Phil Weeks and Robsoul Recordings kick off their 15th year in house music with a new three track EP from the main man himself.  Live At Palladium has been the standout track of Phil’s sets over the last few months, always generating a queue of people asking what it is.  You may just recognize the Marvin Gaye sample, which was also previously “borrowed” by Moodymann.  It comes backed with the funk-infused You Want My Love and the soaring, chugging groove of Demain A Jamais, and looks set to get another year off to a flying start for one of the finest labels in underground house music.

Hurt You

Nincs, a Hungarian word roughly translating to "there is no", is the debut EP of Kornél Kovács, one third of influential Stockholm label Studio Barnhus alongside Petter Nordkvist and Axel Boman. Kovács' latest outing Szikra struck a chord with lovers of quality house music worldwide and as 2014 came to a close it lingered on top of many a year-end-list. But the sheer beauty of Szikra was only the beginning. 2015 is set to be a monster year for Kovács and it all begins with Nincs EP. 

Leading track Nordic Rave 4 sets the ball rolling with hyper-edited vocals and rolling percussion shrouded in frosty atmospherics and rudebwoy soundbites. Don't sleep on the acidic bassline that sneaks up on the unsuspecting towards the end. 

Utopia, Ohio is like all the characters of 80s movie classic The Breakfast Club rolled into one modern house track: the pretty tenderness of The Princess, The Athlete's muscular effectiveness, the off-kilter weirdness of The Basket Case, IDM techniques worthy of The Brain and the smooth ruthlessness of The Criminal - jackin' for beats in dusty record bins all over the world. 

The grandiose pads and descending bassline of Tooth make up a track that is as imposing as dizzying. Slightly out-of-tune samples quiver like a struck drum - thoroughly processed and mangled through Kovács' mutated machine park. 

Closing track So So Solid surprises by not being the ultimate clash between Jermaine Dupree and Reebok-clad grime stylings, although Kovács could probably pull that off as well. Instead we get a beatless loopfest akin to The Field or Gas - pure angst-ridden bliss! 

Collaborating with studio wizard Matt Karmil has given these productions an exquisite aural depth. On Nincs, the idiosyncrasies of Kornél Kovács' work come into light, always finding the sweet spot between crazy, sexy and pretty damn cool.

It’s a very exciting time for Soul Of Hex right now.  Not only have they hit upon a rich vein of creative inspiration and clearly loving every second of being in the studio making some brilliant music, but the young duo from Tijuana also seem to be inadvertently, or maybe purposefully, shaping a fresh new direction for the Mexican house scene. Taking influences from Detroit via Berlin, and with a knowledge of house, jazz, funk, soul and disco which goes way beyond their years Sebastien Vorhaus and 4004 are in the vanguard of this new generation of house producers and are already making their mark worldwide through releases on CVMR, MCDE, Faces and their own Vicario LTD imprint. 

With close links to, and a residency at The Wherehouse club in Tijuana, a Boiler Room set under their belt, a blistering live set currently being prepped, a remix and support from Larry Heard and further releases scheduled for Quintessentials and Faces, we’re happy to have got in quick while we have the chance and can present to you this lovely release entitled The Muth. 

Opening up we have The Third Eye, defined by a slowly modulating rhodes pad, octave bassline and a dusty drum groove to move you.  Next up is The Muth, another killer bassline (giving us a good idea that Vorhaus is in fact himself a bass player, despite this being a sample - the clue’s in the title!).  Laid back sunshine vibes all round with sporadic rhodes and tropical percussion fills. 

Flipping over we have a remix from hotly tipped Londoner Henry Wu.  Who other than the Peckham-based beatmeister and Jimpster’s favorite new producer to work his magic?  And work it he does!  Vibes for days on this one, adding his own unique sound to the existing parts.  Closing out the EP we have a third original going by the name Sly Batuque.  Once again the boys have got that sample heavy chopped up MPC groove down to a fine artform and it provides another example of why Soul Of Hex are about to cause such a stir.
