Long time Nervous Horizon affiliate DJ JM is back on the imprint with a new essential club EP titled ‘Barrakuda’. 

Marking the Lithuanian artist's third release on Nervous Horizon, after last year’s ‘Abnormal’ EP, ‘Barrakuda’ is perhaps the greatest expression to date of a confident and refined rawness that DJ JM has become known for. 

Composed as a frenzied collection of club cuts bearing the quintessential playful swagger of JM’s attack-drum style, Barrakuda’s freneticism is alleviated and accentuated through diverse drum steps and highly attitudinal melodics.The title track’s rolling percussive groove and warping crescendos which open the EP are followed by the fluctuating arpeggiated synths of the bristolian-tech influenced ‘Charge’. A driving tribal electro groove accompanied by a catchy 4/4 beep melody make “Swilling’’ a captivating club anthem, while the striped back electro warper ‘Unzyp’ reaches the edges of the industrial sonic realm with house accents and wailing sirens. The eerie mood of the proto-tribal-house inspired ‘Winted’ is the perfect lead to Barrakuda EP’s closing track ‘Sygnal’, which features label head TSVI and rounds the EP on a more straight up techno note, bearing all the hallmarks of the pair's respective signature sounds.

Señor Chugger, a prolific Bristol-based producer and remixer, makes his debut on Wrong Era with an EP filled with his unique blend of euphoric synth lines and sophisticated, arcane themes. His music immerses listeners in a synth-ridden realm, offering a collection of instant classics. The EP, 'Sunset On The A38' , also includes remixes from Wrong Era Label heads Sesto Senso and fellow label affiliate Radondo.

Señor Chugger sets the tone with '75 To Seafront ', a track that kicks the release into high gear. The tight, weighty drums and metallic pads create a powerful backdrop, while the descending bass-arp adds a visceral element. '75 To Seafront' seamlessly combines Chugger's monstrous bass tones and fluttering emotional melodies, creating a journey of euphoria with each rhythmic combination.

'Party In A Field In Cornwall' flirts with flashes of early UK house and Señor Chuggers special blend of Italo Disco. A creamy synth line, singing over a rasping, defined bass riff, unfolds into the mix. Still in keeping with the solidity of the intro track, percussion is robust and melodics are carefully detailed. The midway point of the EP is marked with the endlessly emotive and sophisticated 'Festival Skyline'. Painting an artful sonic depiction of its title' Festival Skyline' breathes a modern breath onto the golden era of new wave with choral harmonies that bring a tear to the eye and a bassline that anchors these emotions.

Stepping into the synthwave 'From The Harbour' weaves into flange-soaked electro. A swirling synth hook dances over a pulsating bass arp. Deliciously tuned vocoder lines swim through the crisp instrumentation with punctual vocal stabs. Choral pads join the medley preempting sliced vocal chops that put his elegant sound design on full display. These vocals whip across the stereo field, concluding the track's excitement.

'Sunset On The A38' closes with the fittingly named Devon Expressway. An anthemic pad-driven atmospheric piece with dimly lit twilight imagery. A tweeting synthline clambers over the augmented low-end hinting at the central theme to come. Haunting choral synths chant and swathes of pads sweep through the arrangement. A CMI cries out, and an enigmatic melody pricks the ears. Señor Chugger combines his innate gift of pushing genre boundaries, painting sonic scenes with effortless charm.

Along with these 5 shimmering tracks, label heads Sesto Senso and Wrong Era's Radondo join the release with remixes of '75 To Seafront' and 'Festival Skyline'. The illustrious collaboration of Fabrizio Mammarella and Franz Scala brings their signature metallic arps and earth-shattering drums to the remix. Respectfully lifting key elements from the original and injecting them with their infectiously energetic flair, a peak-time dancefloor gem is born. Radondo gives 'Festival Skyline' a stripped-back rework, letting the choral harmonies of the original shine forth. His signature percussive approach tows the line for an infectious bassline to dance below the arps of Señor Chugger.

To this end, everyone at Turbo is grateful beyond words that venerable veteran’s veterans Extrawelt are bringing the full bore of their two decades’ experience to bear on this slice of genre-defiling excellence. The German due open with the thorax-pummeling EBM of the title track, followed up by the angry electro of “Angry Elektro.” And if you think the EP lets up from there, keep listening to find out just how wrong what you think is, because the next track is called “Angry Halibut” and sounds exactly what you’re terrified that sounds like. Grindmaster culminates with the goalie-on-acid-fantasy acid banger “Save City” and bottomless warehouse trip-soundtrack “Flunk.” 

Those of you who choose not to support your local record store will be rewarded accordingly, as Extrawelt’s own “Drop Outs in Heaven Remix” of “Flunk” is yours as a digital exclusive. We have no real problem with vinyl lovers but they should probably come to terms with the fact that digital music - and by extension, digital exclusives - is perhaps the defining trend of 2024.
