Atmospheric Resistance

This conversation explores acoustic imagination in times of war, with a focus on the geographies addressed in Lawrence Abu Hamdan and Mhamad Safa’s works, including Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. It begins by highlighting the architecture of ambient violence and its psycho-social and cultural dimensions within the context of aggression and armed conflict. In addition to the striking effects of loudness and its use as a military tactic, sounds that are repetitive, delayed, and subdued form the core of the conversation. The artists also discuss how the human ear, even during moments of extreme duress, can hear, detect, and resist specific forms of acoustic violence. The conversation foregrounds how sonic force is capable of reshaping the definitions of acoustic conditioning, political discourse, legal accountability and sound as resistance.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan is a ‘Private Ear’. In 2023 he founded Earshot, the world's first organisation to use sound in defence of human and environmental rights. His projects that reflect on the politics of sound and listening have been presented all over the world and received multiple awards including the 2019 Turner Prize. 

Mhamad Safa is an architect, sound producer and researcher based in London. His work focuses on multi-scalar spatial conditions and their sonic make-ups. He is an Associate Lecturer in Architecture and Media Studies at the Royal College of Art in London.
