'Consuming Shadow' concludes a year-long series of explosive EPs from Dez Williams. A broad realm has been established through the 29 tracks it contains, with this final instalment pushing the outer edges and re-establishing the depth and artistry Dez offers with each set.

'See_eye_hey' treads mostly in electro territory, with windup synths and newsreel vocal chop in effect, opening into a wide open cinematic blast section. The stylized snappy breakbeat fills and drum patterns wedge their way under an amp-boosted polyrhythmic acid sequence, setting up an all-in section that feels like a destination at the height of tension.

'Coiled spring' captures a raw, edgy beast of a jam. An absurd collection of wandering synths exploring a cyclical pattern, only to be repeatedly boxed in by heavy breathing drum fx and jacking breaks. Abstract stuff but no nonsense here.

Electro techno with a detroit bent and a bleep slant converges in 'hashing past' but nothing about this track sounds misplaced or outdated. Electro evolution still stretches toward future jazz and this number definitely wears its intellect proudly and to great effect.

A deeply modulated sync bass synth runs the show in 'take you for granted'. The slippery leads and low end are balanced by dry, punchy breaks. Layers of melodic themes weave and braid their way through a dynamic arrangement that wraps in a concise, stripped down outro.

The title track 'consuming shadow' is an ethereal drone through tense pads, infinite space and lost noise artefacts. Thick with tone but utterly desolate in mood, it evokes a sense of submission to detached and dystopian visions.

Ending with the deepest, most emotive track has become the convention in this series. So here we sign off with 'silvios joint', a pensive piece with classic elements and elegant composition. The lush backdrop of sliding strings, regal bass bumps and steady supporting rhythm track hold it down for continuous melodic variations in the top synth line. This is a gorgeous final statement that both asks and answers for itself.

Liège-based Gravitational Effect excels with a killer new electro EP to mark the Reposition Records label's third hard hitting release, while scene mainstay Radioactive Man offers up one of his signature remixes.

Gravitational Effect is a fast-rising new artist who impressed with his first outing on Planet Tapes. It showcased a love of 80s electro boogie and club-ready funk and here the artist pays tribute to electro’s intergalactic appeal whilst adding his own euphoric and mind-bending spin.

First up is the high-speed 'Forbidden Planet' with its coruscated bass, bustling drum patterns and skewed lead synths all set to blow up the dance floor. 'Unknown Frontliner' takes a deeper approach, with mystic chords hovering in the air over a crisp electro beat with rubbery bass reverberating way down low. It's a track full of intrigue, while 'Base Control' is the most hard-edged cut of the EP. The gurgling bass and smeared pads are powered along by a turbo-charged electro rhythm that never lets up.

Radioactive Man is one of the most respected electronic music producers in the UK who endlessly explores every niche the electro genre has to offer. He has a sizeable discography that takes in countless EP’s, LP’s and remixes on the most influential labels, and most recently he has unveiled his own 10” series Sonicus Croniclus on Asking For Trouble. His fantastic remix of 'Base Control' experiments with the original's central synth pattern. He pitches it down alongside more spaced-out production and the result is a mesmeric and psychedelic seven-minute masterpiece.

With this EP, Gravitational Effect proves himself adept at sequencing ever-evolving synths, playful melodies finely-programmed drum patterns.

About the artist:

“I take the name Mute and I shall not speak”: this artist (original name unknown) took a vow of silence, which forbids her to speak until the war is over, but leaves an exception that allows her to sing.
Mute started making music a long time ago, but mainly kept it to herself, using it as a form of therapy. Her songs are not exactly cheery and sometimes haunting, but the main thought of her lyrics is: no matter how hard your trials are now, you can overcome them and turn trauma into strength.
