I have long sought a full biography of Dudley and knew of this book but could not find a copy. I am glad it has been reproduced. The author is definitely on Dudley's side and answers his many detractors, revealing how misrepresented Dudley has often been due to a few remarks made by John Winthrop who was himself more often Dudley's ally than anything else. Although some of the author's remarks reflect his own time, 1899, in making his judgments, it is a very balanced portrait of the time and the period, trying to make Dudley look good, but using research to support his arguments. I thought it all fair. The author did not shy away from times when Dudley might not appear in the best light but defended Dudley while showing he was also a product of his own time. Clearly, Dudley deserves far more credit than he has received as being one of the founders of Massachusetts and the cause of liberty in America's early years. His role in founding a colony, fighting against slavery in the colony, signing the charter to establish Harvard College, and his many efforts to keep the colony protected from its detractors and those whose religious ideas could be detrimental to its success all deserve more appreciation and attention than they have received. Anyone interested in colonial history will find this book a wealth of information.
