The first in a series of remixes from Bad Colours critically acclaimed "PINK" album comes from up and coming NYC production duo musclecars. Tackling the Hip-House vibes of "Skin To Skin", musclecars pull back and flip the track's unexpected Brazilian outro into a Bossa Nova flavoured dancefloor chugger complete with plenty of funky organ, guitar, and an infectious bassline. A proper remix that's completely original and inspired.

This month Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes the multidimensional, Brooklyn-based DJ, producer and instrumentalist @toribiomusic. Known for his DJ sets, live shows with his band @conclave_music, and his BDA (Bring Dat Ass) nights, the artist channels different dancefloor-leaning styles — such as house, techno, disco, electro, and hip-hop — into a single genre-less entity.

All of Toribio’s musical expressions are synthesized into dance music, which has seen him rub shoulders with house legends like @joe-clausseel, or Louie Vega (@nuyoricansoulnyc), resulting in them remixing his solo work or music by Conclave. The latter is his live musical assembly, which so far has released one full length album on the New York based label @loveinjection records. 
 
For Carhartt WIP Radio, Toribio prepared a mix that features music he either made or had a part in making, transforming it all into a musical voyage that shows his progress as a musician and displays how all his various musical endeavors are interconnected. Accompanying the show is an interview with Toribio, who shares his thoughts on being pigeonholed as a Latin drummer or keeping New York’s club legacy alive. As he looked through the body of shadows he could see very little which might give any indication as to her whereabouts. He started to panic, started to dance because he had little choice and continued to move between the sea of darkness. He needed her now, his friend.

In a world of widening extremes, plastic fills the oceans, an insect apocalypse threatens the delicate balance of natural ecosystems and a million dead fish rise from the depths of the Murray-Darling Basin. Dread and hopelessness come naturally in the face of these overwhelming crises, but optimism still manages to persist. 

Harvey Sutherland’s rolling samba keeps a relentless pace, punctuated with a loping gospel mantra – they say there’s something in the water – delivered by Jace XL, whose past credits include live and studio recordings with Hiatus Kaiyote; backing vocals for Sampa the Great; and ‘Sacrifice’, a 2016 EP with Silent Jay released on Rhythm Section International. 

SOMETHING IN THE WATER is the first single from Harvey Sutherland’s new studio band, which comprises long-time drummer Graeme Pogson, percussionist Phil Binotto and bassist Luke Hodgson. It was recorded and produced at Harvey Sutherland’s velour-lined recording studio that might just come in handy as a survival bunker when the approaching apocalypse hits Melbourne’s inner-northern suburbs.

Conclave is con clave, a unifying rhythm that is the key to unlock dances ancient and contemporary.
Conclave is Cesar Toribio and Scott Scribner, multi-instrumentalists whose alchemy is evident in the ebb and flow of their compositions, paradoxes of the delicate and powerful inextricably woven around the rhythm.

After a dozen live shows over the past couple years, the Brooklyn-based group take their first steps on vinyl with an impassioned cover of the soul standard “Sunny,” a song whose Latin Disco pedigree makes it the perfect canvas for the Dominican+New Yorker collaborators. An ethereal gospel choir lifts Toribio’s heartfelt vocals over twining guitar and keys that gradually build and eventually bubble over to ride a churning bass line into the heavens — Paradise, in this case, being a funked-up extended instrumental jam on the groove.

Seven Davis Jr. joins the circle for a flip side remix that is nothing short of stunning. Languidly paced, the sparse mix gradually grows in intensity with an unforced charm that lends a startling drama to the entrance of the rippling bassline a full three minutes in. When the keys finally arrive like a burst of light thru the clouds, the door to the dance has been fully thrown open and the listener’s transformation from bystander to part of the conclave is complete.

The release of “Sunny” is rounded out with an acapella, available on vinyl and digital, an enticement for future collaborators, perhaps. Conclave’s debut album will touch down summer 2020, but this Most Excellent 12-inch is certain to hold you over till then, and beyond.
