local underground institutions the likes of Inner Varnika and For Home Use Only, and an expert on the tools be it in the kitchen or on a building site, Louis first and foremost is a passionate music obsessor with a savant like ear for records that cut deep. 

Sometimes found under the cheekier guise of hndsm, Louis seriously knows whats up when it comes to 90s music from the UK, and focusses his attention here on the massively influential sound of trip hop that he grew up nodding his head to as a teen. Treating us to near-on three hours of raw and dusty underground classics from the roots of the 90s Bristol trip hop movement, we find ourselves deep beneath the murky waters of the reggae and the shoegaze infused, to moments of heavy, emotion packed atmospheric soul and a healthy dose of the all out experimental. One for the OG chillout heads, this really is a trip like no other!

An all-star selector who builds sets from the underground up, Chaz is a deep digger, classy collector and all-round purveyor of rare finds and classic tracks from the bygone eras of house, techno, trance, electro and iterations in-between. Having played host to international artists including Kabuto and Mark/Klon Dump under the Syrup Records banner, Chaz is well acquainted with throwing a damn good party. In more recent times, Techworld (run alongside @sandpit_alias) has risen like a technicolour phoenix from the ashes of lockdown to cult-like status. As the scene’s taste for faster tempos grows and accelerates, Techworld offers monthly reprieve from the chaos by taking us back to basics. Good records, long sets, a rotating roster of the country’s finest DJs and a custom ENM Research mixer coalesce (with a few blue drinks) once a month at miscellanea to give us 18 hours of unadulterated afterhours hedonism. Chaz joined me live in the PBS studio for Passing Notes episode 187, but here we are lucky to hear a 1 hour guest mix recorded live at Techworld.

for the backroom and basement dwellers among us, summer offers a rare side quest to less darkened surrounds. fase uno of these dances are ye olde aluminium room 2s that navigate the a-roads and home our journeys. 

I got this mix just in time for one of those trips two weeks back. dubbed out, cosmic, with zero concern to conform, it’s 3hrs ov mix totally at ease with letting go. music like this could only come from one of the realest, jaye ward. being introduced to jaye’s sounds from early on has been of one of life’s better coincidences.

"This mix has dub as its backbone, but I wanted to explore different atmospheres throughout the journey. It starts off smooth, with downtempo and deep sounds, gradually giving way to a more intense and rhythmic energy. From there dub-infused house holds the essence until the very end. The idea was to create something fluid and varied, that takes you from one point to another without losing the connection. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together."

As Louis writes:

"I've been subconsciously compiling this mix for years now, but it's made a lot more sense during the last 6 months. I think it's important to remember to feel something, whether it is pure joy or overwhelming melancholy, I wanted to cover both aspects in this and everything in between. A lot of the music in this mix really means a lot to me, from my mother's jazz influences to my teenage years on a strict diet of emo trip-hop. I wanted to make a soundtrack from literally putting the kettle on first thing on a cold Sunday morning to hopefully take you through to a semi-productive day in the kitchen with someone you love. To be honest, just enjoy it, any way you can."

For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

Louis McCoy, aka hndsm, possesses an audio résumé and reputation as a selector and curator that certainly does precede him. A founding member of the Inner Varnika Music festival and organiser of the now defunct yet legendary Out of Focus parties along with his present day involvement with the burgeoning Common Ground platform and newly established mix series, For Home Use Only, Louis over the many years of playing and holding events has etched out his own audio space in the collective memory of Melbourne’s dance community, quickly becoming a principle mainstay and purveyor of fine bounce espousing the principles of groove and flavour.

Unearthed from Melbourne’s inner Western suburbs, Lou from a early age developed an unhealthy penchant and love for electronic dance and rhythm which naturally escalated within him a strong desire to contribute and imbue Melbourne’s underground community with his own distinct, creative and broad perspective on what it requires to incite a dance floor.

A serial party starter and highly skilled technician behind the turntables, and as a result of being exposed to such wide array of electronic signatures, Louis has developed that highly sought after skill of being able to furnish any context with the appropriate vibe in order to create the required experience.

Under his many guises, aliases and incarnations ranging from Neptunes Trident, Lou-is to hndsm, Louis cut his swathe since the beginning of the decade, honing his craft in venues all over Melbourne. From warming up and opening proceedings for international luminaries along with playing local and inter-state festivals, most notably Rainbow Serpent, where he has come to own his market stage slot over the past 4 years, Louis in the process has deliberately developed his own and distinct approach to deejaying underpinned by his extraordinarily wide palate.

A true eclectic and tireless digger, Louis has that rare ability to weave and grind between hip hop, house, drum’n’bass and all things obscure whilst never losing the flow and keeping the narrative intact. A title not bestowed among many, yet fittingly here, Louis McCoy is a “dancers” Deejay.

I respectfully acknowledge the original custodians of the land on which we work, predominantly that of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, and that sovereignty has never been ceded. we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
